Ø70% of Filipinos depend on agriculture
Ø Farming creates and helps maintain habitat for various species
But…
Farming can disrupt the ways of nature.
It can also adversely impact on the environment through improper agricultural practices and land use.
•2
The challenge:
How to strike a balance between agricultural production and protection of the environment.
Ecological,
agri-based village
A call to heroism & bayanihanto lift the Philippines out of the third world!
•3
But if we must care for the poor, we must know them first. We have…
• Urban poor
• Rural poor
• Indigenous poor
Each type faces a different set of challenges…

But by helping them, we also ensure our sustainability.
Who are the IPs?
•5
IPs or INDIGENOUS PEOPLES:
Filipinos who have continuously lived as organized communities in defined territories (ancestral domains) since time immemorial & who have retained some or all of their own social, economic, cultural & political institutions.
• Total IP Population 11.8 M
- Luzon 36.10%
- Visayas 3.06%
- Mindanao 60.84%
• IPs: 17 % of national population
• No. of Ethnolinguistic Groups - 110
• Area of IPs’ Ancestral Domain: 5.4 M has.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES RIGHTSACT (IPRA)
now grants IPs their basic rights.
IPsIPs have 4 BASIC RIGHTS have 4 BASIC RIGHTS (per IPRA Sec. 7(per IPRA Sec. 7--37)37)
ü Rights to Ancestral Domains & Lands
ü Rights to Self-Governance & Empowerment
ü Rights to Social Justice & Human Rights
ü Rights to Cultural Integrity

But without basic things in life & livelihood opportunities, rights do not go far.
IPs often live in mountainous areas that are difficult to access & are vulnerable to natural disasters.
We have, thus, decided to care for them…the IPs, through…

…the
Kalinga IP Program.
