Energy Efficient Light Bulbs: Bulbs which are energyefficient, halogen or LED which have the advantage ofmaximising light output and minimising energy lost toheat.

How We Specified • All lights had to meet all relevant safety regulations

including European Safety Standard EN60432

• Energy efficient lamps had to have an endorsementsuch as energy saving recommended (EST) and/orEnergy Rating A

• Energy efficient lamps had to have a life rating of atleast 8000 hours

• LED lights had to have a life rating of at least 30,000hours.

How Green are Energy efficient lights and lamps?Traditional bulbs waste a lot of their energy by turning itinto heat. This is a problem because in a typical homelighting accounts for 10% to 15% of the total electricitybill. As a purchaser it is worth looking at the claims madeby manufacturers about the life of their bulbs and lamps. They can last up to 12 times longer than a conventional bulb.

Description and Pricing Descriptions are given to distinguish between energy efficient lamps, halogen lamps, and LED lights.

Costings are per unit, and per 10 and 100 units.

SALE GRAMMAR SCHOOL IMPROVES LEARNINGENVIRONMENT AND COUNTERACTS VANDALISM.

An innovative approach to optimising natural lighting is simultaneously improving the internal learning environment, minimising consumption

and counteracting risk of vandalism at Sale Grammar School.

The school which achieved specialist school status in the Visual Arts in September2003, wanted to extend and improve facilities in line with its new status.

The solution was the construction of a new single storey extension between theexisting school building and sports hall, providing a multi-media resource centre,3D and ceramics suite along with exhibition and display areas. The design of the

new building had to take into account that it needed to blend in with the existing buildings, and overcome a lack of daylight due to one elevation

being in close proximity to the Sports Hall.

Architectural Project Officer John Ramsbottom, of The Built Environment specialist architectural services within Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council,

proposed the use of 12 strategically located Sunscoop tubular rooflights from Glidevale Ltd.

“The Sunscoops are a huge success. Natural light is so much better thanfluorescent light, not only for the students to work in, but to show off theart work,” said the school’s Business Manager and project co-ordinator Mrs

Jeanette Buonocori. “The architect had the idea, because of concerns from staff that users would have to rely heavily on artificial lighting.

Sunscoops solve that problem, and bring a huge amount of natural light into the whole facility”.

ADOPTING NATURAL APPROACH TO SCHOOL LIGHTING DESIGNA new village school, which was commended by CABE (Commission for Architectureand the Built Environment) for its “coherent and well considered design” is achievingits objective to provide a “well lit and comfortable” learning environment - in partwith help from Glidevale Ltd.Kidderminster based Howl Associates was commissioned by Cradley C of E PrimarySchool in Worcestershire to design a new five classroom school to replace the oldschool buildings dating back to 1865.A specific element of the brief was to maximise natural daylight within, while Howl’sown aim was to include features that would stimulate the education of the children andmaximise the sustainability of the architecture. When the design was submitted to localplanners, it was referred to CABE and the design was “commended for its coherentand well considered design”.The solution for meeting the natural daylight element was the inclusion of in-plane rooflightsin the classrooms, and 16 x Glidevale Sunscoop tubular rooflights colour matchedto the zinc roof above the long, curving corridor which runs the length of the building.Philip Howl of Howl Associates elaborated, “We wanted to maximise natural daylightthroughout the school, but had a service void above the corridor so couldn’t useconventional in plane rooflights. Sunscoop gave us a cost-effective solution, and its simple hemispherical form fromthe outside on the roof was aesthetically pleasing against competitors’ products. We specified inclusion of a Skyview lens in the ceiling diffuser to give us additional spread of light and provide aninteresting appearance. The Sunscoops have been amazingly effective in lighting what would otherwise have been avery dark part of the school.”

Sunscoop™ Tubular RooflightsTubular rooflights consist of a clear roof-mountedpolycarbonate dome connected to a tube withan internal mirrored finish providing optimumspecular reflectance. Natural daylight enters thedome and is reflected down the tube and intothe room through a ceiling-mounted diffuser.

Tubular rooflights allow natural daylight to be utilisedwhere normal windows or rooflights cannot beused and are ideal for hallways, bathrooms, kitchens and corridors. The highly reflective aluminium tube is coated with a high-performancespecular reflective, silver mirror-like film giving 98%reflectivity. Tubular rooflights provide an effectiveand efficient means of maximising natural daylightin dark areas, virtually eliminating the need forsupplementary electric lighting during the dayoffering energy saving benefits.

Scientific studies have shown the positive benefitsof natural daylight in a range of applications. Forexample it can promote faster recovery of hospital patients and better performance byfactory workers and pupils in schools. Tubularrooflights are an innovative way of bringinghealth benefits wherever they are installed.

Tubular rooflights systems used as a complementto artificial lighting can considerably reduce the annual energy consumption of any building, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.

An investment in Glidevale Sunscoops is aninvestment in energy conservation which isnow of paramount importance to all specifiers.Estimations of annual energy and CO2 savingsattributable to the 3 different sizes of GlidevaleSunscoop Tubular Rooflights are detailed below.

These are based on:

• CIBSE daylight availability data over a yearfor a standard 8-hour working day

• simplifications of measured performance data • the energy otherwise consumed by conventional

incandescent (filament) light bulbs as I believethis is the normal basis for such estimations(for a basis instead of fluorescent bulbs thesavings are lower by a factor of approximately4.5 because of the greater efficiency of fluorescent bulbs)

• CO2 emission of 0.75 kg/kWh of electricity.

Ranges of values are given to reflect thedependence light pipe performance has onlength of pipe and the presence of bends etcwhich varies from one application to another.Annual savings per Glidevale Sunscoop TubularRooflight unit:

250 mm diameter – 100 - 230 kg CO2

350 mm diameter – 210 - 440 kg CO2

530 mm diameter – 540 - 1120 kg CO2For detailed information on Glidevale Sunscoop Tubular Rooflights visit:

How Green are Wooden Casement Windows? The timber for these windows is from well-managedforests, and has been certified to Forestry StewardshipCouncil or equivalent standard.

By using timber, the use of non-renewable materials islargely eliminated. In addition, high levels of insulation areprovided, thus reducing the use of fossil fuels whichresults from less efficient products. For those windowswhich are aluminium clad there is the added advantage ofreduced maintenance costs.

Description and Pricing Descriptions are given to distinguish windows producedpurely from timber, and those which are wooden, butwith aluminium cladding.

Units are costed individually.

Case Study Eco-refurbishmentEcoclad energy-efficient windows from Green Building Store chosenas part of Black Country Housing's Decent Homes upgrade As part of Black Country Housing's ongoing maintenance of its housing stock,a site condition survey revealed that existing timber windows at its homes inLotus Way , Rowley Regis in the West Midlands were in need of replacement. In particular, the U-value of the buildings needed to be improved in order tocomply with the new Decent Homes Standard. For a small housing association, Black Country Housing has a strong environmentalagenda. Two of its recent newbuild develop-ments in Dudley , West Midlands have hadimpressive environmental credentials.

Built on brownfield sites, the projects haveincluded four low environmental impacthomes, incorporating solar photovoltaic panels and water-heating, water recycling andcomposting toilets, as well as high levels ofinsulation and energy efficiency.

An ‘Eco-pod' training and demonstration centre is attached to the developmentwhich demonstrates a range of alternative construction techniques.

For environmental reasons (and also long-term maintenance issues) uPVC isnow generally avoided by Black Country Housing for refurbishment projects infavour of composite aluminium-clad timber windows. Ecoclad windows fromGreen Building Store, with their low glazing U-value of 1.1w/m 2k andScandinavian-sourced timber were chosen for the Lotus Way refurbishment, out of a number of companies, because of the quality of the product, price andthe after-sales service offered. The Lotus Way project involved replacement of90 windows in twenty of the housing association's homes.

Claire Hughes, Maintenance Consultant for Black Country Housing, has beenreally pleased with the windows, which are being specified for the next phaseof refurbishment. In the future Ecoclad doors may also be specified instead ofuPVC doors, which tend not to be very long-lasting. Green Building Store'swindow-fitting team installed the windows at Lotus Way and have beendescribed by Claire as “Excellent – on a par with the product itself! Thesite personnel built a good rapport with the tenants from the outset, have kept them well informed at all stages of the works which hasresulted in very few queries being directed to our offices.”

Peak Efficiency AIRFLUSHTM waterless urinals set the standardThe Peak District National Park, in conjunction with High Peak Borough Council, has installedAIRFLUSHTM waterless urinals in a new public convenience in Castleton, a picturesque town inthe heart of the Peak District. Two toilet blocks had to be replaced and Terry Redfern, specifierfor High Peak council, was keen to build on their reputation as a ‘green’ council by using the mostenergy and water-efficient products available. This was made possible with the use of the unique AIRFLUSHTM urinal system, designed by waterconservation specialists Elemental Solutions and supplied by Green Building Store, which is waterless and also avoids the use of expensive replacement cartridges. Unlike other urinals, theAIRFLUSHTM urinal uses a low-energy fan and has an ergonomically designed bowl that keeps theurinals clean and hygienic, making them an obvious choice for busy public conveniences. In addition to the nine AIRFLUSHTM urinals used in the project, other environmental featuresincluded the use of sun pipes, which allow more daylight in to the building, thereby saving energy used on electricity by maximising the natural light available.Since the refurbishment of the public convenience, the water usage has decreased from between5-6 units of water per day, to only 3 units per day, thereby virtually halving water consumption. In addition to the significant environmental benefits provided byAIRFLUSHTMurinals,Terry has also noticed that the toilet blocks have been completely odourlesssince the installation of the new urinals, making them a far more pleasant place to go!The use of AIRFLUSHTM urinals has been so successful that Terry is planning to specify them againfor a forthcoming project and would happily use them in other projects in the future.Specifier:Terry Redfern, High Peak Borough Council,Website: www.highpeak.gov.uk Supplier: Green Building Store,Tel: 01484 461705, www.greenbuildingstore.co.uk
