From the desk of Mr. Wieters

Dear St. Francis de Sales School Parents, Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders recently competed in their very own version of the Winter Olympics. Our students were divided into six countries that they came up with names for. The countries were: Disco Land, The Erupting Icicles, Golden Tacolandia, Koo Koo Wacha, Monkey Island and Swagopilous. The opening ceremonies for our Olympics included a Parade of Nations, the running of the Olympic torch, and a recitation of the Olympic oath. Then the games began. Students competed in the biathlon, curling, hockey, the luge, the skeleton and the ski jump. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, medals were awarded and the Olympic flame was extinguished. This great day would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Dan von Rabenau, Jenni Sullivan, Karen Gonzales, Anne Madison, Sunni Szumanski, Sharis Habura, Brent Amann, Mary Jo Pankau, Dianne Fasano, Lola Bearder, Tina Ricci and Heather Westphal! Thanks also to the preparation and hard work of our Olympic organizers Linda Dickman, Margot Hayes and Teresa Kiefer. It was truly a gold-medal event! Our St. Francis de Sales Parish School 2nd Grade Class recently wrote letters to residents of The Golden Years Retirement Village and Assisted Living Center in Walworth. Two 2nd Graders, Chase Welch and Brady Wilkins, were actually able to hand-deliver the letters to residents of the community last Friday. The Golden Years residents, as well as directors of the home, were extremely appreciative of our students efforts. Congratulations to Calie Eck for encouraging our students writing efforts and coming up with this inspiring assignment!

Our Winter Olympic Volunteers! (All gold-medal winners!)

St. Francis de Sales Parish School is now accepting application admissions for students enrolling in 3 Year Old Kindergarten through 8th Grade for the 2014 - 2015 school year. There will be a 3K, 4K and Kindergarten Open House on Thursday, March 13th from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. Screening for the upcoming school year for those three grade levels will take place in May or by appointment. Children will be evaluated in the areas of readiness, motor skills, vision, hearing and speech. For more information or to schedule a screening appointment, please call the school at 248-2778. If you have friends, relatives or neighbors with children entering 3K, 4K or Kindergarten next year, please let them know! A number of our classes are or will be at capacity for the 2014-15 school year. We currently have 6 students enrolled for next year's 3K Class. The class size is going to be limited to 10 students next year. In order to ensure your child's continued enrollment at St. Francis de Sales Parish School, please return a completed admission form along with a $100 registration fee to save a seat for your child. The $100 registration fee is non-refundable, but will be applied to your 2014-2015 tuition. Copies of the admission form are available in the office or online. If a specific grade level reaches capacity and we do not have your admission form and fee on file, your child will be placed on a waiting list to enroll for that specific grade level. We will be having our annual Casino Night Fundraiser Saturday, April 12th at the Baker House & Bella Vista Suites. Mark your calendars now as you don't want to miss this. Casino Night is one of the main attractions of the school year and our Home and School Associations biggest fundraiser. It features dinner and casino style gaming. There are silent and live auctions, with many great items available to bid on. In the upcoming weeks, we will be sending you more information regarding Casino Night. The success of events like this depends on you! We need volunteers to help plan for and run this event. All money raised from Casino Night benefits your children! Among the many items purchased for the school over the years by our Home and School include ancillary teaching materials, computers, network server, our security system and cameras, playground equipment as well as sponsoring class field trips and teacher attendance at workshops and seminars. We would not be the school we are without the dedication and support we have received from our Home and School Association over the years! If you would like to help, there will be a Casino Night Meeting on Monday, March 10th at 6:30 pm in the Jonah Room. All parents are encouraged to attend. As an attended incentive, all parents that attend the meeting will earn a CASUAL DRESS DAY for their children on March 11th. "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ (Theodor Geisel’s) birthday on March 2nd than reading to your child? We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday with Seuss inspired lessons throughout next week! David Wieters Principal

Almost Spring! – March 2014

During February we continued practicing our school wide PBIS responses to our rules. In addition, we learned a problem solving method to add to our collection of skills. Problem solving is used when we have a disagreement with someone. A communication skill with problem solving is paraphrasing. It’s very useful to understand the viewpoint of the other person when trying to solve a problem. The steps for problem solving are easy – identify the problem (use paraphrasing to show the other person you understand what they are saying!), brainstorm a solution, evaluate the ideas, choose one, and do it! An additional term used with older

children is that we work for a win-win solution. You can reinforce this skill at home by finding opportunities to help siblings settle arguments, roleplaying situations that come up with friends, or when you and your child disagree about something. We are problem solvers! This tool can de-escalate a conflict, and lead to closer relationships.

The first week of March we are celebrating the birthday of Theodore Seuss Geisel – Dr. Seuss! In Guidance classes, we will use his wonderful book, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”, as a spring board for career education. Grades K-2 will talk mostly about

what they want to be when they grow up, and will learn about specific careers during our career fair next month. Grades 3-5 will learn in general about pathways to certain occupations. Grades 6 and 7 are beginning to work on the WisCareers website to learn about career clusters, and occupations that may fit their personal skills, interests, and abilities. Some of this online work may be completed as homework. Seventh grade will have 2 projects to complete. They will need your help to complete their family tree of occupations! Eighth grade will continue to work in the WisCareers curriculum, and will be helping with the Career Fair as well.

Our Career Fair has been rescheduled to Wed., April 23, 2014, 12:30-2:30. Come share yours with us! We need about 8 more occupations for students to learn about from adults. Students will rotate to different stations, so you may be speaking to students up to 6 times. It is important that presenters complete a form, and I need at least 1-2 weeks in advance of the event to put all the pieces together. Look for the forms in school newsletters or by emailing me for one. Please consider sharing your occupation with our students. Our 7th and 8th

Career Fair and Parent Information Series grade students will be

preparing presentations and posters about careers and career clusters as well for our younger students to learn about a wide range of occupations. The next topic for our Parent Information Series will be a discussion about respect. Watch for the date in future class and school newsletters. This is a hot topic among parents. Please come and share your thoughts and experiences about how to model/teach respect in your home.

Parenting tip of the month: When your child is angry with you, instead of reacting to his/her anger, try acknowledging the emotion, and paraphrasing what they have said, “You’re really angry right now. What I heard you say is…..”. Then let them talk some more. Sometimes (not all the time) that is enough to diffuse some of the emotion so your child can be calmer and give you more information so that you can resolve the issue together.

Dear SFDS Parents:

For more than 38 years, Labels for Education has been awarding free educational equipment to schools in exchange for proofs of purchase from the Campbell family of brands. It’s a fun, easy program where students, families and members of the community work together for a common goal. Today, over 60,000 schools and organizations are registered with Labels for Education, benefiting more than 42 million students. Over the years, Campbell's has been able to provide more than $114 million in merchandise to America's schools!

The time for our first St. Francis de Sales Parish School collection of Campbell's Labels for Education is drawing near. As you may have seen in the school newsletter, I am the new coordinator for the Labels for Education program. After talking with Mr. Wieters, I was able to secure an out of dress code pass for any children donating 25 labels (not points on labels) or $2.50 on the same day as our Box Tops for Education out of dress code day. The part of the label that is needed is the barcode and the point value that is right next to it. If there is no point value on the label, just the barcode will be fine. The labels will go toward buying much needed supplies for the school. I have already been able to use some points that we had banked to purchase art supplies that were needed. If you wish to make a monetary donation, the money will be given to Mrs. Pankau to help support our school library. This is a great opportunity to help out our school by using items you may already have in your pantry.

Thank you in advance for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Renee M. Howell Campbell's Labels for Education Coordinator

Scholastic Chess Tournament Questions & Answers Here are some answers to some commonly asked questions from first-time tournament goers. Q1: Do students just play someone in their same grade? A1: There are usually three sections (levels) of play such as K-3, K-6, and K-12. Students in grades K(indergarten) through 3rd grade will play in the K-3 section. Students in grades 4 through 6 will play in the K-6 section. Students in grades 7-12 along with students in any grade that want to play against the toughest and oldest competition will play in the K-12 section. Q2: How does the team concept work? A2: This is a team and individual event. A team may have as many players as desired, but only the top four scores count for team results and tie breaks. A team must have at least two players in a section to be eligible for team awards in that section. Students do not have to come as a member of a team. All are welcome! Q3: Does a team have to be all of the same grade level, like a team of 3rd graders playing against other 3rd graders? A3: Per Q2, a team must consist of at least two players in the same section. Q4: What will the day be like? A4: The tournament will consist of 5 or 6 games of chess (called rounds) during the day. All students play in all rounds – it is not an elimination type tournament. The first round will start no later than 9:30 am and the last round should be completed no later than 4 pm. For each round, a listing of players in each section will be posted. This listing is called a pairing; it lists all players and their board number and whether they are white or black. Students find their board and wait until the Tournament Director (TD) says to begin. As soon as a student is done playing, they reset their board and report the results to a scorer’s table. They then leave the tournament room and go to the “skittles” room. The skittles room is the room where players and their families/coaches “hang out” between the games. As soon as all the games of the round are completed, the scores are entered into a computer and the new pairings are posted, and the next round begins. This will continue until 5 or 6 rounds are completed. Then final scores are tabulated and the awards are presented. Trophies will usually be given out to the top five scores in each section and for the top three teams. Q5: What do we do about lunch? Is there a break? A5: There is no break as players eat between games in the skittles room. Many tournament hosts have food for sale. Some, like the All-Catholic tournament, will not. There will be food for sale at restaurants just across the street. Q6: Can parents and other watch the games? A6: Most tournaments do not allow this because of the rare incidences of coaches or parents trying to communicate with their players (winks, coughing, etc.). Some, like the All-Catholic tournament, allow spectators to watch the games from chairs located around the outer edge of the playing room. If anything improper happens, we’ll have to ask all spectators to leave the tournament room. Q7: What if two players have the same score at the end of the tournament? A7: Most tournaments end with many players having the same scores. Individual ties for final position will be broken by well-accepted chess tiebreakers. In some WSCF tournaments, especially those with a scholarship being awarded, a tiebreak playoff may be played after the last round. Q8: Do we need to bring boards or pieces? What about a chess clock? A8: The tournament will supply all boards and pieces for the tournament games. It is recommended that you bring your own board and set for use in the skittles room to use before the tournament starts to “warm up” and to review your games between rounds. If you want to use a chess clock, you can bring one and your opponent will have to use it. Games usually can only last one hour; if a game is very slow, a clock will be placed on the board. The first player out of time will lose the game if a checkmate or draw hasn’t been achieved before that happens.
