ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

All routine maintenance should be handled by skilled, ex-perienced personnel. Your dealer can help you establish astandard procedme.

For your safety, keep the unit area clear and free of com-bustible materials, gasoline, and other flamlnable liquids andvapors.

To assure proper functioning of the unit, flow of combus-tion and ventilating air must not be obstructed fiom reachingthe unit. Clearance of at least 30 in. is required on all sidesexcept the duct side.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE FOR THEEQUIPMENT OWNER

Before proceeding with those things you might want tomaintain yoursell; please carefully consider the t\_llowing:

1. TURN OFF GAS SUPPLY AND ELECTRICALPOWER TO YOUR UNIT BEFORE SERVICINGOR PERFORMING MAINTENANCE.

2. Do not turn off electrical power to this unit withoutfirst turning off the gas supply.

3. When removing access panels or performing main-tenance functions inside your unit, be aware of sharpsheet metal parts and screws. Although special careis taken to reduce sharp edges to a minilnum, be ex-tremely careful when handling parts or reaching intothe unit.

Air Filters -- Air filter(s) should be checked at least ev-ery 3 or 4 weeks and changed or cleaned whenever it be-comes dirty. Dirty filters produce excessive stress on the blowermotor and can cause the motor to overheat and shut do,am.Table 1 indicates the correct filter size for your unit. Referto Fig. 5 to access the filter(s).

To replace or inspect filter(s) (or accessory filter rack whensupplied):

1. Remove the filter access panel using a 5/16-in.nut driver.

2. Relnove the filter(s) by pulling the filter(s) out of the unit.If the fitter(s) is dirty, clean or replace with new one.

When installing the new filter(s), note the direction of theail_ow arrows on the filter fiame.

If you have dit_cutty in locating your air filter(s), or ifyou have questions concerning proper filter maintenance, con-tact your dealer for instructions. When replacing filters, al-ways use the same size and type of filter that was suppliedoriginally by the installer.

Never operate your unit without filters in place. Failureto heed this warning may result in damage to the blowermotor and/or compressor. An accumulation of dust andlint on internal parts of your unit can cause loss of ef-ficiency and, in some cases, fire.

Heat Exchanger-- To ensure dependable and efficientheating operation, the heat exchanger should be checked bya qualified maintenance person before each heating season, and cleaned when necessary. This checkout should not beattempted by anyone not having the required expertise andequipment to properly do the job. Checking and/or cleaningthe heat exchanger involves removing the gas controls as-sembly and the flue collector box cover and, when com-pleted, reinstalling the gas controls assembly for proper op-eration. Also, the flue collector box cover must be replacedcorrectly so that a proper seal is maintained. Contact yourdealer t\_r the required periodic maintenance.

Fans and Fan Motor -- Periodically check the con-dition of tan wheels and housings and fan-motor shaftbearings. No lubrication of condenser- or evaporator-fanbearings or motors is required or recommended.

Evaporator and Condenser Coils -- Cleaning ofthe coils should only be done by qualified sel_ice per-sonnel. Contact your dealer for the required annualmaintenance.

Condensate Drain -- The drain pan and condensatedrain line should be checked and cleaned at the same timethe cooling coils are checked by your dealer.

Compressor-- All compressors are tZactory-shippedwitha normal charge of the correct type refrigeration grade oil inthem and should rarely require additional oil. The serviceperson must be certain the proper oil level is maintained inthe compressor when it is installed and running.

BEFORE YOU CALL FOR SERVICE,CHECK FOR SEVERAL EASILY-SOLVED

PROBLEMS

If insuilicient heating or cooling is suspected:

( ) Check for sul_cient airflow. Check the air filter for dirt.Check for blocked return-air or supply-air gitles. Be surethey are open and unobstructed. If these checks do not re-veal the cause, call your servicing dealer.

If your unit is not operating at all, check the t\_ltowing listt\_r easy solutions:

( ) Check to be sure that your thermostat temperature se-lector is set above the indoor temperature during the heatingseason, or below the indoor temperature during the coolingseason. Be sure the system switch is in the proper HEAT orCOOL position and not in the OFF position.

( ) Is the electrical supply switch ON'? Are any fuses blo,am,or has the circuit breaker tripped?

( ) During the heating season, check the external manualshutoff valve. Is this lever parallel with the pipe, indicatingthat the valve is open? Or is the lever at a right angle, indicating that the valve is closed? If closed, has the gas beenshut off for safety reasons? Otherwise, you may open thevalve and follow the start-up procedures listed in this manual.

NOTE: Before proceeding with the next check, turn OFFthe gas supply, then the electrical power supply to the unit.Remove the control access door.

( ) During the heating season, check the control dial on theinternal gas valve. Is it in the ON position? If it is not, besure it was not turned off for the purpose of safety. If nosafety hazards exist, follow the start-up procedures in thismanual.

( ) If your unit still tails to operate, call your servicing dealert\_r troubleshooting and repairs. Specii_ the model and serialnmnbers of your unit. (Record them in this manual in thespace provided.) If the dealer kalows exactly which unit youhave, he may be able to offer suggestions over the phone, orsave valuable time through kalowledgeabte preparation forthe service call.
