WSU will look to get rid of the ball immediately on pass plays, and it should be aided by a rushing attack that averages 182.3 yards a game. WSU’s defense must take advantage of the Lobos’ two relatively inexperienced linemen in sophomore Terrance Pennington and redshirt freshman Robert Turner. Without OT Jason Lenzmeier, UNM must play error-free ball. The Lobos’ special teams must be as sharp as they’ve ever been. The Cougars have blocked three kicks this season, and returner Sammy Moore took a kick back 97 yards — after bobbling the ball — for a touchdown against Colorado last week. NEW MEXICO INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS KEY STRATEGIES WSU has had a Pac-10 offensive, defensive or a special- teams player of the week in each of the first three weeks this season. The Cougars have won 20 straight games when they scored in the third quarter, last losing in 2000 to Washington. FAST FACT DID IT Dating to last season, UNM has converted 33 of 35 chances in the red zone (inside the opponent’s 20-yard line). The Lobos have 31 TDs and two field goals in that span. FAST FACT DID IT The Lobos have lost seven straight games to ranked opponents. The last win over a top-25 foe was their 23-21 win over No. 9 Utah in 1994. POSITION BATTLES: Who will be today’s Special K? Bill Doba, first year (2-1) WSU HEAD COACH Rocky Long, sixth year (26-37) UNM HEAD COACH JIM THOMPSON/JOURNAL JACK DEMPSEY/AP BY GREG ARCHULETA Journal Staff Writer P ULLMAN, Wash. — The Uni- versity of New Mexico foot- ball team is, if anything, unwavering in its spirit and self-confidence. In the midst of a two-game losing streak — including a tough 10-7 loss at home to Brigham Young last week to start the Mountain West Conference schedule — the Lobos (1- 2) believe they have a legitimate shot at beating 24th-ranked Washington State (2-1) today in the Cougars’ 2003 home opener. “We don’t care if they’re a top-25, top-30 team,” UNM senior linebacker Daniel Gawronski says of the defending Pacific-10 Conference co- champion Cougars. “We’re going in there to win.” Defensively, the Lobos have reason for optimism, having held BYU 122.5 yards below its passing average entering the game after struggling against air-it-out Texas Tech. Gawronski and junior linebacker Nick Speegle led the charge, with 10 and nine tackles, respectively, against BYU. “We’ve got a couple of games under our belts,” says Gawronski, whose performance last week was a career- high in tackles. “Everybody’s starting to feel more comfortable about playing. I think we’re getting more mentally prepared. The key is just not giving up big plays. That’s what’s killing us.” Did someone mention big plays? That perfectly describes Washington State’s 47-26 win last week at then- No. 17 Colorado. Cougars senior wide receiver/returner Sammy Moore (5 feet, 11 inches, 194 pounds) returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Senior cornerback Jason David (5-8, 180) brought back an interception 41 yards for a TD. Senior quarterback Matt Kegel (6-5, 227) threw TD passes of 77 and 74 yards. “They’re pretty good,” says UNM coach Rocky Long, touched by his own flair for the obvious. “They’ve got a lot of skill. They’ve got skill at the receivers, and one receiver is also a great return guy. They’ve got skill in the secondary and skill at running back.” Long calls WSU wide receivers Moore and senior Devard Darling (6- 3, 213), a Florida State transfer, the best the Lobos have faced. The Cougars’ leading rusher, senior Jonathan Smith (5-10, 190), actually is the backup to senior Jermaine Green (6 feet, 228). Their balance on offense is what makes them tough to defend, Long says. “After doing our statistical analysis,” Long says, “they’ve run the ball 114 times and passed it 114 times. That’s about as 50-50 as I’ve ever seen. I think they do a great job of getting the people the ball that can do something with it.” The offense starts with Kegel, who has improved weekly while trying to fill the enormous hole left by the graduated Jason Gesser, a 2002 Heisman Trophy candidate. “It’s a very versatile offense,” says Kegel, who earned Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 310-yard, three-touchdown passing effort against the Buffaloes. “All I have to do is throw the ball. I just have a lot of playmakers on my team who can make the catch, break tackles and make great runs. It makes my job easy.” Kegel adds, however, that facing UNM’s defense won’t make his job any easier. “I think they’re a great defense,” he says. “It’s going to cause problems, but hopefully I can hang in there. I always expect the blitz. It ain’t gonna be anything we haven’t seen before, but they do some crazy stuff. This will be our toughest game yet.” Strong words from a quarterback who has played against Colorado and Notre Dame, which beat the Cougars 29-26 in overtime after WSU blew a 19-0 lead. “It’s a tough defense to go against, to prepare for in one week’s time,” first-year Cougs coach Bill Doba says of the Lobos. Doba was a 15-year WSU assistant who was the team’s defensive coordinator last season under then- head coach Mike Price. Doba says he contemplated visiting UNM a couple of years ago to study Long’s defensive scheme. “It just really makes you tentative (on offense),” Doba says. “You have difficulty firing off the ball. You just don’t know where they’re going to go.” Doba says he’s impressed with Lobos starting quarterback Casey Kelly, despite his struggles last week against BYU. Doba voices his concerns about UNM’s speed option, a package the Cougars haven’t faced. The Lobos have their own concerns about their offense, having not scored a point in the first half of their last two games. “It’s been very surprising and frustrating as well because of the kind of players we are and the kinds of things we’ve shown we can do,” senior wide receiver Adrian Boyd says. “This week (in practice), we’ve made a point of putting points on the board early and not stopping ourselves and not doing the dumb mistakes. We’ve got to play a complete game.” UNM’s offense did score 72 points in one game this season, impressive even against an NCAA Division I-AA school like Texas State. Confidence is present on that side of the ball for the Lobos as well. “As long as we keep fighting and avoid the mental mistakes,” Boyd says, “I think it’s going to be a pretty good game.” PAT VASQUEZ-CUNNINGHAM/JOURNAL UNM linebacker Daniel Gawronski (center) says the Lobos are in Pullman, Wash., with every intention of upsetting WSU, the defending Pac-10 co-champion. LOBOS’DEPTH CHART

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICOADVANTAGE

QUARTERBACK: SR Matt Kegel (6-5, 227) hasimproved from game to game after passing for 108yards in the opener against Idaho.

RECEIVERS: SR Sammy Moore and JR DevardDarling are, perhaps, the best tandem ever to facecoach Rocky Long’s Lobos.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Massive tackles JeremeyWilliams (6-4, 288) and Tai Tupai (6-5, 320) takeup blockers to free their LBs.

LINEBACKER: SO Will Derting (6 feet, 237) plays alongside two seniors but is the best of thebunch.

SECONDARY: SR Jason David (5-8, 180) has 11career interceptions — two for TDs, including onelast week against Colorado.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Returner Sammy Moore is aplaymaker. Kicker and punter are strong. Unit hasthree blocked kicks.

COACHES: Bill Doba, the team’s defensive coor-dinator last season, has made a smooth transitionto head coach.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Average size of guards and tack-les: 6-7, 317. The unit has allowed only three sacksagainst the likes of Notre Dame and Colorado.

RUNNING BACK: SR Jonathan Smith is averaging92 yards a game and 6.7 yards a carry — and he’slisted as the backup to Jermaine Green.

QUARTERBACK: Coaching staff thinks bad outing by SR Casey Kelly last week was an aberration.

RECEIVERS: Wideouts need to learn where thefirst-down markers are. SR Adrian Boyd can makebig things happen on screens.

DEFENSIVE LINE: SR DE Daniel Kegler needs tobecome the force he was last season when he hadseven sacks.

LINEBACKER: SR Daniel Gawronski and JR NickSpeegle came up big to make up for UNM losingFola Fashola for the year.

SECONDARY: SR Brandon Ratcliff must createturnovers at lobo back position; UNM didn’t forceany last week vs. Brigham Young.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Lobos kickoff returners muff-ing too many balls; pressure on opposing puntersnowhere to be found.

COACHES: Rocky Long does his best job whenhis team is facing considerable adversity.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Lobos are hoping SO TerrancePennington grows up as fast as FR Robert Turnerhas.

RUNNING BACK: SO DonTrell Moore and JR D.D.Cox need to be healthy to provide big-play capacityfrom the rushing attack.
