You may have heard other people speak somewhat negatively about people who come to worship primarily two times a year...on Christmas and Easter.

But I am delighted that people choose these two occasions in the church year... these two times in the life of Christ….. to worship God.

Christmas and Easter....imagine! First, the day we remember, marvel and celebrate:

that God’s Love put skin on and came to live among us; to live as a human being....to walk with us in all the parts of our lives. We mark Christmas as the day of wonder and gratitude. In a world where the celebration of Christmas is directed away from this wonder and directed toward the wonder of gift-giving, I am grateful for people who come to give thanks, to marvel and to remember God’s gift of love to us in Christmas…Godwithus: Emmanuel!

Then, the celebration of Easter Sunday---the day we remember that death is not the end; the day we remember the empty tomb....the promise that nothing could keep Christ in that tomb, and that nothing...nothing…nothing can separate us from God’s love shown to us in the glory and gift of the risen Lord.

Easter, too, in the culture has increasingly come to mean things that began in celebration of the Resurrection and now take over the celebration.... candy, eggs, bunnies, new clothes and family gatherings. All good things, but in the absence of gathering to remember, rejoice and praise God for the gift of the Resurrection, these can become empty symbols.

The empty symbol that Easter worshippers hold up is the empty tomb, and I am grateful for the people who worship our Lord in Easter joy and hope. God is not limited---and is able to work in the hearts and lives of all people

even in only two services a year! God is able to equip God’s people for their whole lives through the promises of the incarnation and the resurrection.

So, as I said in similar words for Easter, can we let the good news of Christ be in our welcome and words these two services each year? For the good news is surely present and heard each and every time we gather!

Thanks be to God! Every blessing this month as we wait for the One who has already

come, and who has loved us for all time. ~Pastor Jan

Our Savior’s Lutheran Church -- Budget Report

OSLC Council Members:

Jerry Andersen Maria Bouche Lynda Jameson

Toby Karmark Dennis Karl Pr. Jan LaVake

Shelley Rasmussen Linda Tedlie Dan Williams

Jenny Williams

You matter in God’s work here at Our Savior’s. This year we distributed our Estimate of Giving cards during each Sunday worship service in October and the first weeks of November. You can still complete one and return it in the offering plate or mail it in; it’s not too late to do so. Estimates of giving help us better plan for our ministries, worship, and education.

Thank you for your lives lived in faith, and for all the ways that you make it possible for this community to do God’s work with our hands.

Every blessing,

The Stewardship Team of Our Savior’s Lutheran

We have a lot to discuss and plan for in our annual meeting. Please mark your calendars—we meet after worship on Sunday, January 26th.

As you are all aware – giving is currently not at a rate to meet our approved budgeted

spending. We are going into a very busy and demanding schedule the last two

months of the year. Please pray and dig deep to see how you can help with our

deficit. I would also ask that you prayerfully start thinking about your giving for next

year. As I put the 2020 budget together, I am doing a lot of praying asking God to

guide our hearts to give to the glory of his name. Thanks, Shelley Rasmussen

YOUR OUTREACH TEAM: Debbie Kamark, Bob Kolinski, Ron Kuehl, Pastor Jan LaVake, Karen Marone, Jenny Williams

Deb, Bob, Karen, Jenny, Pastor Jan and Ron pray you have a Holy, Blessed,

Peace-filled and Joyous Christmas season.

We serve as an advocacy and awareness building team. What is advocacy?

It is to become aware of people's struggles and the root causes of those problems; educating ourselves and

others and then strategizing for solutions; which includes writing letters [e-mails] calling, visiting and

connecting with other groups to help resolve problems.

ADVOCACY is Influence of our FAITH; OUR VALUES; OUR GENEROSITY; OUR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER;

COMPASSION; JUSTICE; HUMAN DIGNITY

We are an action team "our faith is not a couch potato faith". As Luther said "sin is focusing on ourselves"

We are definitely a work in progress. It takes a lot of prayer, study, discussion and putting "rubber to the road"

PEACE not WALLS is an organization supported by the ELCA to help find a peaceful solution between Palestine

and Israel. There are Christians in Palestine and Israel. I encourage you to look at the Peace not Walls web site

https://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Publicly-Engaged-Church/Peace-Not-Walls. A study group from our synod [including

our Bishop Gerald Mansholt] will be traveling to Israel and Palestine in March to get a first-hand look at the

situation and to meet with representatives from each country. We look forward to their report and insights

when they return. Pray for their mission trip.

In this time of much anxiety, anger and fear in our political environment, I discovered a book entitled

“I THINK YOU'RE WRONG [but I'M LISTENING]”. It is written by two Christian women who are on opposite sides

of the political spectrum but are friends. They decided they needed a way to talk about their disagreements in

meaningful, helpful ways. They believe that the church can be an example of how to love the other and come

to understand each other when discussing political issues. They provide a good road map to follow. They

believe there is a better way. They don't believe we shouldn't be able talk about religion or politics with our

family or friend who think or believe differently than us. They are two of the most important topics as Christians

and essential to come up with the best solutions going forward. No one side has all the best solutions.

So in this season of PEACE on EARTH GOODWILL toward ALL PEOPLES- let us continue to pray and work for

peace, eliminating poverty, oppression and injustice in our community and throughout the world.

GO FORWARD WITH FAITH, LOVE and MUCH COURAGE--Ron Kuehl

“GIVING IS THE REASON FOR LIVING”

For the next several months, your Stewardship team would like you to consider the 7 most often given reasons why a person gives to their church community. Last month, we named the #1 reason people give to their faith community: Gratitude for all the blessings God has given us. At the end of the following paragraph(s), reflect on your own connection to this reason #2:

Giving adds meaning to life. There is nothing bad about feeling good, especially when the good feeling accompanies acts that follow the example of Christ. Giving adds meaning to our lives. Giving is one of the primary joys of living. In Victor Hugo’s great novel, Les Miserables, the main character, Jean Valjean is befriended and given lodging by a bishop. Jean then returns this kindness by stealing the bishop’s candlesticks. The police bring Jean back to the bishop’s home for questioning, and when it appears that Jean is headed for jail, the bishop offers a plausible reason for the missing candlesticks. Jean is amazed. When the two are alone, Jean asks, “Why did you do that? You know I’m guilty.” The bishop relies, “Life is for giving.” Giving to God is an exercise in spiritual growth. We encourage everyone to thoughtfully consider if they give because Giving is a primary joy of life..that “life is for giving”. STEPHEN MINISTRY You may be experiencing any number of difficulties that are causing pain or sadness. If so – you may find a Stephen Minister helpful. We will meet with you for 1 hour a week to listen and care.

Stephen Ministry is a confidential one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Ministry Series system.

Stephen Ministry congregations equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting.

The AFTER People…… ▪ After the phone call you hoped you’d never get ▪ After the funeral when everyone has left ▪ After the relationship falls apart ▪ After the doctor says “I’m sorry” ▪ After the nursing home director says “welcome to your new home” ▪ After the last child waves and drives away ▪ After the gavel comes down and handcuffs go on ▪ After the baby arrives demanding more than possible ▪ After you find the pink slip in your final paycheck ▪ After your family and friends have heard your story too many times

We are having another training class this Fall! If you would like a Stephen Minister or would like to become a Stephen Minister Contact Pastor Jan or Linda Tedlie at 920-410-0745 / [email protected] Please don’t hesitate to call with any questions!

Some very good news and good advice….We've been praying for Jodi Ambrose who has breast cancer. Recently she's been declared cancer free!

She would like to share this with all of you:

I would like to thank everyone in the congregation for all their thoughts and prayers. Prayer goes a long way and it certainly has for me. It was such a relief when they told me I was cancer free. It lifted a weight off my shoulders. One thing I did was I took advantage of the program they offer at the YMCA as soon as my treatments were over. It helped me get my strength back. It’s a three-month program for cancer survivors and a friend to support them. They offer it for FREE to any cancer patients. It’s wonderful. It’s called “Live Strong”. It is a class that meets every Tuesday and Thursday for 1 1/2 hours. They work you really hard the entire time and you feel the difference in a short amount of time. I will now be joining the YMCA (unfortunately I do not have Silver Sneakers) and continue on with the “Stay Strong Program”. This class is 45 minutes long. You may use the Y as many times as you want within those 3 months. I try to get there 3X per week if I can. You are allowed any classes they offer to use. Swim classes, yoga, boxing room, band machines, weight machines, cardio machines, examples, stationery bike, recumbent bikes, and tread mill to mention a few. They work on your balance which is something we all lose as we get older. It is well worth it for any cancer survivor to participate in. You work at your own pace. Everyone is different and the best part is you make wonderful friends who have gone through similar experiences as you have. Everyone supports each other. Please pass this on to the congregation in case there are others struggling with cancer. Some of these people had cancer over a year ago or longer and have joined. Like I said, it’s free to cancer survivors so why not take advantage of it? As most know, if you have Silver Sneakers, the YMCA is free to come and work out. All classes are free also. If you haven’t used the facilities, it’s worth trying. You have nothing to lose but a lot to gain. Thank you again for all your support; it meant so much to me knowing you were all there for me. Jodi Ambrose

*What is this ‘Blue Christmas’ Service?

The twinkling lights and merry songs of Christmas can, in cruel contrast, deepen the darkness and gloom

felt by those who are struggling. For this reason, we offer a special time of worship during the Advent

season to offer comfort, healing, and hope. Usually called the Blue Christmas service, the service is held

close to Christmas, when the winter solstice of December 21 makes the days shorter and darker than at

any other time of the year. It is a service of hope and healing.

The service includes readings that give voice to our feelings of pain, loss, and the hope we cling to in

the midst of despair. You will have the opportunity to light candles of remembrance. Advent hymns and

soft candlelight gives a sense of abiding faith and the persistent light of Christ in the darkest areas of our

lives.
