Speech therapist conducting individual sessions with STK trainees in the therapy room of new office premises

a. Background

There has been tremendous growth in quality of services, professional care as well as introduction of new streams such as home based services, referral services & vocational training for the STK children & adolescents after the ASHA for Education intervention since 2017. We have now increased number of students from 42 ( in 2016 and 58 in 2017) to 65. The average attendance of students through the year has been as high as 79%. The therapies are undertaken regularly, Physiotherapist & Speech therapists visit the centre daily, they have developed individual goal plans for each child and the gain is apparent in children. The centre has also started regular consultations with Psychotherapist who works on the mental abilities of each child and prescribes exercises and therapy sessions accordingly. This therapy has added a new dimension to the child’s progress and we now see children showing faster growth.

In April 2018, we moved to new office premises. After a long drawn search we finally found a place (on rent) which is perfect for the current needs of the Samerth urban Program.

a.6 Vocational Training

17 adolescents are involved in vocational training at STK. There are three major vocations currently – paper plate making ( manual and hydraulic machine), bead work and photo copy. The entire vocational training component of STK is supported by Gujarat CSR authority and Gruh Finance.

The focus in this period has been upgrading our vocational centre (shifting to new office space), up skilling ( intense beadwork training with Sahaj on new designs and products) and new partnerships with Tulip disposable solution manufacturing Pvt ltd for paper plate (where to buy good quality raw material, selling markets, new designs etc). The photocopier machine has been bought and we have recently started training our students in this skill.

Samerth has identified 32 severely mentally challenged children

The reason to organise the camps was to reach out to such children who have not been able to come and access such services and are left out. Also, this is to bring to the notice of the government authorities, and register them as special category of disability and also to enrol children of 6 to 14 years in schools.
