After breakfast, begin our day with avisit to Caesarea by the Sea, site of a flourishing early Christian community, where the ruinsof Turkish, Crusader and Roman Civilizations are still visible. Biblically, St. Paul wasimprisoned here before being sent to Rome for trial. It was here also that St. Peter baptizedthe first Gentiles. Visit includes the Theatre, newly excavated Palace, Hippodrome and theHarbor. Continue to Mt. Carmel (Vineyard of God) on the Mediterranean coast. Here thetriumph of Elijah over the pagan prophets of Baal took place (1 Kings 18). Independent lunch in Haifa. This afternoon, we will drive to the northern extremity of Haifa Bay to the ancient city ofAkko. In 1104, the Crusaders arrived here, changed the name of the city to Saint-Jean-d’Acreand built a fortress to defend it. It was also in this port that St. Francis of Assisi landed. Wewill sing the prayer attributed to St. Francis, as we hold the eve of ‘World Day of Peace.’New Year’s Eve Dinner and overnight at the Seasons Hotel in Netanya. (B,D)DDaayy 44 January 1, Sunday: Nazareth – Cana – Sepphoris – Sea of GalileeTheme: The Annunciation: ...The Word became flesh...(John 1:14).Happy New Year! Buffet breakfast at hotel. After breakfast, we leave Netanya to Nazareth, the village in which Jesus grew up and lived most of his life. Visit Joseph’s workshop andexplore the magnificent Basilica of the Annunciation, Mary’s Well, and the Church of theOld Synagogue, which marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. Walk through thestreets and recall the scripture, “When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled withwisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.” (Luke 2:39-40). Independent lunch in Nazareth.Proceed to Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle. …“Do whatever he tells you.” (John2:5) The Wedding Church was built in the nineteenth century over ruins from Jesus’ time.See the display of stone jars and celebrate the Eucharist for the Feast of Mary, Mother ofGod, at the Wedding Church (including renewal of wedding vows for couples). End ourday with a visit to Sepphoris. According to tradition, Sepphoris was the home of Joachimand Anna, the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is also possible that while living inNazareth, Joseph may have trained Jesus, in this town where his mother grew up. Continueon to the unforgettable Sea of Galilee, for check-in at the Kibuttz, Nof Ginnosar. Dinner and overnight at Nof Ginosar by the Sea of Galilee. (B,D)DDaay y 55 January 2, Monday: Upper Galilee, Caesarea Philippi – Sea of GalileeTheme: The Ministry of Christ in GalileeBuffet breakfast at hotel. Begin our day with a visit to the Yigal Alom Museum in KibbutzGinnosar to see an ancient fishing boat from the 1st century that was discovered in 1986 onthe northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. After viewing the Jesus Boat, we will walk downthe pier to take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. The Gospels come to life, when Jesus wasto have walked on the water (John 6:19-21), calmed a storm (Matt. 8:23-26), and showed thedisciples miraculous catches of fish (Luke 5:1-8; John 21:1-6).Arrive at the ancient city of Capernaum, where Jesus started his ministry. It was here thatJesus found Matthew and called him to discipleship. Jesus worked many of his miracles inCapernaum. Here, the excellent condition of a 2nd century synagogue undoubtedlyenclosed the sacred sanctuary in which Jesus taught and preached. Most Scripture scholars

recognize the home of Peter’s mother-in-law in the remains of achurch near the shore as dedicated to his honor. At Tabgha, Jesuschallenged His disciples to feed a crowd of 5,000 in theMultiplication of Loaves and Fishes. Visit the Church of thePrimacy. Here, after his resurrection, Jesus met with his disciplesand told Peter to “feed my lambs; feed my sheep”. Visit, pray andsing “Blest Are They” at the Mount of the Beatitudes, where Jesuspreached his ‘Sermon on the Mount.’ Independent lunch.Drive north to explore the upper regions of Israel to the foot ofMount Hermon, overlooking Syria and the Road to Damascus, where Jesus appeared to Paul. We will visit Caesarea Philippi andreflect upon the story when Jesus looked at his disciples and said,“…But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). We will reflecthere on Peter’s response to Jesus, “…You are the Messiah...”(Matthew 16:16). We will also have prayer and time to renew ourbaptismal vows at Banias, the source of the Jordan River.Dinner and overnight at Nof Ginosar by the Sea of Galilee. (B,D)DDaayy 66 January 3, Tuesday: Magdala – Tel Meggido –Beit Shean – Mt. TaborTheme: The TransfigurationBuffet breakfast at hotel. Tabor. “...Lord, it isgood for us to be here...” (Luke 9:33).At the foot of Mt. Tabor take a taxi to the top of Mt. Tabor. It washere where we call to mind the story (found in Mark, Matthew andLuke) where we remember the Transfiguration. Visit the site of theTransfiguration, with time to reflect on Christ’s humanity anddivinity, good preparation for the journey to Jerusalem. PrayerService at the Church of the Transfiguration.Dinner and overnight at Nof Ginosar by the Sea of Galilee. (B,D)DDaayy 77 January 4, Wednesday: Samaria – JerusalemTheme: Jesus in SamariaBuffet breakfast at hotel. Today’s bus journey is filled with varietyand excitement. Leave the Sea of Galilee and head south toSamaria-Sebastia, a land rich in Jewish biblical history. Sebastia, built by Herod as the capital of the region and where John theBaptist was buried after he was put to death. See the twin peaks ofMt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal, known in the Hebrew Scriptures as Mt.Blessing and Mt. Cursing. Mt. Gerizim is today the home of the fewremaining Samaritans. Stop at Jacob’s Well, hewn out of solid rockover 100 feet deep. The water at the bottom of the well is fed byflowing water which is why ancients gave it the name of “livingwater”. It is at this well that we hear John’s story of the Samaritanwoman and where Jesus said to her: “Everyone who drinks this waterwill be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will neverthirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water wellingup to eternal life.“ (John 4:13-14). Independent lunch. Then head to Jerusalem through the beautiful Levonah valley, referred to in Judges as the Valley of the Dancers and passingShiloah, where the Ark of Covenant was kept. Verses from the Magnificat are engraved on the columnsof the church, and on the wall opposite it are ceramic tablets bear-ing verses from the Magnificat in forty-two different languages.Continue on to visit Yad Vashem, the memorial to the victims of theHolocaust.
