Adam Malysz's Ski Jumping Hill

Short history

The first ski jumping hill in the valley of Malinka in Wisła was constructed in 1933.

The construction was made entirely of wood. The record of distance, set by

Mieczysław Kozdrun, was 41 m. In the following years the ski jumping hill was

renovated . It underwent the considerable changes in the 60s and 70s of the 20th

century. Then there was build the judges tower, the steel in-run and the calculation line

was moved to 105 meter. The first jumper who beat the distance of 100 m. was Janusz

Malik. The hill record belongs to Wojciech Skupien who reached the distance of 112.5

m. at the Polish Seniors Championships during the last competition held on the “old”

hill.

In the meantime

In October 2003 the foundation act of conversion of the ski jumping hill in Wisla was

signed. The original of the document placed in a special silver tube was built in as the

corner stone during the construction work in 2005. The work went according to the

plan until August 2006 when a landslide of the landing hill occurred. Eventually the

opening of the ski jumping hill took place not at the end of July 2007 but in September

of the following year.

Page 12: A Dear Sir or Madame,

12

The first competition

The first competition held on the newly built hill was combined with the official

opening ceremony. From 25th to 28th September 2008 there were held Summer

Championships of Poland in ski jumping as well as Nordic combined. The first jump

was made by Adam Malysz. During the inaugurating competition the record was

beaten several times. The first record holder was Pawel Slowiok who obtained the

distance of 123m. Adam Malysz who flew the distance of 132.5 m. won the individual

Championships of Poland and set the hill record. But he could delight with the success

for a very short time. On the following day, during the team competition, Marcin

Bachleda landed one meter farther.

On the road to the World Cup

The first international competition on the renovated hill was held in February 2009

and was a part of the Continental Cup competitions. The winners were the Austrians -

Stefan Thurnbichler on the first day and Andreas Kofler on the second. In September

of the same year there was held, for the first time, the final competition of Summer

Continental Cup. It was won by Marcin Bachleda who beat the rest of the competitors

including Adam Malysz. The world ski jumping leaders visited Wisła in August 2010

during FIS Ski Jumping Grand Prix known also as Summer Ski Jumping Grand Prix.

During the first competition the winner was Adam Małysz whereas on the second day

it was Kamil Stoch who turned out to be the best. On 9th January 2013 there was held,

for the first time in the history of the hill, an individual World Cup competition. Apart

from that, Wisla was an organization of World Cup on January 2014 and 2015.

Additionally, there has been regularly organized competitions of FIS Ski Jumping

Grand Prix since 2010 on Adam Malysz's Hill.

Tourist attraction

The ski jumping hill named after Adam Malysz is one of the most popular tourist

attractions in Wisla. The guests who visit the Beskid Mountains are eager to use the

chair lift, the tower and the café offering the view of the in-run and take-off and, if you

are lucky, the possibility for watching the trainings of the Polish and foreign ski

jumpers.

The attractiveness of the hill was also increased by the cooperation with

Nadwislanska Tourist Agency and creation of so called “Cienkowska Loop”

connecting the ski jumping hill with “Cienkow” chair lift. The route includes

an upward chair lift trip to the top of the ski jumping hill or by Cienków chair

lift to the top of Cienkow, a walk along Cieńkow ridge (circa 1.3 km) and a

downward chair lift trip on the ski jumping hill (or by Cienkow chair lift) as

well as a stroll along Malinka stream until the place of departure.

The summer hill record was set or equalized by Adam Malysz five times. The

last time in July 2010 when he reached the distance of 134.5 m. The summer

hill record was set 14 times. The current record-holder is Kamil Stoch who

reached 136 meters on 2nd August 2013 during FIS Ski Jumping Grand Prix.

In the winter conditions the first record was set by Kamil Stoch who jumped

132 meters during the Championships of Poland in February 2009. The same

jumper set another record in December 2011 when he obtained the distance of

136 m during the Championships of Poland. The current hill record-holder is

Stefan Kraft. During the last World Cup the Austrian made a jump of 139 m.

History of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup competitions in Wisla

In 2014/2015 season Wisla was allowed to organise the FIS Ski Jumping

World Cup competition third time in the history.

First World Cup competition on Adam Malysz's Hill in Wisla took place on 9th

January 2013. The winner of inaugural individual event was the Norwegian

Anders Bardal. The German representative Richard Freitag was second and the

teammate of Bardal - Rune Velta came third. The highest ranked Polish ski

jumper was Piotr Zyla who took 6th place.

In the first version of FIS Ski Jumping calendar for the 2013/2014 season

Wisla was not taken into account as place of organising the World Cup

competition. However, after FIS Congress in Zurich, the International Ski

Federation authorities decided to organise, apart from Zakopane, the World

Cup individual competiton on Adam Malysz's Hill. Some days before event,

the organisers has grappled with the adverse weather conditions and the lack of

snow in Beskids. That is why they had to transport snow from Tatras mountain.

Fortunately, the competition was carried out as planned. The best was German

representative Andreas Wellinger who won the World Cup competition first

time in his career. Kamil Stoch, who has jumped in front of home crowd, took

second place. Third was the Austrian Michael Hayböck.

FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Wisla was appreciated by the International Ski

Federation authorities and Wisla was allowed to organise the event also in

2014/2015 season. The winner of that competition was the Austrian Stefan

Kraft. The second stand was took by the Slovenian Peter Prevc. German ski

jumper Severin Freund came in third.

In the season 2015/2016 Wisla for the first time in the history was allowed to

organise two individual World Cup competitions. The event is planned for the

first March weekend (3rd- 5th March).

Adam Malysz – the patron of Ski Jumping Hill

in Wisla-Malinka

The construction of the new ski jumping hill in Wisla Malinka turned out to be

almost the national issue owing to “malyszomania” which spreaded across

Poland as a result of international success achieved by a ski jumper form Wisla

– Adam Malysz. Polish people loved the modest jumper representing Wisła

Ustronianka Sports Club. The success, including four Trophies of Crystal Balls

in Ski Jumping World Cup, silver and bronze Winter Olympic medal, the

victory in Four Hills Tournament not to mention many others, did not change

the priorities of “the Eagle from Wisla.” Malysz always emphasized he was

dreaming of a venue in his hometown Wisla which would be inseparable part

of the town tradition and would make the ski jumping world of the Beskid

Mountains more attractive. It seemed natural that the ski jumping hill was to be

named after him. However, it took a long time to convince the outstanding

Wisla’s citizen to agree. He finally did, concluding that nothing would

associate with him more than the hill itself.

Page 17: A Dear Sir or Madame,

A

17

Stefan Kraft – record holder of the hill

Stefan Kraft is this year winner of the 63rd Four Hills Tournament. He was

born on 13 May, 1993, in Schwarzach im Pongau in Austria. When he was four

he started his sports adventure with football. At the age of ten he took up to

skiing and at the same time he was representing SV Schwarzach Club. In

January, 2009, he made his debut in International FIS Cup competition. In

2010/2011 season he became a member of the Austrian team at The World

Junior Championships in Nordic Skiing in Otepaa, where he took two medals –

silver in individual and gold in team competitions. During the second part of

the season for the first time he took part in Continental Cup in Brotterode,

which brought him the first place.

During the next season he appeared in Continental Cup, as well. He, together

with the team, won the third place, and as individual skier was classified as

seventh at The World Junior Championships. In the season 2012/2013 he found

himself in Austrian A Team as the ski jumper. He took first place in the three

first Continental Cup tournaments: in Kazakh town Ałmaty and Swiss

Engelberg. He made his debut in World Cup on 6 January 2012 in

Bischofshofen and he scored his first points in Innsbruck a year later. It was

during the 62nd Four Hills Tournament in Bischofshofen, when he stood on the

podium for the first time, gaining the third place.

On 8 January 2014 during ski jumping qualifications in Wisła, Poland, he

achieved 139-meter jump, by which he established a new record of this hill. On

29 December, 2014, in Obersdorf, he gained the first victory in World Cup and

became the winner of the 63. Four Hills Tournament.

Page 18: A Dear Sir or Madame,

A

18

One year later he was among the medalist of World Championships in Falun –

he came in third in the individual competition at normal hill and won the silver

medal in the team competition.

This season Kraft has been still in a very good shape. In FIS Ski Flying World

Championships in Tauplitz he won the bronze medal both in the individual and

the team competition.

So far he has been standing on the World Cup podium nineteen times (he came

in first four times). He has achieved two World Cup victories in Poland – in

Wisla (2015) and in Zakopane (2016). Currently he is among the best in the

overall ranging – he has taken the 5th rank.
