Introducing the Topic

Word CloudGive your students a copy of the word clouds from the previous page. Depending on their level of English, you may prefer to use either or both clouds. Explain that you are going to see theatre in English. In pairs, ask them to look at the word cloud and guess what the play might be about. Take feedback from the students as an open class discussion. What do they think the story is about? Why?
Topic BrainstormIf they haven’t already guessed, tell the students that the story is about explorers.Ask if they have heard of any explorers, real or imaginary (some good examples might be Chris-topher Columbus or Indiana Jones!). Now write these questions on the board:

What does a good explorer have?
In the same pairs, give your students 5 minutes to think of some ideas. They can usedictionaries and make notes if they want to.
Now make two columns on the white board, headed ‘a good explorer is…’ and ‘a goodexplorer has…’. Take suggestions from your class and make a list for each. We haveincluded some suggestions below:

Explorer job interviewsFinally, divide your class into groups of 4. Nominate one student from each group. He/she must leave the room. Outside, tell your group of nominees that they are explorers who are about to be interviewed for a job. They must think of their explorer name, their previous experience/discove-ries and any special skills they might have (Can they do karate or sword-fight? Can they sail a boat or fly a plane? Are they famous? What have they discovered?) Now, back inside the class-room, tell the remaining students that they are about to interview some different explorers for a job. They must prepare some questions. To help lower-level students you can write some modelquestions on the board:
Ask your ‘explorers’ to return to the room and monitor your class as the explorers are inter-viewed. Allow around 2 minutes per interview before changing the pirates around so that each group interviews several different pirates. This ac-tivity is good fluency practise and also revises in-troductions/personal questions.

Clara Loft and Minnesota Jones are explorers. They are looking for the Throne of Truth. It can answer any three questions. Clara and Minnie go to the Temple of Doom to find the Throne of Truth. They both want to ask the Throne about the things are most important to them… money, fame, health and love. But they don’t want to share it! Their fight for the throne takes them on an adventure around the world, ending on Easter Island, where they have an argument and waste the three questions.
Reading RaceThis is an interesting way to familiarize your students with the story.
Photocopy the synopsis above and pin in to the wall of your classroom. Divide students into teams of 3. Explain that one student is the runner and the other two are the secretaries. The runner must go to the board and read the text. S/he then returns to the secretaries and dictates as much of the text as
s/he can remember: this may a sentence, a few words or even individual words if the students find them difficult. The secretaries write it down. One of the secretaries
then becomes the next runner and returns to the board, so that all three team members take turns to be the runner. The game continues until the teams have written down the whole of the text (all three team members must have a completed copy). The first team to finish put their hands up are declared the winners and the game stops. The winning team then begin to read their completed synopsis aloud, one sentence at a time. The other teams check it with their ver-sions and you check it with the original, correcting any mistakes. During the correcting session ask for contributions from the other teams, too.
Now copy your group transcription neatly so that everybody has a correct copy. Finally, listen to our recording of the synopsis as a whole class as you read your transcription, to correct your pronunciation.

It will help your students to know these words from the play:
Copy the list of words onto a clean sheet of paper. Now listen to the recording and repeat the words aloud after Clara.
Working in pairs, try to figure out the meaning of the words. Write your translation in Spanish next to each word. Then, using a bilin-gual dictionary, check your answers and look for any words that you couldn’t guess.
TTo finish, test each other by covering your word list and taking it in turns to ask each other how to say the words in English, for example:
Antonio: How do you say ‘salud’ in English?Julia: Health. My turn! How do you say ‘respuesta’ in English?Antonio: Answer. My turn! How do you say… etc.
Continue until you have both guessed all of the words!

face.
I am the best adventurer and archaeologist in the world. Well almost the best. The best is
actually Clara Loft. Oh Clara! You’ll like Clara. She’s my girlfriend. We’ve been going out for… two days. I’m meeting her here because we’re on a dangerous mission to find the Throne of
Truth.
Hi! I work at Jim’s Gym. I’m an aerobics instructor and I’m Clara’s best friend!
My name is Mexico Jones, and I’m from Mexico.
I’m here to save my father, Minnesota Jones. Andale!

The explorers Clara Loft and Minnesota Jones meet at the Temple of Doom.
They want to find the Throne of Truth, which can answer any three questions.
Minnie goes inside the temple and recovers the Throne of Truth.
Clara tricks Minnie and steals the Throne.
She escapes, leaving Minnie to be eaten by snakes.
Minnie’s son, Mexico Jones, rescues him.
They disguise themselves and chase Clara.

Minnie: Of course I did, I’m the best explorer in the world! After you, of course. So why are we here?
Clara: Well, Minnesota, I need you to go into that temple and recover the Throne of Truth
Minnie: What’s the Throne of Truth?
Clara: The Throne of Truth grants you three questions. You can ask the Throne any three questions and it will answer you. Money, fame, health, love…
Minnie: Wow! Love? It’s okay, Clara, you know the answer to THAT question. And money? Can you ask questions about money?
Clara: Yes, money.
Minnie: Lots of money?
Clara: Yes, lots of money.
Minnie: Lots and lots and lots of money?
Clara: Yes! Now, go!
Minnie: But aren’t you coming with me?
Clara: No, I’ll stay here on the lookout. Besides, you’re so much better at this than I am. You’re so brave, you’re so strong, so very, very handsome. And you’re not afraid of snakes.
Minnie: Really? Gee, thanks a lot, Clara, you know how to say the nicest things. By the way, did you just say snakes? I can’t stand snakes!
Clara: No, of course not. I didn’t say snakes. No snakes. Go on, go, go, go then! I’ll be waiting here for you when you come back. My little Minnie-Poo!

The Throne of Truth is magical. When the moon is full, it can give you the answer to any three questions. You can ask about whatever you want: money, fame, health, world peace, love…
What questions would you ask the Throne of Truth? Write your questions in the spacebelow:
Role playNow, in pairs, show your partner your questions, and explain why you have chosen to ask each one. What do you think the answers might be?
Take it in turns to play the Throne of Truth. Read your questions aloud, one by one. Your partner plays the Throne of Truth, and must invent a reply for each question. Now change roles.
Money, money, money!The Throne of Truth is a very powerful tool. Clara and Minnie fight over it, because they think it can make them rich, famous and happy. But they have an argument and accidentally waste the three questions. Do you think they would have asked questions to make the world a better pla-ce? Or for their own personal benefit? ‘Throne Raiders’ is a spoof on action movies such as Tomb Rai-ders or Indiana Jones. After you have been to the theatre, why not watch a short scene from each of these films (in English, of course) with your students? How do the protagonists differ from Clara and Minnie? And what are the similarities? Who do
you think is the better explorer? And who has more fun? Make a list of similarities and differences with your students on the
white board.
