A few days ago ….Etwin and Ning continued their odyssey inspace. They traveled from planet to planetenjoying the view of the Earth. They tried tofind Greece so that they could land theirspaceship there. Everything was ready foranother journey through time!

Etwin and Ning landed on the sea. They lovedswimming in the crystal clear waters. As theywere swimming they saw a dark cave on asmall island. Was it Calypso’s cave?They decided to have a look ….

The Parthenon, the temple on the top of theAcropolis hill stands in the middle of Athens.It took only 10 years to complete (447-438BC) and the Athenians were very proud ofthis temple for the Goddess of wisdomAthena, the protector of the city.

Etwin and Ning climbed down the Acropolishill and saw the columns of Olympian Zeus,the remains of the biggest Greek ancienttemple which the Roman Emperor Andriancompleted in 2nd centuryBC

They also met the first Marathon runnerPheidippides, the messenger soldier from thebattle of Marathon to Athens in 480 BC andran after him the 42,195 metres of the way!What courage to run all this way to carry thevictory news!

Etwin and Ning continued their tour roundAthens in Cape Sounio. They saw King Aegeasof Athens waiting for the return of his sonTheseas from the island of Crete. Aegeas waslooking at the sea trying to see the white sailsof Theseas’ ship, a sign he was alive and safeafter his visit to the labyrinth. UnfortunatelyTheseas forgot to put a white sail on his shipand his father thought he was dead.

Etwin and Ning wanted to visit the labyrinthin Knossos Palace of King Minoas so they goton the Greek ships and set off for Crete. TheGreek vessels traveled across the Aegean tocarry goods such as wine, wheat and fruit.

The labyrinth was the home of Minotaurus , acreature half –man half-bull. It lived in thelabyrinth which Deadalus built, and asked forseven young boys and girls to be sent to himfrom Athens every year as a trophy. No oneknew the way out. No one could escape fromMinotaurus!

But Etwin and Ning knew Theseas’ s trick.They entered the labyrinth and found theirway out using Ariadne’s thread.

They also visited Deadalus and his son Icarus intheir prison cell. Deadalus was the designer ofthe labyrinth but the King put him in prison sothat he can’t build anything like this again. Fa-ther and son built wax wings and flew out oftheir cell. Icarus flew high near the Sun and hiswings melted. He was the first man to fly inhuman history.

Back to the mainland. The travelers wanted tosee Pythia in the oracle of Delphi and get aprophecy for their future journeys in Europe.Pythia, the priestess of Apollo, chew bayleaves and could foresee the future. Theirjourney through time was going to beexciting!

Epidavros, the ancient theatre near Argos waswaiting for them. They watched a tragedy bySophocles, one of the three best dramatists ofclassic times. The performance was amazing!

Etwin and Ning wanted to see the naturalbeauty of the country as well. They traveledthrough green plains and rocky mountains,steep hills and valleys. Greece was sunny andwelcoming!

Another beautiful mountain they visited wasPelio, the mountain of Centaurs and thesummer resort of the Olympian Gods. Thickforests with oak, maple and chestnut treesmake Pelio a wonderful place. Etwin and Ning had a cruise around MountAthos, too. The holy mountain, a sacred placefull of monasteries of every Orthodox Churchin the world. The first monks came here in 3-4 c. AD.Only monks live here and measure time us-ing the old Byzantine calendar. Church bellsand the wind make you feel you are inheaven!

Ning wanted to visit the Greek islands as well.She had heard a lot about the beaches and thewhite and blue houses. Greece has thousandsof islands spread in the Aegean and the IonianSea. Windmills everywhere, narrow paths,little white chapels and little ports make theGreek islands the perfect holiday destination.Ning said: “I will visit Santorini next year!”
