Today's Guest Columnist is LEE MALONEY

Greetings from Hoxie-land.I'd like to open this column by extending mymost sincere condolences to JOHNNY WEL*OE and family over the recent loss of youngJohnny's wife, DANIELLE. I had the pleas-ure of working with them a few years ago onCirque Gatini and Danielle was one of myclosest friends. Her brother. 6ILLES VALI-QUETTE, was a part-owner of Cirque GatiniShe will be greatly missed by those of us whoknew her.CR has already published numerous reviewsof Hoxie this year, so I'm going to dispensewith listing all the acts, etc., and get right in-to the DIRT!Business on Hoxie has definitely not been upto expectations • promotions and attendancehave both been down. Business is expected topick up as the show moves North.General manager JOE McMAHON went tothe front door to settle an argument with atowner our first week out, a fight developed, and Joe was knocked down, injuring his knee;He discovered after that the man held a blackbelt in karate. Joe was confined to his trailerfor a few days, then had to walk with a cane, but is feeling much better now.WALT STIMAX bought another chimp fromFRANK and JANET BURGER this winter •a 5 year old male named Colby. This makesthree chimps for them. Walter has traded hismake-up in for a broom this season - he'sthe prop boss. (Since this column was writ-ten Walt has left the show and is now work-ing fair dates in Canada).BILL BRICKLE's Wonderland Circus Revuewill open Nov. 17th in Marion, SC. He hasalready added 15 new academies to his tour.Bill is negotiating with the CARLOS CAM-PA family and CONNIE WELOE to tour onhis show this winter. He has recently pur-chased some new illusions from JIMMYDOUGLAS. The show is expected to tour17 weeks again.Hoxie is very strong in the air this year.CHUCK and DANA ARMSTRONG are do-ing their hanging perch and head balance

trapeze acts. They have everything going forthem - looks, wardrobe, youth, nice tricks,PLUS Chuck is an electronic whi/. He canfix just about any microphone, amplifier, light box, or whatever you might bring him• a real asset as shows convert more andmore to sophisticated equipment.

FREDDIE WHITE closes the first half of theshow with his single trap act. This 27 yearold young man never fails to get a good re-sponse from the public - especially the girts! He has a very clean act with difficult tricksand good showmanship. Freddie has unfor-tunately, spent most of his career on ob-scure little shows or out of the country - alashe hasn't received the recognition he deser-ves. Agents and producers that have visitedthis year have all shown an interest in hisact. Watch for his name to be popping upmore and more as word spreads about him.New to Hoxie this year is RAMON ESPANADoctors discovered that Ramon had develop-ed cancer and gave him six months to live. His wife, TAMARA. took him and their 2year old son to a famous cancer treatmentcenter in native Germany, where he under-went a series of operations and treatmentsfor the disease. The bill totaled over $35,000- which the German government paid! Heleft there last year, totally cured, and lookslike a million dollars. He does a baggage com-edy act and a rola bola act in which he bal-ances on five cylinders. He's currently prac-ticing the same trick using seven cylinders. You have to see it to believe it.Visitors on the lot recently have included:BUCKLES WOODCOCK, MIKE and JAN-ICE ARIA, GUNNAR AMANDIS, JIMMYDOUGLAS, VERN WOERNER, MARY JOCOULS, JIMMY COLE, SERGE CORONA,KEITH and CATHY KILLINGER, MARYBRICKLE, JERRY WRIGHT and others. The Miss Popularity award this season willhave to go to ELIZABETH CAMPA, whohas not one, but two different boyfriendson the show. And, if that's not enough, shehas a 'secret admirer' on the Nordmarkshow (he does juggling) and another 'Mr.X'

TEARS AGOOn June 22,1908, the Gollmar Bros. Circustrain was enroute from Jamestown, Wise., toBismarck, N.D.Just before daybreak the train hit an enginehead-on at Medina. N.D. The 30 ft. stockcars were telescoped, the bull car was thrownover on its side and 35 horses (baggage) werekilled. Some of the horses were placed in an opencorral until they were ready to rejoin the cir-cus. One horse by the name of 'Spike' seem-ed to be constantly restless and so one dayhe was let out of the corral. Immediately hewent to the site of the train wreck, wherehe layed down at the grave of the other hor-ses and then he slowly walked back to thecorral, layed down by the fence and died.

ANIMAL PROBLEMS CONTINUE

This past week additional information hasbeen obtained about the problems that aredeveloping between Otto Qerosini and theCalifornia State Fish and Game Commision.Berosini returned from a date in Mexico tosee if he could obtain the release of his ani-mals which had been confiscated during thepast month. He was successful in those negotiations andhis animals were returned to him, but he re-ports the officials told him he must leave thestate immediately.Because one of the cats was injured in thevarious shifting operations, Berosini wentlooking for a vet, instead of leaving immed-iately. Apparently the doctor reported hisappointment with Berosini to State officialswho came and once again confiscated theanimals. The latest report from Berosini's lawyer isthat he expects Berosini will be jailed andthat his animals will be disposed of.Last week Circus Report contacted a gen-erally reliable news source in San Franciscoin an attempt to get additional informationabout the situation. That source suggested that Circus Reportought to expose the Fish & Game Commis-sion for what it is. However, they warned,it will be difficult, if not impossible to getpeople to name names and openly admitthat serious unethical practices are carriedout by the state organization. The source stated that they show their au-thority whenever possible and do anythingthey can to take animals away from people. They along with the SPC A, Animal Friends,Save the Animals and other "do-gooders",he said are responsible for much of the pro-

blems that animal people face in the state. The San Francisco informant said the Fish& Game Commission does indeed have ananimal facility in Southern California, outin the hills not far from Los Angeles. Allconfiscated animals are impounded there. The animals are kept there for a brief timewhile they are gradually disposed of. Theprocess of getting rid of the animals meansmaking deals to sell them overseas, some-times at prices which are bid up at an auc-tion.The operator of the facility makes the dealsand handles the sale. For this the operatortakes a percentage, with the rest of themoney going to the Fish & Game people.

DANIELLE WEIDEOctober 14, 1959 - April 26, 1980

You gave us so many things. Each time that you came to visit us, you arrivedwith your gaiety, concerned about bringing us happiness. Yes, you were hap-py. You were our joy.You were loved, and you knew it. You tried to give back this love. You leftus quietly. Will we ever know how much life meant to you? You loved. Loveis the onfy thing of value which will enable us also to enter the Kingdom.Your death made us realize that there is a time for everything, a moment foreach thing under the sun - a time to be born, a time to die and to be reborn.

Our since thanks to the personnel of the Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros.Circus and to other show people everywhere.

ROBERTS BROS. CIRCUS... by Stan Mutford

Ankle deep water in the rings greeted therain soaked patrons as they arrived for theMay 20th, appearance of the Roberts Bros.Circus in Galax, Va., But arrive they did. Itwas standing room only for both perform-ances despite the mud and rain. The publicwas not disappointed either. The ninetyminute performance was well worth the ex-tra effort involved in braving the elements. The brand new 60x160 ft. top (60 ft roundwith two thirty and one forty foot middles)looks good on the lot, surrounded by thesixteen vehicles which move the performersand show, and fronted by a clean well-flash-ed midway. Much fresh paint, and the artis-tic hand of veteran show painter OzzieSchleentz, is seen everywhere around theshow. The sparkling seventeen display perform-ance, under the direction of Jeff Earl, isannounced by illusionist George Rowe, with music provided by Bob Snyder on theorgan and Mario Ferrara on drums. The line-up is: Grand Entry Parade, includ-ing the entire performing troupe and them-ed to the accompanying vocalization of"Everything's Coming Up Circus" by Geo.Rowe; The Great Tino, rota bola; Jeff andGinnie Earl, and their Terrier Canine FriendsOscar Marcias and Co., hand balancing; Jo-Mar the Royal Clown; Aerial Ballet, featur-ing Miss Ginnie and Miss Rebecca on swing-ing ladders; Lisa Marcias, foot juggler; JeffEarl, and Mr. Romeo, pick-out pony; Moi-ses Ferrara, comedy chair; Bobby and Jim-my, Vent; Kalamar the Wizard, illusionsand feats of legerdemain; Intermission; Ba-

lloon pitch; Pasha, the Performing elephant;presented by Capt. Jeff; Jo-Mar the RoyalClown; Kalamar returns with a truly impres-sive display of the illusion which even Hou-dini feared to attempt, catching a bullet; The Incomparable Oscar Marcias, cloudswing; The Entire Company returns to bida fond farewell to the audience in the bigGrand Finale. The true merit of a tent circus really showson a muddy wet lot. And a full measure ofcredit goes to each and every member ofthe company, from Oscar Marcias to thecanvas crew (Big Bob), for a thorough dis-play of complete professionalism. The larg-er shows have something to learn from theEarl Family and their fine troupe about giv-ing the audience its money's worth, despitethe inconvenience.

The staff for the 1980 tour includes: Own-er/General Agent, Robert Earl; Owner/Genera! Manager, Doris Earl; Performance Dir-ector/Big Top Boss, Jeff Earl; Wardrobe/Cookhouse, Ginnie Earl; Transportation/Electrical, Bobby Earl; Bookkeeping, Ter-esa Earl; Concessions, Ozzie Schleentz;Novelties, Joe Myers; Music, Robert Sny-der; and Special Coordinator, George Rowe.

CIRCUS QUIPS. . . by K A R L J. BISCHOFF

TWIDDLING THUMBS, some people don'tknow whether they want a temporary job tosuit their life style or a permanent job tochange their life style.

THE WAY SOME show arrows are put upcan be compared to a pin. It's pointed inone direction and they're headed in another.

A CIRCUS OWNER bought a menage hor-se from another show, the next day the buy-er called to tell him that he was not satisfied,it won't keep its head up - - "Oh, that's al-right," said the former owner. "That horsehas pride, he won't put his head up untilthe check is good."A SUCCESSFUL public relations man will

never tell more than he will believe.DON'T WORRY about the past, there is

always plenty of trouble ahead.
