Welcome to meet portugAlin neW York FestiVAl

Portugal and the United States of America

have outstanding bilateral relations that

date back to the eighteen century, with

Portugal being one of the first countries

to officially recognize the Union. It is also

interesting to note that the Consulate of the

US in Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, is the

oldest continuously running US diplomatic

office in the world.

It is therefore important to continue

promoting awareness in the US for the

values of contemporary Portugal. In this

context it is particularly interesting to

recognize that the festival “Meet Portugal in

NY” renders recognition of the exceptionally

vibrant Portuguese community that thrives

in New York.

I congratulate the promoters of the events

for their efforts and sincerely hope that the

New Yorkers and other visitors will enjoy

“meeting” with Portugal in June.

Portugal is the closest European country to

the US and a few thousand miles of Atlantic

Ocean are all that separate Portugal from

New York City. This June, a series of events

across New York will give New Yorkers a

chance to see another side of Portugal.

And it is with great expectations that we

launch the second edition of the Festival.

The reality is that the Portuguese community

in New York is so diversified and successful

in so many ways, that the opportunity was

there for a closer encounter: let us “Meet

Portugal in NY”.

The Festival is being organized in close

partnership with private Portuguese

companies and institutions that do

business in New York, as well as with some

of the most respected New York cultural

institutions. As so, this Festival will be a

great opportunity to network with members

of the trade community and create business

opportunities.

I do want to thank and recognize the

enthusiastic welcome, given by the

promoters of the different events, at our

idea of launching this umbrella campaign,

which will profile a contemporary Portugal

with its values of creativity and culture.

The Vista Alegre porcelain factory was founded in 1824, in Ílhavo, part of the Aveiro district (near the sea, in central Portugal). The company was the product of the heart and mind of a 19th century Portuguese entrepreneur and visionary, João Ferreira Pinto Basto. Throughout its history, the Vista Alegre brand has been closely linked to the cultural life of Portugal, though it has acquired along the years a strong international fame.

The company harmoniously combines tradition with modernity, and continues to be associated with the highest standards of elegance and functionality. Developing products with designers of world renown, Vista Alegre has collaborated with artists such as Sam Baron, Christian Ghion, Carsten Gollnick, Brunno Jahara, Bartek Mejor, Karim Rashid, and Joana Vasconcelos, among others.

sAturdAY, June 22

Vista Alegre owes its global success as much to creativity as it does to technical expertise and craftsmanship. Most of its products are hand-painted by master artisans and are strictly supervised throughout the numerous phases of the product manufacturing process.

Come and visit Vista Alegre’s New York showroom - usually exclusively open to the trade – exceptionally open to the public on June 22.

Details of the event:An event that will look into the historical and cultural heritage of the Jewish people and their descendants in the history of Portugal and in North America.

A historical tour of the Synagogue will precede the event, followed by a Q&A session and a reception, featuring Portuguese food and wines.

Jewish Heritage in Portugal:Despite previous attestations, it was between the V and the XV centuries that the Jewish community established itself in Portugal, contributing in different ways and within the space of ten centuries, to the flourishing of the Portuguese culture. Many members of this community, which included philosophers, humanists, scien-tists and dealers, were protected by the monarchy and participated in an active way in paramount moments of the Portuguese history.

In particular, worthy of remembering, the financial and scientific contributions during the Portuguese Exploration period and the great mathematician and cosmographer of the XVI century, Pedro Nunes, author of the “Treaty about the Sphere”.

In 1496, the Edict of Expulsion of the Jewish issued by the Spanish Catholic Monarchs and also enforced by the Portuguese mon-archs, obliged all Jewish people to convert and become Neo-Christians. Many of them left the country and others stayed profess-ing their faith, secretly. The signs and the inscriptions of that time can still be seen carved on the palaces of the ancient Jew-ish areas, in towns like Belmonte, Guarda, Castelo de Vide and Tomar.

This event is sponsored by the Portuguese National Tourist Office, Le Marais restau-rant (www.lemarais.net) and the Centro de Portugal Region (WWW.visitcentro.com).

Enjoy pairing Esporao wines with traditional Portuguese food and live Fado by Nathalie Pires.

Esporão S.A. is one of the leading privately held Portuguese producers of wines and olive oils. Twice awarded “Company of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos, a leading Portuguese wine magazine, Esporão has rapidly risen to the top of the Portuguese wine market. By 2007, Esporão’s wines were the top selling wines in the quality wine sector in Portugal.

Created in 1973, Herdade do Esporão is located in one of the most exciting, up-and-coming regions of Portugal—the Alentejo, 180 km south of Lisbon. Under the leadership of young João Roquette, Esporão is firmly headed in the direction of sustainable winegrowing, and devotes substantial energies to scientific and empirical research.

Since 2008 Esporão has been developing a new wine estate in the Douro Valley, Quinta dos Murças. The wines from this ancient region express themselves rather differently from those of the Alentejo, and here the older vines are up to 80 years of age.

Portugal has been producing Vinho Verde for over two thousand years, since the Romans reached the Atlantic bringing the vines and the commitment to produce great tasting wines.

Vinho Verde’s unique characteristics result from mild coastal temperatures, granitic soil, and ancient grape varieties that are always evolving.

The wines are unique, light and refreshing with fruit aromas and vivacious flavors. The balanced acidity, low alcohol and calorie content make Vinho Verde the perfect complement for a health-conscious cuisine. We hope that you have as much pleasure tasting these wines as the Vinho Verde Region has producing them.

Wines of Vinho Verde will once again celebrate the delicious wines of the region with the month-long Passport to Vinho Verde program! From June 1-30, Wines of Vinho Verde will partner with wine stores all over New York City to highlight the crisp, refreshing qualities of Vinho Verde wines. Visit www.winesofvinhoverde.com to see which wine stores are offering tastings and special discounts on your favorite wines from Vinho Verde!

São Jorge, 4 and 7 months aged, with creamy texture on the 4 month and a firm texture on the 7 month, have bold flavors with pronounced minerality and a bright lemony finish.

São Miguel, aged for 9 months, has a flavor personality that hints of burnt caramel, butterscotch, with a finish suggesting scotch whiskey.

Famoso, is a 3 month aged cheese with a creamy texture and fresh, herbal flavor.

The cheeses, that are being imported and distributed by Specialities, Inc. (http://specialitiesinc.com/) and will be available at all Fairway Market stores.

The archipelago of Azores, located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean about 2,400 miles from US and formed during volcanic and seismic activity, is a paradise of unsurpassed beauty. The rich and soft landscape is characterized by green and blue lakes, fertile prairies, grazing cattle, green pastures, and vineyards divided by walls of black basalt and lava stones.

It is from this serene and unspoiled landscape that the cheeses from Lactaçores (www.lactacores.pt), a union of Azores dairy cooperatives, are originated.

Staring the month of June, four types of Azorean cheeses, from Lactaçores, will be available for sampling and buying at all Fairway Market stores in the tri-state area.

The cheeses, produced from the milk of grass fed cows grazing on rich volcanic pastureland, are São Jorge, São Miguel, and Famoso.
