Dear Readers,Welcome to issue two of al manhal for 2016. We have a potent mix of

stories for you this time around, with a big emphasis on the future.

Our main feature story revisits PDO’s ongoing efforts to secure strong and sustainable future production of oil and gas. At the forefront of these efforts are the company’s multi-billion dollar Mega projects, and in this issue we turn the spotlight on the Yibal Khuff project. This initiative aims to provide a new lease of life for one of Oman’s longest-established fields, while also tapping into a vital new source of natural gas production.

More future-thinking is on display in our story about Nibras, a home grown technology platform that is designed to unlock the benefits of Big Data for PDO. This system now has hundreds of users across the company, with the latest innovation taking the power of Nibras out into the field to help improve the way oil and gas facilities are operated and maintained.

As well as looking at technical innovations like these, we also turn our attention to the human side of the oil and gas business, and in particular the work of PDO’s Community Relations department. This group provides a vital conduit between PDO and the residents of towns and villages that neighbour its operations. They are there to answer questions and resolve grievances, but also to help ensure that the communities are rewarded for granting the company its all-important ‘social license to operate’.

Changing society’s attitudes to the environment is a key driving force for the EcOman Centre, a PDO Gift to the Nation which opened in 2011. Hamed Al Battashi has been a curator at the Centre since 2014, and he gave us some fascinating insight into the future environmental challenges facing the world, which you can read about in this issue’s Our People profile.

Finally, our centre pages are dominated by nature’s gentle giants – whales – and their fellow sea going mammals the dolphins. Oman’s coastal waters are known to contain at least 20 species of whales and dolphins, making the Sultanate one of the world’s up and coming hotspots for whale watchers.

A home grown technology platform to help improve the way oil and gas facilities are operated and maintained

PDO is gathering and using production data in ever smarter ways, thanks to a technology platform that is the envy of the industry.

Big Data – it’s everywhere these days. We walk around with smartphones and tablets containing processing power which would have required a room full of computers just a generation or two ago. And businesses across the world can now use data to operate more smartly, eliminating some of the human guesswork and judgement calls that can be so risky.

PDO has long been focused on exploiting data to optimise production from its reservoirs, as well as helping it to work more efficiently and economically. One of the first major initiatives in this area was a data platform called Shurooq. Launched more than a decade ago, Shurooq provided a bespoke, web-based dashboard that allowed users to view a collection of well data gathered from sensors and gauges placed in and around the wells themselves.

Shurooq was a useful tool but it had its limitations, not least that users were required to spot anomalies which might require further investigation. Even with a trained and experienced eye this was not always an easy task, given the enormous quantity of data placed at employees’ fingertips.

Some years later, with technology moving ahead in leaps and bounds, PDO had the opportunity to replace Shurooq with a better, more automated and more flexible successor.

became reality, with the launch of the Nibras system. Nibras is a wholly different animal to Shurooq, with many more facets to what it offers PDO. This is because although it was built in-house, it makes use of a whole bunch of third party components, which combine to create an incredibly powerful and versatile tool.

One of Nibras’ most important features is what is known as exception based surveillance (EBS). This means the system is programmed to look for data variables that are out of sync with where they should be, and then flag them up to users automatically.

An example would be a well where production has dropped from its usual levels. At the moment a set parameter is breeched, it triggers an alert that is a prompt for the user to investigate further, with a view to fixing the problem.

appreciate the enormous advantage this automated spotting of the needle in the haystack gives to those responsible for looking after PDO’s oilfield assets.

These activities include facility management and reservo i r management. And it’s a logical step, when you consider how interrelated the different elements of the oil and gas production process are. For example, deploying gas lift (where gas is injected into the production tubing to reduce the hydrostatic pressure of the fluid column) in a well requires a compressor, which is surface facility equipment, and very often the produced hydrocarbons will pass into a bulk separator, which is also surface facility equipment. So, bringing the measurement of the surface and subsurface processes together into one big data model allows PDO to manage its assets in an integrated fashion, as seamlessly as the flow of oil.

Mobile Nibras: Moving from the office to the site

Another key element in the rollout of Nibras has been to take it from the office to the oilfield. In doing so, the project has joined forces with another PDO initiative called Smart Mobile Worker, or SMW for short.

The purpose of SMW is to combine industrial-spec mobile devices with new ways of working to help employees in the interior operate more safely, efficiently and effectively. In essence, it enables field operatives to bring their office with them, making use of PDO’s own Wi-Fi network as well as portable, plug-and-play Wi-Fi access points powered by batteries.

Until recently, the SMW devices didn’t have real-time access to Nibras. This meant that if an operative was out in the field fixing something they had to report back to PDO HQ to ask someone there to check via Nibras if the fix had worked.

Given the remoteness of many interior locations, such communications were not always easy to carry out. Sometimes the operative would not be able to get through, and would leave the site only to discover that there was still an issue with the equipment they’d tried to fix, forcing them to go back to it.

Mobile Nibras helps the field engineers cut out the middle man and get straight to the data they need. Now they simply access Nibras on their smartphones and tablets, interrogate the real-time well data and work out for themselves whether their fix has been successful.

As well as the safety angle of eliminating unnecessary journeys within the interior, the implementation of Mobile Nibras is reckoned to save an average of around an hour for every job undertaken in the field, resulting in greatly improved efficiency.

Interest from around the world

Given its bespoke specification and the fact that it was built in-house, it’s perhaps not surprising that Nibras is a unique package within the oil and gas industry; one that has attracted the attention of other companies operating in this field. The Nibras team reports that industry visitors are regularly blown away by what it can do.

W ith some 27 in-house software developers working on the platform, PDO expects a host of further Nibras enhancements and applications to be launched in the coming years, covering areas such as workflow management and smarter modelling to support oil and gas operations.

As with all aspects o f t echno log i ca l development, the future is as limitless as it is exciting. It promises to keep PDO at the forefront of the world’s ‘smart’ oil and gas companies, allowing Big Data to keep the oil and gas wells flowing freely for years to come.

Switching from ‘traditional’ well monitoring to Exception Based Surveillance (EBS) via the Nibras platform has completely transformed the management of Yibal wells, which between them account for around 6% of PDO’s total production.

Previously, the Yibal operations staff would have to spend around an hour each morning searching for ‘problem’ wells. Using Nibras EBS they now automatically receive a list of such wells, with the production loss ‘alarms’ prioritised according to their severity. The benefit of this is clear: with less time spent looking for problems it means more time can be devoted to fixing them.

With this abundance of information at hand, it means users are now able to diagnose the root cause of the ESP problem in around three to five minutes, as opposed to the 25 minutes which was typical pre-Nibras.

With greater confidence in their diagnosis, the team can often eliminate the need for a physical well and pump inspection, meaning a fix can be instigated around a week earlier than previously. It’s reckoned that when every benefit is added up the use of Nibras EBS in Yibal equates to half a man-year of employee time saved, while also preventing a significant volume of deferment (lost production).

Not only that, but the Yibal team has been able to use the time saved in detecting and fixing wells to work on optimising production from those that are doing OK but have scope for improvement. And Nibras has again come to their aid, by providing ‘optimisation alarms’ to help them target their well improvement efforts. Although it’s still early days for this process it has already been credited with thousands of barrels of additional oil production.

With a concession area that covers around a third of Oman, PDO is a neighbour to many communities up and down the country.

Like most neighbours, both PDO and the villages and towns it operates alongside have rubbed along reasonably well over the years. While

nobody would claim

that oilfield operations can be conducted without any impact to the surrounding environment, PDO has always sought to mitigate any negatives by providing training, employment, community facilities and sometimes basic services such as drinking water.

Since the wave of public protests that swept across the Middle East region in 2011, however, neighbouring communities have been seeking more

from PDO: more dialogue, more direct support and more vocational opportunities.

At the cutting edge of the company’s response to that challenge is the PDO Community Relations department. This is a group of professionals based in Mina

Al-Fahal and out in the

field, with offices in Fahud, Qarn Alam, Bahja, Nimr, Marmul and Harweel. In all, there are 14 Community Relations Officers (CROs), who are supported by assistants as well as dedicated drivers, who rack up the miles taking them out to meet the people face-to-face.

the eyes and ears of PDO throughout the concession area. Each of the six local offices has an open door policy, allowing people to come with their questions, requests and grievances.

The CROs have also built good working relationships with the local governors and Walis in their areas, as well as liaising with the tribal sheikhs and influential dignitaries.

The ultimate aim is to ensure that community issues do not degenerate into business interruption. For example, the team has become more

closely involved with the impact assessments for major oil and gas projects, working with asset teams, and relevant internal disciplines like legal and HSE departments to try to enhance the positive impacts while reducing the negative ones. It also

maintains a regular two-way dialogue with communities living around these projects, so that any potential problems can be proactively headed off before they occur.

Supporting budding scholarsOne of the centrepieces of PDO’s

community relations strategy is the scholarships programme, which aims at enhancing the educational level – and hence opportunities for employment – among young Omanis in the concession area.

Each year, PDO gives up to 200 high school graduates a chance to continue their university education, sponsored by PDO and under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education. The scheme is open to everyone fitting certain educational criteria, with applications accepted online via the Higher Education Admission Centre (heac.gov.om).

The Community Relat ions department is currently looking at ways to further enhance the scholarship scheme, as well as building an alumni programme to forge a link with past graduates and support their future

careers in cooperation with PDO’s National Objectives programme, which aims to increase the Omanisation levels at contractors’ workforce.

Land Allocation Community Relations supports the

Omani government in the process of land allocation within the vast concession area. When the government wants to allocate plots in the concession area for commercial, industrial or residential use, or for development projects, PDO has to confirm there will be no impact on its present or future operations as well as ensuring that its future work does not hinder government development plans in the area.

So Community Relations consults all the different interested teams (such as exploration, pipelines and facilities) to produce a co-ordinated response. If there are no issues, the Company can issue a ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC), allowing development to go ahead.

Crunching numbers to better serve communities

A good deal of the team’s work today is data-driven. The current PDO community relations strategy has been enormously influenced by the findings of a socio-economic study conducted on PDO’s behalf by Sultan Qaboos University, which highlighted areas for development and logged demographic changes that are taking place in the interior.

And data is set to play an increasing role in community-centric efforts in future, too. Starting this year, an intensive programme of community and operations profiling is being carried out, gathering together information on demographics, community services, tribal allegiances and a host of other factors. This will help PDO to better understand its operational impacts

and mitigations, as well as steering decision-making on future social investments, grants and donations.

But while data will play an important part in determining where the resources go, at its heart this is still a people role – one where an understanding of international best practice in Social Performance (SP), plus human psychology, a willingness to listen and a desire to see thriving, productive communities are all essential.

This is why Community Relations is now collaborating with the Shell Group on an ambitious programme to evaluate Social Performance capabilities both in the team and across the wider PDO network, with a view to introducing international best practice in key areas that fall within the SP remit.

Each member of the Community Relations Team is also hand-picked for their abilities in these areas, ensuring that communities across the concession area will always find a listening ear whenever they want to speak to their neighbour.

OUR EXPERTISE

The Yibal field has been one of the jewels in PDO’s crown for almost 50 years. It was in fact the Company’s first major discovery, back in 1962, although it was not until 1968 that oil production began.

In 1977, some further reservoirs were discovered in the Yibal area. These reservoirs, known as Upper Khuff and Lower Khuff/Sudair, sit much deeper and also differ in that their hydrocarbon content is sour. This means the oil and gas have a significant quantity of highly toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2S) mixed in.

At the time the new reservoirs were discovered, PDO lacked the technology to produce and handle sour hydrocarbons of this magnitude. As a result, plans to develop them were shelved as the Company switched its attention to more viable prospects.

Today, though, PDO has become a world leader in the field of sour oil and gas development, not least through its ground-breaking activities in the Harweel area. So, there was real impetus

to go back and make a concerted attempt to land the considerable prize on offer at Yibal Khuff.

Associated and non-associated gas

Aside from technology, there was another challenge to be overcome, however. And in order to appreciate its significance, it is important to understand the ‘ownership’ structure that exists for different types of gas produced in Oman.

In a nutshell, any gas that comes out of the ground as part of normal oil production is designated associated gas, and it ‘belongs’ to the company producing the oil. On the other hand, gas produced from reservoirs where no oil is present is referred to as non-associated gas, and this comes under the jurisdiction of Oman’s government.

The Upper Khuff reservoir contains oil and some associated sour gas, while the Lower Khuff/Sudair reservoir is exclusively non-associated sour gas.

To integrate the production from both into a single facility (a necessity for the economics of the project) required both paymasters – PDO and the government – to take a pragmatic approach based on big picture numbers, rather than installing a vastly expensive network of meters and gauges to divide the spoils more precisely.

Reaching across – not through – the Yibal field

With the foundations in place, it was time to tackle some of the many complexities of this Mega project. Among the most significant of these is the existing Yibal field, with its numerous wells and spaghetti trails of pipelines and flowlines criss-crossing the territory.

There would simply be no way to start drilling for sour oil and gas close to the existing producing oil and gas

facilities, so the only option was to come in from the side. As such, many of the Yibal Khuff wells will be drilled under an angle or horizontally, reaching across from a location around 5 km away from the main Yibal field.

PDO is no stranger to the art of horizontal wells, having drilled its first ones back in the mid-1980s at Saih Rawl. As part of this project, some 46 new sour oil/gas wells will be drilled into the Upper/Lower Khuff and Sudair reservoirs. Their production will flow into three remote manifold stations (RMS), which in turn feed the technological showpiece of the project: the new, state-of-the art Central Processing Facility (CPF).

Central Processing Facility – Genius and Complex

The Yibal Khuff CPF represents the most complex project of its kind ever undertaken by PDO, primarily due to the need to receive commingled sour oil and gas and then turn it into separate flows of sweet oil and gas, which will be pumped into PDO’s Main Oil Line and the Government Gas Pipeline respectively.

The treatment of the incoming fluids will work like a production line, one step at a time. The first stage is known as primary processing; this involves large separator tanks which allow the gas to bubble up to the surface – think of

the reaction when you open a bottle of cola and this will give an idea how primary separation works.

From there, the separated gas and liquids go for further treatment to clean them up. The commingled gas from the different reservoirs contains both H2S (around 2%) and CO2 (around 3%) making it both toxic and corrosive. The gas goes through a treatment unit that removes H2S and CO2. This process is called gas sweetening.

From there, the sweet gas passes through a molecular sieve to remove water and impurities and a hydrocarbon dew pointing unit to remove liquid hydrocarbons so that it can meet all of Oman’s stringent export specifications. Only then will it be compressed into the Government Gas pipeline.

The separated H2S and CO2 gas stream goes through a further treatment unit that turns them into liquid sulphur and a residual gas stream that can be emitted to the atmosphere safely.

After the elemental sulphur is

removed, it will be poured into solid blocks, which are totally inert and safe, and stored in an adjacent storage site. The reason for storing it is because sulphur has many uses as a feedstock to chemical and other industries, and while there is no market for it today, Oman’s government is thinking ahead to the potential development of these industries within the Sultanate.

Meanwhile, the oil/water mixture will flow through to another separation facility, which splits the two components so they can be treated individually. The oil will pass through a number of processes to remove salt and other impurities, while the water is also treated on site.

Also integrated within the CPF is a power generating station that incorporates technology to recover waste heat and use it to generate steam. This adds considerably to the project’s energy efficiency, not least because some of the steam will be depressurised and used for additional electricity generation, with the rest

being utilised in the desulphurisation processes.

A new way of managing Mega projects

As well as the technological ground being broken, the Yibal Khuff project is also being managed in a different way to how PDO has done things in the past.

Using the Rabab-Harweel Integrated Project as their inspiration, the Yibal Khuff team is taking on the mantle of project manager, instead of outsourcing this role.

In the new set-up, engineering and procurement services will be provided by one contractor – Petrofac – while construction will be done by Galfar Engineering & Contracting Company. By taking the project management reins, PDO expects to be better able to keep the lengthy build phase on track, not least because the company has already learned so much from other recently completed major projects, like Harweel 2AB, Qarn Alam Steam and Amal Steam.

Technology cornerThere are numerous technological firsts associated with the Yibal Khuff

project, but we’ve selected two to profile here: the first helping to facilitate the construction process and the second which will be deployed once the central processing plant is up and running.

ConstructSimKeeping on top of a construction project for facility as large and complex as

the Yibal Khuff CPF is no easy task. There are so many elements to manage: are the detailed engineering drawings ready? Does the construction team have all the materials they need on site? Has everything been prefabricated before the site installation can commence?

All this information and more is being made available in real time thanks to the first use within PDO of a software platform called ConstuctSim. It works in 4D, where the fourth dimension is time. This means that time is integrated within the bigger picture, which is provided by a 3D graphical model of the plant under construction.

As such, a ConstructSim user merely has to click on the image for the part of the plant they are interested in and it will bring up all relevant information on materials availability, approved for construction drawings, construction specifications, etc. This allows the construction contractor to be kept fully in the picture at all times, reducing delays and disputes and helping to keep the project on schedule.

CANSOLV® tail gas treatingOman has some of the most stringent environmental specifications for sulphur

dioxide (SO2) emissions in the world. This is a positive thing and it’s something that PDO supports as part of the company’s desire to be a good corporate citizen.

It doesn’t come without technical challenges, however, not least in terms of the waste gas emissions from the CPF, given the sour nature of the hydrocarbons it will be dealing with.

Thankfully, the Shell group has devised a very clever sulphur scrubbing solution called CANSOLV®, which PDO will be using for the first time in the Yibal Khuff Project.

CANSOLV® is a chemical solvent that is highly selective to SO2. It absorbs the SO2, thus removing it from the waste gas stream, and the resulting liquid passes back into a sulphur recovery unit to be processed into elemental sulphur.

Off to a flying startSo, where are things at

today? The detailed design phase is well underway. This is where the precise specifications for plant and equipment are decided and orders placed with manufacturers around the world.

On the construction site itself, initial preparations are underway, with access roads being graded and accommodation facilities being readied for a construction workforce expected to number around 4,000 people at its peak.

The good news is that all this is representative of a project that is safe and running to time, if not a little ahead of schedule, as the experience and learnings gained from the trailblazing Rabab-Harweel Mega project begin to pay off.

There will no doubt be plenty more challenges ahead for the Yibal Khuff team. However, armed with the company’s renewed commitment to its Mega projects despite the prevailing low oil price, they are ready, willing and able to take the long road ahead. We will be watching – and reporting on – their progress with interest!

Hamed Al Battashi: Environmental Advocate

The EcOman Centre opened its doors to the public in February 2011

Outside of sport and the arts, there aren’t many opportunities to combine a job with a passionate interest. Hamed Al Battashi is lucky enough to have one of them.

Since 2015, Hamed has been a curator of PDO’s most recent Gift to the Nation, the EcOman Centre. Regular

readers of al manhal will know a bit about this facility, which opened its doors to the public in February 2011. Its mission is to spread the word about saving energy, as well as profiling the wide variety of renewable energy sources that can help us cut down on our use of fossil fuels.

Meet Hamed Al Battashi, curator of the EcOman Centre and a man dedicated to preserving the Sultanate’s amazing natural beauty.

A golden chanceThe chance to join the EcOman

curating team was one that Hamed jumped at. “I had done a degree in Biology and had taught the subject in schools before opting to continue my higher studies by taking a Masters in Environmental Science at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU),” he explained.

This combination of teaching skills and environmental knowledge is key to the curator’s role. “It’s a very public-facing position. We are there to show visitors around, explain how the exhibits work, and how they relate to energy use and environmental issues out in the real world. It’s great that PDO, as an oil and gas company, is prepared to look beyond its own business and say that the future belongs away from fossil fuels. That’s a strong message to deliver to the Omani society,” Hamed noted.

Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said,

Oman has long been considered among the leading lights in environmental awareness across the Middle East region. It was the first country in the region to establish a government ministry dedicated to the environment, back in the 1980s, and today there are numerous institutes and research centres contributing to the debate.

“I think His Majesty has always shown a major concern for our environment and wildlife. After he came to the throne in the 1970s and amid the public clamour for roads and schools, he also made sure time and resources were dedicated to re-establishing our native Oryx within a protected zone.”

Though such efforts, along with the environmental standards imposed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, have undoubtedly

been a positive thing, Hamed believes that Omani citizens have the biggest power to make a difference.

“I don’t think there are enough Omanis willing to take responsibility for our environment and in combating man-made climate change,” he argued. According to official statistics by the United Nations, our per capita CO2 emissions in 2011 reached 21.5 metric tonnes, against a global average of just 4.5 tonnes.

“We simply cannot go on polluting in this way. We need to face up to the effects of climate change within our country and region. This includes the higher incidence of damaging cyclones we’ve seen in recent years, as well as the intense heat waves. It’s vital we adjust the way we live our lives so that we become more responsible energy users.”

A tour inside EcOman CentreThese are also some of the key

messages that underpin the EcOman Centre. One of the centre’s most striking exhibits is a room featuring a series of real-time ticker board displays giving live, real time statistics on population growth, depletion of hydrocarbon resources, deforestation, CO2 emissions and other statistics that show just how profound Man’s impact on the planet has become.

“This is designed to give visitors a serious jolt, emphasising the dangers of persisting with our present way of life,” Hamed explained. “It also prepares them for the next zone within the centre, which we call Better World, where they can find out more about ways to save energy and also see how renewable energy is harvested and used.”

The final area visitors reach in their journey through the EcOman Centre celebrates PDO’s own environmental efforts. Included is a model of the company’s ground-breaking solar energy facility called ‘Miraah’, which

is contributing renewably-generated steam to the thermal EOR project at Amal field. There’s also a model of the artificial reed beds innovative project that’s been established at Nimr area, which is both cleaning up produced water and providing a unique wetland environment for wildlife.

“At PDO we’re proud of our environmental record,” Hamed said. “We were the first oil and gas company in the Middle East to achieve the

ISO14001 environmental accreditation and initiatives like Amal Solar Steam and the Nimr Artificial Reed Reds are something we’re always pleased to show off to VIP visitors and the public alike.”

Hamed’s missions is to reach people – particularly the younger generation – who haven’t yet had the chance to hear the environmental messages of the Centre. Working with the Environment Society of Oman (ESO), he helps to organise outreach sessions in schools and colleges, as well as undertaking initiatives such as cleaning beaches.

The EcOman Centre also participated in 2015 Muscat Festival. It also takes a prominent role in celebrating national and international environment celebrations, including Omani Environment Day, which this year was held on 8 January.

“We have strong relationships with a lot of the NGOs working in the environmental field, to ensure the messages the Centre wants to deliver reach as many members of the public as possible. In the future, we are looking to launch a national competition for schoolchildren to design devices relating to the production or use of renewable energy, which is something we’re all really excited about,” he revealed.

Outside of his ‘day job’, Hamed is closely involved with a range of environmental matters; not least his Masters project, in which he is investigating the occurrence of the chemical boron in some Omani groundwater.

“I was fortunate to secure funding from PDO for this project, in which I’m trying to pinpoint the source of this pollutant. I’ve already presented some of my findings at an international conference focused on environmental issues around water, which was hosted by SQU.”

Hamed enjoys exploring the natural world, and can be regularly found hiking through some of the Sultanate’s picturesque terrain. He said: “I’ve travelled through most of Oman, and in doing so I’ve seen some of the impacts we’ve already made on our natural environment. There’s a lot of beauty and a richness of wildlife even in the desert regions. People need to be better educated about how they can protect these ecosystems, because once a species dies out it is gone for good.”

He’s also keen for the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ ethos to become more prevalent in Omani households. “The recycling culture has yet to really take off here in Oman, mainly due to a lack of awareness and education. We need more incentives for people to start recycling, backed by strong policies.

“The time to act is now – people have to take their own steps to reduce their impact on our environment, otherwise we’ll end up burning the Earth.”

OUR OMAN

For the next in our series celebrating some of Oman’s natural and cultural highlights, we take a trip to the sea – or more accurately under it.

The warm waters off the Omani coast are a rich source of marine life, as anyone who has watched a fishing boat land its daily catch will testify. But did you know they are home to at least 20 species of whales and dolphins?

The southern Omani coast is the prime spot for whale watching, with the seas there being outstandingly rich in the nutrients whales need. So rich in fact that the pod of humpback whales living in these waters is unique among this species in not migrating in search of food, leaving it genetically distinct from all other humpbacks.

Dolphins visit Omani waters pretty much all year round and can often be seen swimming off the coast of Muscat and Musandam. Species include the spinner dolphin, which is capable of acrobatic leaps that lift it completely out of the water. It’s also possible to spot long nosed common dolphins and – more rarely – false killer whales, which resemble the predator of that name but are actually members of the oceanic dolphin family.

While a google search will bring up plenty of contemporary articles, the reference literary work on Oman’s whales and dolphins remains the book published in 1994 and titled Whales And Dolphins Along The Coast Of Oman. Now out of print, second-hand copies of the book can still occasionally be found for sale online. There is also a dedicated whale room at Oman’s Natural History Museum in Muscat, the centrepiece of which is the skeleton of a sperm whale that washed up on the Omani shore in the 1980s.

البحار العمانية، بل على وجه التحديد يف أعماقها.تعد بحار عمان مبياهها الدافئة مالذا ممتازا للكائنات احلية، وليس من سمع عن الصياد العماين كمن رآه وهو

يرسو بقاربه ليحط عنه صيده الثمني كل صباح. لكن هل تعلم أن البحار العمانية تؤوي ما ال يقل عن 20 نوعا من احليتان والدالفني؟

توجد أفضل نقطة ملشاهدة احليتان يف البحار جنوب عمان نظرا لكونها مصدرا غنيا بالغذاء الذي حتتاجه احليتان إىل حد أن احليتان احلدباء التي تقيم يف هذه املياه فريدة عن باقي بنات

جنسها وخمتلفة عنها جينيا لكونها ال تهاجر بحثا عن الطعام.

أما الدالفني فتزور أنواع منها املياه العمانية كثريا طوال العام، وأحيانا ميكن مشاهدتها بقدرته على يتميز الذي الدوار الدلفني بينها على قبالة شواطئ مسقط ومسندم، من القفز البهلواين بكامل جسمه إىل خارج املاء. وميكن كذلك مشاهدة الدلفني الشائع ذي األنف الطويل، باإلضافة إىل احلوت القاتل املزيف، ولكنه نادر، واسمه جاء نظرا ملشابهته

للحوت القاتل، لكنها يف احلقيقة جزء من عائلة الدالفني البحرية.

وملن أراد االستزادة حول هذا املوضوع فمن املمكن العثور على أبحاث حديثة متاحة كتاب هو العمانية والدالفني باحليتان يتعلق ما يف مرجع أهم لكن اإلنرتنت، شبكة يف

اغتنم حمد الفرصة لاللتحاق بفريق أمناء املركز، ويعرب عن ذلك بقوله: “كانت دراستي تخرجي وبعد األحياء، جمال يف اجلامعية درست مادة األحياء يف مدارس خمتلفة قبل أن أقرر مواصلة املاجستري بجامعة السلطان

قابوس يف جمال العلوم البيئية.”

ترفد القطاع البيئي باملعارف املستجدة.

بدأ إعداد التصاميم الهندسية األولية ملشروع "جبال-خف" يف ديسمرب 2012، واكتملت يف أغسطس 2014

الوصول إلى المكامن أفقيا، ال باختراق حقل “جبال” رأسيا

احلقول العمانية، بالتزامن مع مباشرة استغالل مصدر حيوي جديد إلنتاج الغاز الطبيعي.

النفط الفنية فإننا ال نهمل أيضا اجلانب اإلنساين لعمليات االبتكارات وإذ جنول بكم بني هذه والغاز؛ حيث نيمم شطر األنشطة التي يضطلع بها فريق دائرة عالقات اجملتمع بالشركة، والذي يعمل مبثابة حلقة وصل بني الشركة واملواطنني يف البلدان والقرى اجملاورة ملواقع العمليات. هذا الفريق مهمته اإلجابة على استفسارات املواطنني وحل مشكالتهم، بل واملساعدة يف رد اجلميل إىل اجملتمع احمللي نظري منحه الشركة “ترخيص العمل” الذي ميثل لها أهمية قصوى.
