H ave you ever asked yourself the hard question: will I be pre-pared to defend my-

self in the event I am ever physically attacked? It’s a situ-ation that no one likes to think about, but should not be a situ-ation that is ignored in prepar-ing for. You can take basic steps to prevent and/or deter a physical attack: walking in well-lit areas at night, not walking alone, utilizing UTSAPD’s Safe-ty Escort program, or even downloading a safety app on your smartphone. Even if you try to do everything to remove the opportunity for a physical attack, it can still occur and that’s where self-defense train-

ing comes into play.

Self-defense classes typically teach defense basics and prin-ciples that are simple enough

to remember and practice easi-ly, while still being effective if ever needed. But anyone who has trained in any kind of phys-ical defensive tac-maneuvers (whether self-defense, martial arts, or hand-to-hand combat) will tell you that you must train regularly if you expect your training to be fully effective. UTSA students have had many options availa-ble to them for self-defense over the years, including a class put on by the police de-partment. When UTSAPD looked at possibly revamping or changing our self-defense class, we wanted to explore op-tions that would provide the options that would give the participants quality instruction, with the ability to continue

their training.

We are happy to announce that

the police department has partnered with the UTSA Club Jiu-Jitsu to offer a new Self-Defense Seminar. This train-ing seminar will teach the par-ticipants basic self-defense skills needed to help survive and get out of a physical at-tack. The training is open to all students, faculty, and staff (essentially anyone affiliated with UTSA) and will be held at the UTSA Recreation Center – Mac Gym on November 9 from 6-8PM. The class will be taught by the Jiu-Jitsu instruc-tors and the PD will be there to give safety tips and answer

any questions.

The great thing about this part-nership, as noted previously, is that it offers the ability to continue the training. In our previous self-defense class, we were not able to offer any further training to reinforce the basics and expand on the moves. By partnering with Club Jiu-Jitsu, we now have given the community a re-source to join if they enjoy the training and want to practice it, learn more moves, and get bet-ter at this craft. It gives the

community an opportunity to connect with others as well and learn more about Jiu-Jitsu. Be sure to come by the Rec Center for the training. The training will work for eve-ryone! If you have any ques-tions, you can contact the UTSA Police Department’s Community Affairs Section at

[email protected].

Chief Lewis continued the momentum of engaging with the com-

munity by establishing a Police Advisory Committee. The com-

mittee is comprised of key stakeholders and members of the

community (current faculty, staff, & students) who will come to-

gether to meet with the Chief on a regular basis throughout the

year. They have established the following vision: We envision a

safe community environment made possible by a strong, positive,

and trusting relationship between the community-at-large and the

University of Texas at San Antonio Police Department. We recog-

nize the effective delivery of public safety services requires the

police partnering together with its citizens and university depart-

ments to en-

sure the

safety of all

its resi-

dents, stu-

dents, facul-

ty, staff and

those visit-

ing UTSA

campuses.

The goal of the Police Advisory Committee is to engage the com-

munity & allow them to take an active role is advising the police

department on current issues & give feed-back on the communi-

ties’ concerns. It is an excellent opportunity for the community to

bring forth their ideas in regards to programs and services as they

relate to law enforcement. For more information on the Police

Advisory Committee, please email: [email protected]
