Will you consider becoming a STRIDE officer?

By Hellena Smejda, STRIDE Treasurer

Recently I was putting together a historical chart of STRIDE officers, and found that a core group of about a dozen individuals has held these positions for the past decade or longer. Included are competitors, professionals and just plain riders. I moved here from Illinois in 2004, where I was editor of the local Dressage/Eventing organization’s newsletter for several years. Being part of IDCTA had broadened my perspective and increased my friendships. So, I immediately joined STRIDE. Before I knew it, I became Membership Secretary, then Ad Manager, and then Treasurer. It has been a learning experience, and I have made new friends. Very often, people are afraid to become officers, fearing that the “clique” will exclude them. But I have found in both professional (publishing and public relations) and equestrian organizations, that there are no cliques. Rather, there are individuals who step up again and again because no one else does. And that leaves the rest of us “off the hook.” In my experience, current officers welcome with open arms those individuals who want to serve and who can bring a new perspective and energy to the organization. Another hesitation is due to lack of time. This is a serious consideration. We have jobs, families, horses to take care of. We want to ride and show. We don’t want to get involved in the “politics.” Yes. These are all valid concerns. But the fact remains: STRIDE needs officers if we are to continue. For 2012, I’m running for President. Not because I have a lot of spare time. Granted, I

board my horses, so I don’t have to mow, fix fences, etc. I’m also self-employed, so I have some flexibility in time. On the other hand, I’m single and work to support myself and my horses. I’m running because I believe that Ocalans are fortunate to have such a large Dressage and driving community. That together we can continue to improve our skills. That we can continue to provide opportunities to learn (clinics, lectures, meetings) and to test our knowledge (shows). That we can serve as a social circle for natives and newcomers. These are important “quality of life” factors we enjoy. Would you please consider becoming an officer? The duties as listed in our Bylaws are included here. Plus, every current officer would be happy to discuss just what time and effort is involved. Our phone and email contact info is listed on page one of this newsletter. You can nominate yourself via email to Charlotte Trentelman: [email protected]. The election will be held at the December 15 general membership meeting, and the new officers installed at the end-of-year gathering and awards banquet (see invitation on page 11 of this issue).

Did you know?

Three STRIDE members have qualified for the USDF Regional Championships? The event will be held at the HITS Post Time Farm October 14 through 16. STRIDE will be sponsoring a class, as well as a tack stall for participants.

Our accomplished members include Loretta

Lucas, Judy Downer, and Joanne Solch. Congratulations, ladies, and may you have an

excellent show!

Accurately Estimating Your Horse’s Weight by: Casie Bazay, BS, NBCAAM September 15, 2011, Article # 18827 <http://www.thehorse.com/Bio.aspx?ID=724>

Auburn University researchers recently examined three commonly used methods of estimating equine weights other than with a livestock scale. One commonly used method stood out as a more accurate approach. A livestock scale is the most accurate, but often not available to most horse owners. In a current study, funded by the Alabama Horse Council, researchers weighed 145 adult horses of varying breeds and body types on a portable livestock scale. Then three commonly used methods were compared with the scale weights:

A commercially available weight tape (following the directions on the tape);

Using the estimation formula <http://www.thehorse.com/Tool/Weight-Calculator.aspx> : (kg)=(heartgirth2 x body length) / (11,880 cm3) with length defined as "measuring from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock" (termed the "point measurement"); and

Using the same estimation formula listed above, this time with length being defined as "measuring from the point of shoulder to the widest point of the stifle and tail when viewed from the rear" (termed the "stifle measurement").

All three of the methods used underestimated the horses' weights, however, one method had a smaller margin of error than the other two. Key findings included:

The point measurement gave the most accurate estimates, underestimating weights by an average of 17.25 kg, or approximately 38 lbs; and

The commercial weight tape gave the most inaccurate estimates, underestimating weights by an average of 65.81 kg, or approximately 145 lbs.

The researchers concluded, "No method is perfect, but when a scale is unavailable, the formula, where estimated weight (kg)=(heartgirth2 x body length) / (11,880 cm3), appears to be the best choice for estimating body weight."
