Task 1: Genres of Art Mood board. Art can be grouped according to GENRE. The most common are: Still life, landscape, gure.Art maybe gurative (we recognise what we see in this art form, it is therefore representational, grounded in the reality of the external world) or abstract (it is not representational of one external reality; form, line, colour and shapes are a visual language).FOR AS MANY IMAGES AS POSSIBLE CHOOSE THE WORK OF ESTABLISHED ARTISTS. THIS MEANS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR LIFE AND WORK. Create a mood board for each genre of Art either as a collage or digitally and start your own Art Head start Critcal Studies PowerPoint or Keynote.
![Page 4: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Task 2: Make your own ‘Zine’ to ll with a collection of drawings & Artwork from your favourite genre of art.
What is a Zine? A Magazine; it is a fanzine. Get making a Zine!
1.) Do this by folding a piece of A1 paper into 10 / If you don’t have this, be resourceful: gather scraps of paper e.g. backs of envelopes/ scrap card / wrapping paper / lined paper - Dierent papers (patterned/with text /plane, heavy/light/rough/smooth..Brown parcel paper, baking parchment, stained paper e.g. coee/tea/food colouring/natural dyes/smear with earth…step on with your shoes on…- Coloured waste paper: e.g. wrapping paper, – especially semi-transparent, photocopies of relevant imagery.- Fabric/packaging/’found surfaces’, Computer manipulated imagery- Text – newspaper, poems, prose, saying etc. unwanted printed photographs/old postcards/pages from books
It really doesn’t matter! You will need 10 pieces altogether.Cut your papers/card to be the same size. Fold / Tape / staple / stitch your paper together to make your own personal Zine! Zines can be any shape / size you like, small – large. Work to the size you feel comfortable working to.
Now it is time to ll your ‘Zine’ with your drawing. In order to make great Art, like the masterpieces by the Artists we have found, we will work like Artists. All Artists begin by drawing...
1.) Look back at your 3 mood boards of Art Genre2.) Choose an Artwork by an Artist from your favourate mood board3.) Leave the cover page, (you will design this in the next task). So, Begin on the rst page of your ‘Zine’, make a quick sketch of the Artwork. You have just 5 minutes to do this. You will not capture all details. You are just getting to know your Artwork a little bit more. Note the Artists’ name and title of the work.
![Page 5: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Task 3: Create your own image inspired by each of the genre you have researched. A portrait or human gure, a landscape and a still life.Put a each image on one page of your zineThese can be in any media of your choice. We would recommend using a dierent media for each. Here are some examples, each in a dierent technique or media. If you want to work on a larger scale then re-draw your favourite area of each image into the zine.

Then: Find any of the following resources:Stop clock / your phonA cup of tea, to enjoy! Or to stain your paper if you like…Biro / ne liner pen / felt tip pen / fountain pen…Pencil HB – B = a soft pencil for lots of tone!...Charcoal / graphite stickCrayons / chalk / charcoal (from the bbq)….Coloured crayons / pastels / wax sticks ….Old wrapping paper/magazines/newspaperScissors and Pritt stick
Choose your favourite Genre/style of artwork from your artworks so far.Set up a stil life, choose a view ( landscape) or use a photo for a gure/portrait.
You will make 5 drawings in your ‘Zine’ from your subject. They will begin minimal and become more detailed as you progress. You are now ready to begin!Go for it! Tip: Choose a medium which ows, like a biro...
Drawing 1You have 2 minutes
Drawing 2move your viewpoint & draw again: You now have 4 minutes.
Drawing 3Change medium again draw with even more lines , try to add some texture in your marks:
You have 16 minutesDrawing 4
Change medium. You now have more time. Notice the light, begin to build up some tone in your drawing: You have 32 minutes
Drawing 5Cut out some old papers, make a collage inspired by the most bold, clear shapes of your
subject. Draw on top of your collage: You have 1 hour.
Photograph your drawings and upload these into your Power point /key note presentation. Tip: Put your favourate drawing at the end of your digital presentation. It is always best to
end with a bang!
Task 4: Now it is time to ll your ‘Zine’ with your drawing.
![Page 7: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Task 5: An eyecatching cover for your Zine
1.) Design a front cover for your Zine. Your chosen subject for your timed drawings is your title for your Zine. 2.) You can add images, sketches, text, anything you associate with your theme!3.) Create a bold image using as few colours as possible.
![Page 8: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Task 6: Make an Artwork which re-invents one one of your drawings in 3 Dimensional relief. For this task you need:A piece of card as a surface to work on, A4 would be idealCard of varied thicknesses. Some corregated card is really useful. Just look through the re-cycling.Glue or double sided tape. Here are some examples to give you ideas. You can work in a realistic way or develop abstract forms from your drawings.
A complex example bt Eduardo PaolozziSimply the top layerof the card has been removed
![Page 9: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Task 7: Abstract out and ll the rest of your Zine pages with hand printing.
Print is all around you and you can create amazing results by making plates with humble materials such as….
Make a Relief printing plate from one of the following:2.) An eraser. Cut into it with a scalpel/sharp knife. Apply water based printing ink/acrylic paint/gouache paint/drawing ink with a soft brush. Print..3) Polystyrene. Engrave a design into this with a biro/hard pencil. Apply water based printing ink/acrylic paint/gouache paint/drawing ink with a soft brush. Print..5.) The edge of an old credit card/a piece of card. Print with water based printing ink/acrylic/domestic paint…6.) Clay/plastercine/pastry/dough…cut and engrave a design while it is soft and print….7.) Finger print… 8.) Print directly from ‘found objects’ which have a surface…e.g. kitchen utensils, e.g. a cheese grater, shoes, vinyl, fabrics, packaging, wood, plants.. 9.) Once you have made your relief print block, paint onto it and place your paper on top. Rub the surface with the side of your hand. 10.) Stick into your Zine / work directly into it.
Stencil printing:11.) Cut stencils out of paper. Sponge a thin layer of paint through the stencil..12.) Gently attach masking tape/magic tape to your surface. Sponge a thin layer of paint around the tape…remove. Rearrange, do it again in a dierent colour/tone. 13.) Layer your stencilled shapes with colours light – dark to create more complex designs 14.) You can develop the above method with ‘masking uid’/latex.
Tip: You may wish to water your acrylic paint down before applying. Aim for even, thin layers of colour. Explore the opacity and transparency of your paints and inks.
You can add text / draw / paint into prints if you would like to add more detail or create texture and further denition.
![Page 10: A-Level Fine Art€¦ · A-Level Fine Art By the end of this project you will have created: • YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL ‘ZINE’ • YOUR SUMMER WORK All of these tasks will prepare](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022050311/5f73c88d71c5b342a33b3236/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Critical writing task: How to write interestingly about Art. Select your favourate piece of Art from your genre research. Describe the Artwork in these 2 sections:
Section 1: Objective (descriptive facts)
1: First of all, what genre is the Artwork? What do you see in the Artwork?2: Context. When and by whom was the Artwork made? Title of Artwork. What possibly inuenced this Artist to make this work? E.g. what was happening at the time the Art was made?3: What actually is it? Is it a drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, mixed media…?4: How has the Artist used their media to make the Artwork? Describe:Lines. Are there visible lines in your Artwork? Are they owing/subtle/dened/thin/continuous/fragmented? What eect do the lines give?Tone. Is there light and dark? Is it strong/subtle? What eect does the tone give? Light. What is the possible light source? Is it natural, if so what time of day might it be? Is the light synthetic? Cool/warm? How does light create a mood in the Artwork?Shapes. How would you describe the shapes which create the form in the Artwork? Are the shapes organic / geometric/representational/abstracted out?Colours. Is it made up of one colour? Or more? What is the overtone of the Artwork? This is the colour which dominates the work. Do the colours appear to be natural/synthetic? What eect do the colours have on each other and on the Artwork? How is colour eected by light? (which, in turn, creates mood.Textures. If you could touch your Artwork, what might it feel like? Will it be smooth/rough? How has the Artist possibly created this texture? How would you describe the marks you see? E.g. the brush marks if it is a painting.
Section 2. Subjective. Personal feelings and ideas. What are my reactions to the Artwork?
1:Composition. Where is your eye led in the composition? Leading lines – Where is your eye led through the Artwork? Where does the Artist put you, the viewer? Are you inside / outside the Artwork? 2: What does the Artwork make you think of? Does it remind you of anything? Do you have associations with it? Can you empathise with it? How might someone else see the Artwork dierently? What does the Artwork possibly reveal about your interests, beliefs and values? 3: Message/meaning. Are there any symbolic elements? Is there a narrative; is the Artwork possibly telling a story? Is there a possible message in it?
Combine both of these into a short piece of prose FOR ONE ARTWORK YOU HAVE RESPONDED TO. Add this to your Headstart presentation. and send this to [email protected] or [email protected]
.E.g.: ‘When I look at this mixed media piece by Jean Michel Basquiat (1960 -1988). I am drawn to the mysterious faces, the shapes, layered colours, “scribbled” white symbols. I think they combine to make a gure appear from a darkness, due to its position on the canvas. It appears to be discrete, the form is only implied. The gure is hidden by the hand- yet I can see a gure that bears weight and seems in isolation. I feel for the gure, being pushed and pulled in dierent directions. I am interested in the dark, almost sinister mood of this painting. The mix of contempory and more primitive art forms gives this Artwork an intense energy. It is dicult to take in all the aspects and continually holds the viewers interst as if there were a story here to decipher.

A LEVEL FINE ART – SUMMER HOMEWORK 2020 – ‘WAYS OF SEEING’
You will begin your course by exploring the act of recording through drawing. If possible work on good quality cartridge paper.
Objects, Light and Placement1. Choose a natural form or a mechanical object to study in detail. This object should have both a visible inside and outside. Look/feel it closely. Alter it if you need to, e.g. break it open. Your natural form could be a vegetable/fruit/seed head/rock/shell/wood…Your mechanical object could be a tool/gadget/mode of transport/toy/machine…DO NOT CHOOSE YOUR MOBILE PHONE. The more complex the better! Place your object in a strong, direct light source and place it somewhere new (i.e. where you might not expect to nd it)! You could suspend, stand, prop or balance it. Think carefully about this section. Your choice of object & location are just as important as the drawings & photographs you will make. Then work through the following tasks in this order:Draw2. Pay attention to light and shadows. Create 4 drawings on your sheet of paper. Each drawing should be no smaller than A5. Each time you make a new drawing, change your viewpoint, so that each study you make tells us something new about your object. Include part of your location in your drawing.
• A line drawing – see how many dierent lines you can use to capture the form of your object. Use a ne liner/fountain pen/biro for this drawing – spend a minimum of 15 minutes on this drawing.• A tonal drawing with a soft (2B, 4B) pencil/graphite/charcoal – spend a minimum of 1 hour on this drawing.• A coloured drawing – see how many dierent coloured tones you nd in and on your object. Use pencil crayons/paint/pastels for this study – spend about 1.5 hours on this drawing.• A textured mixed media drawing. Try working with dierent paper, e.g. tissue paper/newspaper/’discarded paper’. Rip/cut your papers and glue these down to create a collage inspired by your object. Then draw on top and around your papers with a combination of dierent medium. E.g. Pencil and pen/pastels and paint – spend a minimum of 2 hours on this drawing.

3. Take photographs of your object in interesting light, in your chosen location. Experiment with perspective. E.g. close-up shots. Print your 4 best photographs, no smaller than A5. Present these on A3 paper. You may nd that these look most eective in black and white/sepia. Please note:If you don’t have the suggested art materials, then just use whatever you have E.g. Dierent pens and pencils. You can be creative and interpretative with this project. You can do more drawings than we have suggested but you must stick to the timings above for the 4 core drawings. This is your chance to show us what you can do. When you start in lessons with us, we will show you how to make improvements to your artistic practise – we certainly don’t expect you to be an expert already! You will always be given merit for putting your best into your work.
We really look forward to seeing you and your work, which will form the basis of our rst project.
Checklist:• Choose an interesting object• Place the object in an interesting setting, where you would not expect to nd it• 4 Drawings of the object in your chosen setting (see above)• 4 photographs of the object in your chosen setting• Bring your object, your drawings & photographs to your rst lesson of Art.

Year 1 Art Summer Homework Extension TasksIf you are applying for 2 of the following subjects you must do the main summer homework
AND the extension summer homework for BOTH subjects: Art, Graphic Communication, Photography. The quality of your work will help sta decide if you have the capacity to
succeed on such a demanding study programme.
1. Work in an A3 sketchbook.2. Carefully consider your theme: ‘Ways of Seeing’. Spider diagram – write words you associate with this theme3. Mood board – pictures (with words). Use books and magazines for inspiration, not just the internet. 4. Study an object which interests you. Look at it, hold it and feel it. Answer the following questions: How do I see my object? What are the physical properties of your object? E.g. Is it heavy/light? Hard/soft? Rough/smooth? Geometric/organic? Solid/delicate? Shiny/textured? 5. Create 4 drawings of this object. Look at your four drawings carefully. Which drawing best captures the physical properties of your object? This will be your most successful drawing. (Look carefully, it may be the one you least expect it to be). Write one evaluative sentence under each drawing to explain your selection.
6.Look at the work of these artists.
Choose the one Artist who best reects your approach to your most successful drawing. Print/photocopy two good size examples of your artist’s drawings. Make an Artist Study of each drawing and present alongside your print/photocopy (this maybe the whole drawing/a section of it). Label with the name of the artist, title (if it has one), medium (this is the drawing material) and surface (the type of paper the drawing is on).7. Cut a square out of a piece of paper and hold this up to your object. This is your ‘view nder’. Look through your ‘view nder’ from dierent perspectives to create four new compositions. Do a further four drawings of your object looking through your view nder, using the same material and approach in your most successful drawing, but this time try to apply the drawing technique you have learnt in your Artist study to your own work. Each time you make a new drawing zoom further into your object, so that by the fourth drawing, you have removed the ‘edge’ of the object and you now have a study of just one section of it.8. Use all you have learnt from your Artist studies, your 4 new drawings and your drawing from your photograph to create a nal developed artwork which best reects your object’s physical qualities and your interpretation of the theme: ‘Ways of Seeing’
