Oxford Progressive English Readers (OPER) employ the latest methods of textanalysis, using specially designed software, to ensure that readability is carefullycontrolled.

OPER stories are easy for the average student at any given level to read.Students become accustomed to a natural, flowing style of reading. The need tointerrupt their enjoyment of the story to look up difficult words or grammaticalforms is minimized by the intelligent use of contextual clues and illustrations.Footnotes and other distractions are also eliminated. Students experience readingin its purest form, but always at a level they can manage.

The OPER difference Natural reading

The number of less familiar wordsin each level is strictly controlled.

The word is recycled throughoutthe text for reinforcement.

Starter The Monkey King

Special words and expressions that are importantto the stories are included. However, their numberin any one title is restricted to not more thanabout five for every 1,000 words of text.

Beyond reading Tools for school-based assessment

School-based assessment will form 20% of the total grade in the 2007HKCEE.After 2008, the new 3 + 3 curriculum and the proposed Hong KongDiploma of Secondary Education will also follow this pattern.

Students will need to read relatively unaided and be able to comment andreflect on the experience of reading in preparation for oral assessment.Yourjunior secondary students will be the first to face this challenge.

More than any other readers series, Oxford Progressive English Readers will prepareyour students for this experience by presenting highly readable texts thatpreserve the flavour of the originals and encourage students to express theiropinions.

The CD-ROM gives students the opportunity to:• Perform the stories interactively• Practise pronunciation of difficult words and names• Give their opinions of the book in a ‘safe’ computer environment• Build their confidence for public speaking and oral assessment

The Oxford Progressive English ReadersLanguage Arts CD-ROM goes one stepfurther by presenting dramatic readingsof selected passages from each level.
