What is an ENC?ENC is an acronym for Electronic Navigational Chart and comes in VECTOR format. Vector charts consist of a series of points and lines to make up features and look computer generated. Details on the chart can be turned on and off. Objects on the chart can be clicked on to learn more information. Depths can be monitored to warn before grounding. When zooming in and out of a vector chart, only the geographical features grow larger or smaller where text keeps its size and orientation.

RNC is an acronym for Raster Navigational Chart. RASTER format is basically a direct copy or scan of an existing paper chart. Raster charts look identical to paper charts. All information contained within the chart is printed directly on it. What you see is what you get. When zooming in and out of a raster chart everything on the chart grows larger or smaller. When rotating a raster chart everything on the chart rotates.

ENC and RNC fall under the category of official charts. Only charts which have been approved and authorised by a Hydrographic Office are deemed as official. Any other type of chart is simply a “private” chart.

Private or “non-official” charts are NOT permitted as primary tools for navigation and are NOT produced and issued by a recognised Hydrographic office.

Because ENC data doesn’t yet cover the entire globe, some flag states allow ships to navigate using their ECDIS in the Raster Chart Display System (RCDS) mode in areas where no ENCs are available, but they must also carry up to date paper charts. Using RCDS mode in ENC available geographic areas is not allowed.

This guide is designed to help you understand ENCs; their use with ECDIS and the various chart license options available so you can choose the right solution for your ships. The digital revolution is here and iCHART will meet all your ECDIS chart requirements.

SENC Format, Coverage and Who to Choose? When choosing your ENC provider you need to take into account a number of factors:

Global coverage How you can easily select & order ENC’s How your ENCs will be delivered How quickly your ENCs will be delivered The speed and ease of update and installation of ENCs Licensing options available to you Additional features to support navigation – information overlays such as weather, radar, tides, piracy risks

iECDIS™ comes pre-filled with charts so you can start navigating immediately!

There are about 12,000 ENCs in existence and ENCs are ENCs no matter who distributes them – they’re all of the same quality and standard as the format is tightly regulated by the International Hydrographic Office’s (IHO) S-57 standard. Each Hydrographic Office is responsible for producing their territorial waters so every distributor has access to the same charts. Don’t let anybody tell you that the iECDIS™ Jeppesen ENC service is any less official than other ENC providers because it isn’t! ENCs are created and distributed in S-57 format then the ECDIS converts into non-uniform System Electronic Navigational Chart (SENC) format. However, iCHART goes one further with this and distributes Jeppesen’s ENC service in unique type approved SENC format CM 93/3 meaning that charts are pre-converted shore-side and loaded straight into the ECDIS reducing installation time and file size and increasing reliability. ENC verification is done on industry standard software in a controlled environment before delivery, eliminating chance of error at point of installation on board. With the iECDIS™ ENC service from Jeppesen, the worldwide database can be loaded in minutes from one DVD. Alternatively and uniquely with iECDIS™, chart updates can be done automatically over GSM using our integral GSM modem.

iECDIS™ Jeppesen T&P Information Overlay.

T&P’s are temporary and preliminary notices that are contained within the regular updates indicating if a particular navigational hazard is of either a temporary nature or an approaching point to note. With iCHART we’ll provide you with free of charge NtMs and T&P updates. And what’s even better, you won’t have to do anything to receive them! In most cases they are automatic! Designed to improve safety for you and allow better voyage planning, you’ll be able to see how a planned route may be affected in the future by T&P’s.

233Flexible Licensing Solutions To Suit You

iECDIS™ Jeppesen Direct LicensingDirect licensing is the basic licensing model. Simply buy in advance the charts that you require for a

subscription period of either 3, 6 or 12 months. For ships sailing on a fixed route (e.g. liner trade) then direct licensing is the best solution and it’s cheaper to take out a 12 month subscription rather than 4 x 3 month subscriptions. However, this can have safety implications. If, for example, a ship needs to deviate off of its intended route, then a new license will have to be bought for a new chart.

iECDIS™ Jeppesen Dynamic LicensingDynamic licensing gives you access to the entire ENC chart database. Every chart that’s viewed and used is then invoiced for and you’re also invoiced for charts that are viewed and not used - think of it as pay-as-you-view. Dynamic licensing is a user friendly and flexible ENC Service as it ensures immediate access to ENC licenses whenever they’re needed.

Subscription and Credit LimitAt the start of the subscription period, you’ll be asked if you want to enable dynamic licensing. You can control the chart portfolio, credit and invoice limit, invoice period and reporting interval to manage your subscription and avoid spiralling costs for chart cells viewed in error but not used. Of course, the subscription area can be extended whenever required if your ship’s trading habits change. The size of credit limit is based on estimated yearly costs for the ship. When accessing new cells, the licensing costs for the actual cells will be subtracted and the credit limit will be reduced accordingly.

Please note that dynamic licensing can be switched on or off whenever required. The minimum default license period for individual cells is 3 months.

You have 2 options to enable licenses to new cells:

1. Navigation Mode - When the iECDIS™ is set to navigation mode, licenses to new cells are automatically generated as soon as the ship enters a new cell. This ensures that you always have ENC licenses for the charts surrounding the ship’s position.

2. Planning Mode - When the iECDIS™ is in planning mode, licenses to new cells are activated by panning or zooming into a new cell. Since the licensing process in planning mode is automatic, you will be informed about this every time you enter this mode.

2

Step-By-Step Guide to Direct Licensing

1. Choose charts - Assess your voyage route and choose the charts that cover that particular area of operation

2. Choose subscription period - Assess the best subscription period before deciding, based on ship employment

3. Order & pay for licensed charts - Simply order and pay for the charts you require

4. Start navigating - Now you are ready to start route planning and sailing!

11iECDIS™ Jeppesen Flat Fee ENC ServiceThe Flat Fee ENC service is the world’s only such service offering you complete transparency in ENC

4iECDIS™ Jeppesen OpenENC (PAYS)

The iECDIS™ Jeppesen Open ENC licensing option is a PAYS (Pay-As-You-Sail) service that relies on a tracking device to report a ship’s position through the iECDIS™ Jeppesen hardware tracker. Once a ship’s position has been noted then it can analysed which charts it’s used and bill for them accordingly. For multiple chart areas, the two best scales are used for billing purposes. This freedom and flexibility to access the global ENC database is the best solution for ease of use and safety of operations and there is no administration involved on the part of the operator. Pay only for the charts that are used whilst at the same time have the privilege to access all charts. All charts are fully licensed to enable route planning with no extra charge. Installation of the entire ENC database can be done in 10 minutes with a single license to open all charts. OpenENC is the best licensing solution for ships in the tramp trade operating in the spot market for extended periods of time. There’s an annual service fee of US$ 1,825 payable in advance which equates to only US$ 5 per day!

Early Adoption – The Only Option for Pioneers and InnovatorsYou need to know when your IMO mandate is due and prepare for the switch-over in advance. But why wait until the last minute!? By choosing to adopt iECDIS™ early you can take advantage of the many benefits of electronic chart navigation.

The biggest barrier many owners have to early adoption is cost. Why spend money now when you don’t have to? Because you can actually save money as well as improving performance, reducing risk, increasing safety and saving time.

A challenge we are seeing at the moment from navigators is trust in electronic charts. They say why now when we’ve been using paper charts for centuries!? In truth, ECDIS will reduce the risk of accidents such as grounding by removing the risk of human error. With intelligent overlays on the chart – weather, tides, radar, AIS, piracy risk areas – more informed navigational decisions can be made without having to consult multiple sources.

The iECDIS™ provides you with automatic route planning with all way points automatically updated by weather and tidal input. You don’t have to do a thing! Once your course is plotted then simply allow the iECDIS™ to select the best route.

But, safety, risk and performance aren’t the only reason to adopt early. With iECDIS™ Jeppesen Professional+ you can take advantage of a global private chart database for seamless vector chart coverage. For areas not yet covered by ENCs simply switch to the Professional+ database to continue using electronic charts but remember to use paper charts as the primary means of navigation.

The Professional+ database is identical in every aspect to the official ENC’s, the only difference being that it isn’t official, and what’s better is that they’re much cheaper!. By adopting iECDIS™ now and filling it with Professional+ charts rather than official ENCs, you can practise with electronic charts that act, feel and look like ENCs before your IMO implementation date to really feel confident with electronic chart navigation. A longer transition period will mean that when the time comes to switching over to digital for good, you won’t be faced with such a daunting task and a cultural shock.
