A Champion Retired

With the decision being made to retire him to stud, Palentino leaves behind a collection of amazing memories spread throughout his 18 start career. Breaking his maiden back in 2015 at his second start, he then went to Flemington to score his first Black type success in the Listed Hilton Stakes. From there, Palentino or ‘Dazza’ stepped out a further 15 times, all at Group and Listed Level. His first Group 1 success in the $750,000 Australian Guineas was special before he again proved to us all how good he was over a mile at Flemington when he won his second Group1 race in the $500,000 Makybe Diva Stakes. His most recent win came on March 18th when he won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington. Settling in a beautiful position behind the speed with Mark Zahra in the saddle, he peeled off their backs at the top of the straight and went on for a dashing 3.25 length victory – his biggest ever winning margin. Congratulations to his owners on what has been outstanding career and we wish all the best in his new career at Sun Stud. 18 starts: 5 wins, 3 seconds and over $1.3 million in prizemoney… Go DAZZA!

2012 2017

Another Big Day for Big Duke

After winning won the Group 3 $200,000 Launceston Cup in fine style, Big Duke returned to the beach stables and his next target was set for the Group 3 Manion Cup at Rosehill. Having done everything asked of him in the weeks leading up to the race, he made the journey to New South Wales where we expected another bold showing. Jumping from gate 6 with Craig Williams in the saddle, he settled into a nice rhythm back off the speed. Travelling well into the straight, he peeled out wide and in a two horse war with Our Century, the pair dug in and fought hard through the heavy going. Big Duke was nabbed on the line, however Craig was quick to fire in a protest and the stewards elected to rightfully reverse the result - adding a second Black Type victory in as many starts to Big Duke’s name, as well as the team’s first winner in Sydney. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Renew Salutes at Jumping Debut

Jumps racing is back! And Renew, our first starter for the year made his presence felt, putting on a

dominant display to break his Maiden in his hurdle debut. Renew certainly showed his love for the game

when he stepped out at Warrnambool following some moderate performances on the flat. He had

been trialling well over the obstacles heading into his debut and with Johnny Allen on board he settled into

a nice rhythm midfield. Jumping safely throughout behind a hot speed, he started to improve along the back straight and was just a length off the leader jumping the last. Despite being bumped heavily as he entered the straight, he

balanced up and went on to thrash his rivals by a comfortable ten lengths. Congratulations to OTI and

let’s hope for some more success as the jumping season heats up!

IMPORTANT – To all owners

We remind all owners that our Training Services Agreement applies to all horses, or shares in horses,

the Training Services Agreement and the TOR regulations the TOR regulations will apply.

Handsome Thief goes Back-to-Back

Following a debut victory at Moonee Valley back in January, Handsome Thief showed his love for the Valley this month with back to back wins. He saluted by 3.5 lengths in the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1200m before backing up 9 days later with another comfortable win in the Benchmark 70 Handicap again over 1200m. Rolling forward settling just outside the leader he travelled well into the straight and with a good turn of foot he had a length to spare over his nearest rival. The four year old looks like quite an exciting prospect for Waratah Thoroughbreds with his form reading as four starts for three wins and a narrow second – all at Metropolitan level.

Edenhope Cup

Lips Areios proved too good in the feature event when taking out the $30,000 Edenhope Cup over 2000m. It was his third win over the staying trip since joining the stable last year when he made

the journey down from Kris Lees yard in New South Wales. Having finished just over a length from the winner on his first up assignment, Lips Areios went into the Cup as odds on favourite

and definitely didn’t let his admirers down with a strong on pace performance to claim the race

easily.

Tough Victory for Artie

Following handy first and second up performances Artie Dee Two headed to Moonee Valley ready to show everyone what he is truly made of. Despite being caught three wide without any cover for the majority of the $100,000 event, he started to improve around the field midway through the 1200m trip. Travelling strongly into the straight, he showed a fighting turn of foot and proved far too good for the other three year olds. It was great to see him back in the winners stall and his love for the Valley really shone through. With another win to his name let’s hope Artie can continue on with his winning ways!

Australian Cup!

During his first preparation for the stable Humidor certainly showed he was full of potential leading into the Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Cup following narrow second placed finishes in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup

and the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes. Stepping out to 2000m and with Damian Lane on board, he was right on target for his first Group 1 assault for his new group of owners. Drifting back from barrier 7 he settled

down off mid field with cover, before he was angled into the clear early in the straight and showed a magnificent turn of foot to reel in the leaders to claim his first Australian victory.

Following another honest second in the Group 1 ‘The BMW’, Humidor has been sent for a well-earned break before getting the chance to have a crack at some “Spring Riches” later in the year.

Congratulations to everyone involved, it looks like it will be an exciting few months ahead!
