This installation highlights the predominance of boundaries within our society - political, economic and cultural. Each monumental, mirrored fencepost represents the structures we inherit or construct as a member of society. But the spaces in-between are charged as spaces of possibility, either left to be defined by the predominant system, or grasped as fluid, connective spaces which we might still be able to shape ourselves.

BE WATER was the first comprehensive solo exhibition of Awst & Walther in Berlin, in which the artists explored humankind’s ambiva-
lent relationship with the ocean. Sea Defence was the entrance piece
to the exhibition, depicting a gigantic but empty and futile defence
structure mirroring the shapes usually found on eroding coastlines.

Relic (2016) is a bronze cast of a neon light tube, colonized by common mussels. Based on a found object, washed ashore on a beach in Wales, the sculpture provides a strong image of the sphere of co-existence between human and non-human entities. It connects to a series of works by the artists that contribute to a discussion about the current ecological state of our planet.

The Strata series investigates our peculiar relationship to materials
today. They are formed from HDPE plastic, a so called re-granulate,
which is produced from used bottle caps. The material‘s resistance
to decay will make it one of the main geological signifiers of human life on earth far beyond our extinction. The recycled HDPE is melted
and re-cast, during which different shades of plastic melt together to
create waves and swirls of colour resembling geological strata and
satellite images of the Earth.

This installation reflects on the forces and intentions which shape contemporary landscapes, highlighting the tension between human industry and organic life. Visitors must orientate themselves newly in the space, since customary movement is restricted by the poles. The work begs us to re-consider our relationship to landscape, architecture and the fundamental ground beneath our feet.
