A Dream Realized!
Children’s Wing Open House November 28
A gala ribbon cutting for the new children’s wing of the
Emmaus Public Library took place at 2 p.m. Thursday, No-
vember 8. Children’s librarian Susan Monroe enlisted the
help of young library patrons to help with the ribbon cutting
honors.
The long-held dream is finally a reality. The 2,000 square-
foot addition provides a flexible area for educational programs
for children and gives the young adults designated space just
for them and their collections. The former children’s section is
now an adult reading lounge with a permanent Friends of the
Emmaus Public Library book sale area.
Check out the changes during the library’s open house
on November 28 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Library staff will
be happy to help you find your way around and locate special
sections that are important to you. Special guests include
Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Congratulations to Maryellen Kanarr, Library Director
Maryellen Kanarr has been named the new director of the Emmaus Public Library to
succeed Amy Resh. The Emmaus Adult Services Librarian for the past two years, she previously worked at both the Allen
and Parkland libraries.
Maryellen grew up in the Lehigh Valley and has fond memories of going to the library
with her mom for special events and read-ing programs.
After earning a bachelor's degree in English from East Stroudsburg University, Maryellen continued to visit the public library
as an adult for books--not only for her be-loved fiction, but also for information on
how to write a resume, how to cook, how to budget...basically how to adult.
The career book What Color is Your Para-chute? encouraged her to earn a master's
degree in Library Science from Kutztown University. With 16 years of experience as a librarian, Maryellen loves helping others
find new books, technologies, and experi-ences.
October 4th marked the annual busi-
ness meeting of the Friends of the Em-maus Public Library.
Members approved the budget, which includes a donation of $16,000 to the
library. Treasurer Joseph Pugliese noted that in 2018, the Friends had already contributed $21,171 to the library. The
sum included funds raised at the spring book sale, a special $5,000 donation to
help the library achieve an anonymous building fund donor’s $25,000 match and book cart sales.
Watch for news on the Second
Annual Books & Beer on March 20.
Officers Elected at Friends Annual Meeting

Summer Fun for Adults as Well as Kids
This year 280 adults signed up for the Em-
maus Public Library Adult Summer Reading
Club. Participants received a free tote bag
and a free book, sponsored by the Friends of
the Emmaus Public Library. Sixty percent of
the readers lived in Emmaus; 10% were
from Upper Milford; 8.6% from Macungie
borough; and the remainder from other are-
as. Last year, 269 patrons registered.
To kick off the summer reading program for
both adults and children, the library orga-
nized a carnival on Saturday, June 16th
that was a huge success! Fun games, a live
band, The Newspaper Taxis (pictured to the
right) and food trucks attracted an after-
noon crowd of almost 900.
Adults wrote 478 book reviews that func-
tioned as raffle tickets. Ten weekly basket
raffles and one grand prize basket were
awarded. Prizes were donated by the
Friends and generous local businesses in-
cluding Wawa, Gardens Alive!, Da Vinci Sci-
ence Center, Allentown Symphony, Volpe's
Sports Bar, Dorney Park & Wildwater King-
dom, Applebee's, Weis Markets of Emmaus,
Giant, Bethlehem Steel FC and Wegmans.
Other adult events included Yoga Rocks
with Emmaus Yoga, Fit Rhythms with
TAYHA, Stronger than Steel with Jeff Parks,
Music Bingo, Songs of the 60s & 70s, Yeah!
Yeah! Yeah! Beatles presentation, Tom Edi-
son’s Music by the Emmaus Historical Soci-
ety, and Backstage with Allentown Sympho-
ny director Diane Wittry. The closing event
was an all-ages pool party at Emmaus Com-
munity Pool on Thursday, August 23rd from
5p.m.-8p.m. and over 140 attended!
Over 500 children participated in the chil-
dren’s summer reading club and teens en-
joyed a series of literary lunches. A great
summer was had by all.

Thanks for Making the Spring Book Sale A Success!
Thanks to wonderful community support, the Friends
of the Emmaus Public Library raised $11,818.88 at
our 20th Annual Used Book Sale held on April 28 at
Lower Macungie Middle School.
We are extremely thankful that the East Penn School
District provides this beautiful facility for a sale
which is such an important fund-raiser for the
library.
The Friends are grateful for the support of R.L. Rep-
pert and its staff who transport the books from the
Emmaus Public Library to Lower Macungie Middle
School and then take the remainders back to the
library after the sale. The staff of the Emmaus Public
Works Department came out in force to help speed
along the loading and unloading in record time.
Members of the Lower Macungie Middle School Honor
Society and Boy Scouts from Emmaus Troops 80 and
71 did an outstanding job in helping to set up the
sale on Friday and break it down on Saturday.
The custodial staff of Lower Macungie Middle School
is so very helpful and patient throughout the sale. We
are so appreciative of their support. The sale is made
even more successful due to the cooperation of The
Nutrition Group, the East Penn School District’s food
service provider, which hosts a Nutrition, Health and
Safety Fair to run concurrently during much of the
Saturday book sale hours.
Members of the Emmaus Rotary Club as well as other
new volunteers came forward to help. We are grateful
for their help. An especially big shout out of thanks to
Carolee Baker who works almost year- round in reviewing and sorting book donations, then ar-
ranging them by category to make shopping even easier for our customers. And once again,
AI Orthodontics provided sturdy cloth bags, which are so appreciated by our customers and vol-
unteers. Kudos to Dolly Russel whose hand-made bookmarks helped us exceed last year’s sales
figures.
This annual sale is our major fundraiser. Books are now being collected year-round. Please drop
off your donations at the Emmaus Public Library.
Please note: The 2019 EPL Friends Spring Used Booksale will be April 13, the
second Saturday in April, instead of the fourth Saturday.
