What you need to ‘Be Prepared’ for the launch of Scouts BSA on Feb. 1, 2019On February 1, 2019, the Boy Scouts of America will officially launch Scouts BSA. It’s the same great program we currently call Boy Scouts, but it will be open to any young person—boy or girl—ages 11 to 17.
Volunteers, parents and Scouts have been preparing for Scouts BSA for months with families forming a plan to start all girl troops as soon as possible.
It’s important to note that there will be separate Scouts BSA troops for girls and boys. Some units may choose to form a linked troop—separate boy and girl troops that share a chartered organization and troop committee.
So how do you get started? Here’s a checklist for success when starting your new troop.
How to Start Your New TroopA Check-List for Success
Identify your “Organizer” — This person will gather all paperwork and coordinate the
new unit organizing process.
Contact your District Professional — Connect with your District Professional and let them
know you are starting a new unit.
Identify the Chartering Organization — Obtain their approval to charter a new unit and obtain
a completed and signed new unit application and charter fee.
Select a Scoutmaster — Choose who will lead your unit and obtain a completed
application and appropriate fee.
Select a Committee — Obtain completed applications and appropriate
registration fees from each person.
Get Trained — All leaders in your unit will need to be trained for their
position and must complete Youth Protection Training.
Draft a 12-month Program Plan — Include meeting
dates, times, location and summer camp, recruiting plans, popcorn sales, service opportunities, district and council activities, and unit campouts each month. Utilize HOAC’s Ideal Year of Scouting to help you begin this process. View resources at hoac-bsa.org/ideal-year-of-scouting.
Recruit Youth Members — Interested youth members are engaged during a
recruiting process that culminates with an orientation night or event. Be sure to make it fun! Applications and appropriate fees are collected from youth members and parents that night.
Organizer Meets with District Professional — Review and submit all paperwork.
Timeline — On February 1, 2019, or after, begin your unit plan and
continue to recruit new members into your unit.
Where can I find a Troop in my area?Visit BeAScout.Org and search by zip code for a unit in your area or contact the Heart of America Council directly at 816.942.9333.
