Members & guests, please complete your attendance inside the red friendship pad, and pass it down to the end of the pew. Please place your attendance slip in the offering plate.

CHIMING OF THE HOUR The sounding of the three chimes symbolizes the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. CALL TO WORSHIP Prepare Ye from Godspell by Stephen Schwartz Avery Berry, Tenor *HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 203 Hail to the Lord’s Anointed ELLACOMBE

Stanzas 1, 2, 4 Hail to the Lord's Anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free; to take away transgression, and rule in equity. He comes with succor speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in his sight. To him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand forever; that name to us is love.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE Dr. Ken Dunivant

ANTHEM All Good Gifts from Godspell by Stephen Schwartz Craig First, Tenor

PASTORAL PRAYER Dr. Ken Dunivant

*OFFERTORY HYMN NO. 399 Take My Life, and Let It Be MESSIAH Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee. Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love. Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love, my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store. Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

*OFFERTORY PRAYER 9 AM-Leigh Snodsmith 11 AM-Kate Gates OFFERING OUR GIFTS TO GOD Please give the attendance slips to the usher as the offering is received.

OFFERTORY The Prayer of St. Francis arr. René Clausen

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is injury, help me to pardon. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith. Where there is despair, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let me bring light, where there is sorrow, let me bring joy. O Lord, master divine, grant that I not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, and it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. For in dying, we are born to eternal life. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Amen.

*DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

T he play was written by John-Michael Tebelek as his Master’s Thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University. It was performed on

campus in 1970 using hymns from the Epis-copal Hymnal as the music. In 1971, Stephen Schwartz wrote the musical score of fifteen songs with many of them in-spired by an old Germanic Hymnal. Using

various musical styles including Rock n’ Roll, Pop, R & B, Ragtime and Rap, Godspell opened off Broadway in May of 1971. Over 2,000 per-formances later, the show moved to Broadway in 1976. For over 40 years, Godspell has been performed all over the world. Godspell certainly broke new ground in the 70’s with its stage treatment of Jesus Christ and a small group of followers dressed as clowns impro-vising through story and song, the parables of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. The musical begins with nine of the ten members of the cast entering the stage and taking the roles of the greatest philosophers of the ages, Socra-tes, Luther, Nietzhe, etc. They chant fragments of their teachings as they begin to sing “The Tower of Babble.” Their singing is interrupted by blasts from a shofur blown by John the Baptist as he beckons them to “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord!” John proceeds to baptize the company. Jesus comes to be baptized too. John asks to be baptized by Him, but Jesus says his place is not to baptize but to “Save the People.” In the first parable, Jesus explains that he has not come to abolish the law but to complete it so that we may live in His love “Day by Day!” In the cast, Jesus is the main character and does most of the teaching. Then one person plays both John and Judas. The other eight cast mem-bers use their own names and develop their characters as they go. After all the play is not just about Jesus but more about how his life and love affect us all – “All Good Gifts.” In the second act, Jesus begins to prepare his followers for his death. Parables about judgment and eternal life are explored. In the beautiful Upper Room scene Jesus tells them that he will be betrayed by someone close to him. As he breaks the bread and shares the wine he tells his fol-lowers that they will dine together in the Kingdom of Heaven. The band sings “On the Willows” which is about what has been sacrificed. In this song Jesus says good-bye to his followers and he asks that they wait while he goes to pray. The musical ends with the crucifixion of Jesus. The “Finale” begins loud and in B-minor with Jesus crying “O God I’m Dying.” Jesus dies and the music comes to an end. Then the women sing “Long Live God” and the men join in with “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord” in counterpoint as the casts exits.
