Had it been developed, it would have been the first aircraft to combine the size and conventionality of an aircraft with the versatility of a helicopter. It would have been able to benefit paratroopers by landing them in an area that would have given them an initial advantage in battle. Regular transports and gliders would not have had the possibility and would have had to land in areas that would have given them ample “runway.” It would have also been an ideal land based aircraft for water operation searching for and rescuing downed pilots and locating submarines.

The P. 1003 Weserflug was an early 1938 design for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor aircraft. The wings were mounted high on the fuselage and hinged in the middle to allow the outer half to rotate up to 90°. A centralized engine operated both abnormal-ly large propellers through a system of drive shafts. This was a very complicated design which incorporated many fail points. Im-provements in the motor and aerodynamic technology would have been paramount in making this aircraft viable. The closest relative to this aircraft is the V-22 Osprey, which con-tinues to be dangerous to test pilots today.
