The city of Metz itself is an inside tip if you are
looking for a place to go on a weekend trip! So
close to Germany – both historically and
geographically – but still very French, the city is
a true paradise for gourmets, including those on
a tight budget. This little guide aims at helping
you organise your trip to Metz. Whether at
Christmas time or in the summer, day and night,
its buildings – built in the local yellow limestone
(Pierre de Jaumont) – enthral visitors.

A LITTLE GUIDE FOR A PERFECT WEEKEND IN METZ
DISCOVER METZ ON FOOT Guided tours, Museums & Centre Pompidou-Metz
You can easily visit the city-centre of Metz on foot, and some
streets are for pedestrians only. The city has many parks and
gardens (Esplanade, Jean-Marie-Pelt Gardens, Jardin d’Amour,
Jardin Botanique…) as well as footpaths along the Moselle and
the Seille rivers.
Sightseeing made easy! Circuits marked by small bronze
triangles fixed to the floor.
The App Metz Monument Tracker® is available on Google
Play Store (for free) and on the App Store in French, English, German,
Dutch and Spanish.
Free admission to the Centre Pompidou- Metz for people
under 26 coming from the European Union. You can find all the
information about the exhibitions on the website:

And for those aged above 26, the City Pass Metz is the best
way to discover the city: For €12,50, it includes a set of three basic
offers: 1 entry to the Centre Pompidou-Metz (it can cost up to €12)
1 entry to the Musée de la Cour d’Or and 1 audio guided tour
(handset available at the Tourist Office, in F, D, GB, IT et NL) +
additional discounts and services
Every day, the Tourist Office takes you on a guided visit or
themed visits according to the program (in French, for individuals),
only €4 for student and €8 full price. During summer, there are also
guided bike tours and Franco-German tours on fixed dates.
HOW TO GET THERE Metz lies less than an hour’s drive from
Germany and Luxembourg, and is easily
accessible, whether by car (A4/A31), by train
(82 min from Paris, 55 min from Luxembourg),
by bus (Flixbus, Eurolines… ) or by plane.

EATING ON A BUDGET Restaurants offer set menus at a reasonable price,
especially at lunch time.
On the Place Saint-Jacques and Place Saint-Louis. You
will also find many restaurants on the Place de Chambre and
the surrounding streets.
Metz is a gourmet city. It is home to many bakeries and
pastry shops with tempting window displays… Impossible to
ignore! Give yourself a break with a coffee and a delicious
Mirabelle tart, some macaroons, a “Paris-Metz” ... Or any of
the other specialties from Lorraine. Quiche Lorraine or Pâté
Lorrain = 1 meal!
Come and try some of our regional specialities at the
Covered Market (for example Soupe à Soup’s, Chez
Mauricette).
SHOPPING In the rue Serpenoise and rue des
Clercs, in the shopping mall St. Jacques or from
2017 in the new shopping centre MUSE.
Other shopping ideas: boutiques,
second-hand and vintage stores: rue Taison,
rue des Allemands, rue des Jardins.
Books: rue du Palais (second-hand
books) or rue Mazelle: bookshop specialised in
foreign-language books. Every Saturday: book
market in front of the City Hall.

BAR-HOPPING AND PARTIES IN METZ
To spend a great evening, Metz has many
interesting places very popular amongst the local
students. The city has around 20 000 students, for
approximately 120 000 inhabitants.
The main squares of the city where you will find
many bars: the medieval Place Saint-Louis, Place Saint-
Jacques, Place de Chambre. As soon as the sun shines,
people meet and have a drink at the bars and restaurants
terraces and it gives the city a Mediterranean
atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for an Irish pub or a
student bar, you will find everything you want…
Happy Hour in the city’s bars varies between 6pm
and 11pm. Among the best known bars are: Vivian’s Fairy,
Les Paraiges, Les Frères Berthoms, La Comédie.

CONCERTS, EVENTS & FLEA MARKETS
Music and concert enthusiasts take note! The city of Metz has many
performance halls and every year organises several big events and
festivals that will make your trip to Metz unforgettable!
BAM et Trinitaires. 10 halls for concerts, festivals and other events
located in unusual places – the building of the Trinitaires partly dates
back to the Roman period and is classified as Historical Monument,
while La BAM (Boîte à musique) is located in a very modern building.
National and international artists of diverse musical styles. Cheap and
