Unit7

The Eden Project is a giant interactive park in Cornwall, in the Southwest of England, 270 km

from

London. Opened in March 2001, the Eden Project is entertaining and educational. It combines

science, technology and art and is a fabulous place to find answers to all your questions abou

t

plants and the interdependence between plants and people.

The Eden Project has 100,000 plants representing 5,000 species from the different climatic zone

s of

the world. The plants grow in two gigantic greenhouses.

• The Humid Tropics Biome, the world’s largest

greenhouse, is home to rainforest plants:

bananas, rubber, cocoa, teak and mahogany.

The biomes are made of ETFE, a strong, recyclable material which is transparent to UV light an

d not

degraded by sunlight.

The Eden Project helps us to understand and to celebrate the world we live in, and will inspir

e you

into action. Last year it had two million visitors. Visits to the park take about four hours,

although most people want to go back again to see it all more slowly.

• The Warm Temperate Biome is full of plants

from the Mediterranean, South Africa and

California.
