7 AprilA reminder that April is the month to send records you have on Daltons in Jackson County Missouri. Since we missed this week (I failed to encourage contributions last week), let's double-up next week. The county for May will be Oglethorpe County Georgia--you are welcome to send collected Dalton data from that county any time between now and the end of May.

What counties next? And is this helpful? Please take a moment to let me know. Thanks. —Melanie

21 AprilJackson Co. MO is the Featured County this month--please send in whatever material you have so that there is a good collection as a reference tool. Thanks.

28 AprilThis month has come and gone with very little additions to the material on the Daltons in Jackson County MO. Next month the featured county is Oglethorpe Co. Georgia. If you have gathered data in that area, will you please consider sharing it with others? Thanks

* Kim Ashby, [email protected] Kim descends from William Dalton, the first Dalton to settle in Carroll Co.

* Deanna Edwards, [email protected] great grandfather Orval M. Dalton had told us that we were related to the Dalton Gang, that was all that he would say about the matter. All that he would add was that they were 3rd cousins to my father. Orval was born Sept.10,1900 died Oct.2,1971. My uncle Larry Dalton had done some research before he died, I never knew him until my father died then 6 months later he died. I didn't get much info from him before he died, I was just starting my research then. If you can help me or know anyone that can it would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

* Kathy Cunningham, [email protected] have a distant cousin who mentioned the DALTON NEWSLETTER and said I might want to get on the list. I come through the WITCHER/DALTON line.

* RESPONSE: DALTONS AND DYERS IN GRAINGER CO. TN from Rebecca Dyer, [email protected]'s note: Rebecca has been a go-between for a Dyer researcher (Grace) and our newsletter. It is just this kind of thing that might open a new door. Here's what Rebecca sent recently:

Grace checked the 1830 Grainger County census where she found David Dalton living

in a house between Charlton Dyer and George Dyer. Next to George lived James Strange who was in Pittsylvania County, VA, with the Dyers. Charlton Dyer's father (relationship not proven) Joseph went to Henry County and bought land from a Hairston in 1808. Charlton was the witness. In 1809 Joseph sold the property and went back to Grainger County.

She also says to pass along:In 1804 Reuben Dalton is listed on Captain John Dodson's Tax Company.

Also in 1804 Ennis/Enis/Enos Dalton lived at Indian Creek. A Jesse Cheek ran a ferry here. Cheek hired Davie Crockett (when he ran away from home) as a sheepherder.

She has no information on Claiborn Dalton.

* QUERY: GUY DALTON from Cheryl Davis, [email protected] am searching for a Guy DALTON who married a Eliza Catherine SAYERS. A child was born of this union a Virginia Dink Dalton born June 15, 1902. Supposedly Guy DALTON was killed by his brothers about 6 months before his daughter Virginia was born. Somewhere around the late 1901 or early 1902. Any info on this Guy Dalton would be appreciated. --Thanks Cheryl

History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio: Some of the Prominent Men and Pioneers. Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio: Published - 1880

Colonel Isaac Dalton

The subject of this sketch is one of the older settlers of Franklin county, and his family genealogical record is of considerable interest. Philemon Dalton, Hannah, his wife, and Samuel, their son, came to this country from England in the ship

"Increase" on the fifteenth of April, 1635 --fifteen years after the landing of the Pilgrims. Samuel Dalton married three times, his third wife, Mehitabel Palmer, having many children - the eldest, Samuel Dalton. This Samuel married, and had one son, Isaac, who married, and had six children, viz: Samuel, Abigail, Mary, Meriam, Moses, and Ruth. These names are all given in a letter written by their father, Isaac Dalton, from the battle-field of Louisburg, in 1745, a copy of which is in the possession of Benjamin Dalton Dorr, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Samuel Dalton, who was grandfather of the subject of this sketch, married Hannah Evans, and had ten children, viz: Mollie, Hannah, Ruth, Isaac (father of colonel), John, Jonathan, Abigail, Dorithy, Meriam, and Lucy. The full record of Samuel's family is in what is called the old Dalton Bible, now in possession of Benjamin Dalton Dorr, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Valuable information has been obtained, in the genealogical history of the Dalton family, from the "New England Genealogical and Historical Register," published quarterly at Boston since 1841. "Farmers' Genealogical Register," and "Shirtlieff"s Records of Massachusetts."

The said Isaac Dalton, Sr. (father of the colonel), was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, March 2, 1761. After serving through the Revolution as a soldier, he married Eleanor Merrill, who was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, in 1763. They moved into New Hampshire, where they had fourteen children, six of whom only lived to grow up, viz: Samuel, who married Judith Brown, and had three children; Hannah, who married John Stewart, and had six children ; Nancy, who married Samuel Collins, and had ten children; Polly, who married William Merrill, and had one son; John E., who married Clarissa L. Cassett and Elizabeth Cassett, and had eight children, and Col. Isaac Dalton, who was born in Warner, New Hampshire, on May 27, 1801, and baptized on September 13, 1801, by the Rev. William Kelly, pastor of the Congregational church. He experienced religion in the fall of 1821, and was received into the Congregational church, June 23, 1822, by Rev. John Woods, pastor. After holding various military positions, in 1831 he was commissioned by the governor of the State of New Hampshire to serve as colonel of a regiment of State militia. He also held a prominent position in the Masonic fraternity, having been exalted to the sublime degree of royal arch mason, and also, to that of royal and select master. He came to Columbus, Ohio, on September 15, 1831, and received dismission from and recommendation to the church on June 20, 1833, by the rev. Jubilee Wellman, pastor. He united with the First Presbyterian church, in July, 1833 - the Rev. James Hoge, pastor. He was married to Elizabeth Foster, of Canterbury, New Hampshire, on October 27, 1834, who died November 28, 1841. He was elected and ordained elder in the First Presbyterian church, in the spring of 1835. His first child, Sarah Foster, was born October 25, 1836, and died August 8, 1837; the second, Joseph Merrill, was born February 9, 1839, and died October 8, 1846; the third, Alfred Foster, was born May 22, 1840, and died August 31, 1841; the fourth, Sarah Elizabeth, was born October 28,

1841, and died November 2, 1873. He was married to Elvira Stewart, of Columbus, on the twenty-eighth of December, 1843. By her his first son, William, was born April 16, 1845, and died December 16, 1866; his second son, John Calvin, was born on May 31, 1849.

During the colonel's early life, he had lived on a farm with his parents, until about eighteen years of age, when he left home to follow the carpenter business, in which he was engaged until he came to Columbus. On April 1, 1837, the trustees of the Institution for the Blind appointed him steward, and Mrs. Dalton, matron, to collect the pupils, board, and teach them. The institution was formally opened on July 4, 1837, under the charge of A.W. Penniman. He remained in the institution four years, until Mr. Wm. Chapin was appointed superintendent, and took charge of the same. He then returned to his former occupation until 1859, when he commenced plane-making, and worked for the Ohio Tool company until April, 1862. He was at that time commissioned by Governor David Tod, to take charge of the sick and wounded soldiers arriving at the union depot, feeding them, and, when necessary, furnishing them with clothing, and assisting them to get transportation to their homes, or sending them to the hospital. He was engaged at the Soldiers Rest for over four years, until all the Union soldiers were discharged or returned home.

During the prevalence of the cholera in 1849 and 1850, he was appointed by the city council, a member of the special board of health, to attend to all cholera patients, and see that they were supplied with good nurses, and made a full report of every case to them daily. He was thus engaged about three months each year.

After his services at the Soldiers Rest , he returned to his home near the court house, on south High street, which he purchased in 1834, where he has lived most of the time since that date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4. Family Line: Janet Goad Hill [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I descend through six lines from William Dalton (born c. 1747-died 1810) and his wife Elizabeth (lots of folks say she was a Sturman...but to my knowledge, no one has ever produced the documentation to prove it). William and Elizabeth settled in Carroll County, Virginia.

I also have two lines that descend from Elizabeth Dalton Bennett Bobbitt, daughter of Timothy Dalton (d. 1775) of Bedford County, Virginia. THAT IS EIGHT (8) DALTON LINES!

Through my paternal grandfather Walter Goad (1875-1947):

1) I am the g-g-g grand daughter of Patience Dalton (c. 1780-1840's), daughter of William & Elizabeth Dalton. Patience married Spencer Goad (1785-1857), son of Robert Goad and Isabel.

2) I am the g-g-g-g grand daughter of Nancy Dalton (1775-1860's), daughter of William & Elizabeth Dalton. Nancy married William Largen (1770's-1830's).

Through my paternal grandmother Laura V. Nester Goad (1882-1957):

3) I am the g-g-g grand daughter of Susannah Dalton, who was the 1st wife of Isaac Mabry (born c. 1798) I do not have proof of Susannah's parentage, but she is most likely a daughter or grand daughter of William & Elizabeth Dalton.

4) I am the g-g-g grand daughter of Rachel Dalton (c. 1778-1860), daughter of William & Elizabeth Dalton. Rachel married Aaron Goad (1784-1854), son of Robert Goad and Isabel.

5) I am the g-g grand daughter of Susan Dalton (1822-1866), who was the first wife of Isaac Goad (1824-1892). Isaac was the son of Aaron Goad and Rachel Dalton. I do not know Susan Dalton Goad's parentage, but she is most likely a grand daughter of William & Elizabeth Dalton.

Through my maternal grandmother Lura Ada Quesenberry Webb (1889-1966):

6) I am the g-g-g grand daughter of Timothy Dalton (c. 1783-1872) son of William & Elizabeth Dalton. Timothy married Elizabeth Phillips (c. 1783-1850's) daughter of Tobias Phillips and Margaret "Peggy" Jennings.

7) Through Diannah Bobbitt who married Jonathan Jennings, I am the g-g-g-g-g-g granddaughter of Elizabeth Dalton Bennett, daughter of Timothy Dalton (d. 1775) of Bedford County, Virginia. Elizabeth was the widow of Richard Bennett. In 1734, Elizabeth married James Bobbitt (c. 1707-c.1761), son of William Bobbitt, Jr. (1675-1738) and Mary Green.

8) Through Nancy Bobbitt who married William Henson, I am the g-g-g-g-g-g grand daughter of Elizabeth Dalton Bennett and James Bobbitt. (See #7).

WHEW! Now, if you think I have a lot of Dalton lines....you should see how many

times I descend from Abraham Goad and Katherine Williams of Richmond County, Virginia!

*NOTE: DANIEL AND SUSANNAH KEY WITCHERAn exchange of notes and responses

1. from Rebecca Dyer, [email protected]: I am fairly certain that Daniel Witcher married Susannah KEY (not Susannah

Key Dalton; William Witcher II married Molly Dalton--they witnessed Thomas Ramsey's will). If I am incorrect, would you be kind enough to provide your source. It's interesting to note that some of the early Witcher's migrated to Grainger County, TN. So did some of the Dyer's and Dalton's. It's also interesting to note that Sally Witcher's/Woodson Ramsey's children were named for her father (Daniel Ramsey) and her brothers and sisters (Tandy Ramsey, Lacy Ramsey, Booker Ramsey, Charity (Sallie) Ramsey, Elizabeth Ramsey, Nancy Ramsey). Woodson Ramsey II and Thomas Ramsey (the other two boys) were named for Woodson I and his father Thomas.

Daniel Witcher and Susannah Key named one son Tandy K. Witcher. Does anyone know if the "K." stands for "Key?"

2. from Kathy Cunningham, [email protected], too, have seen both Susannah Key and Susannah Key Dalton. Thank you for

trying to solve the puzzle! There is a Tandy Key on the Key line--and, as you know, a Tandy Witcher and a Tandy Ramsey. I'd love to get all these folks in their correct spots!

The information I received for the latter name [Dalton] came from another researcher. I will forward your message on to him because he would have the verification.

3. from Carmelita Walker, [email protected]'s middle name may be Kenneth because I saw papers in the Jackson

Co TN courthouse basement and it was very hard to read but it appeared it could be Kenneth. These papers were from 1849 and were about his estate after he died.

I, however, believe her name was Susannah DALTON although I only have secondary evidence. In the summer of 1997, Dr. Marcus Key, renowned KEY family researcher researched this mystery for me. (He has been researching the Key family for over 40 years and has published several books, and many periodicals.....documenting everything very well).

He could find NO Susannah KEY who could have been the correct age to be married to our Daniel. Nor could he find any Susannah who married a KEY and was widowed and could have married our Daniel. Listed below is the secondary evidence. He found in the Rev. War records of Solomon Dalton a letter which you will also find below.

Here is what Dr. Key had to say about it:

>>>>Subj: DaltonsWhat if Tandy Key Witcher and his sister Nancy (Witcher) Young had stated that

they were closely related to Solomon Dalton? They did so in an affidavit in Macon

Co., Tenn., in 1849, in support of Mary Dalton's pension application as widow of Solomon Dalton, a Revolutionary War Veteran. The term kinship term used was "nearly related," which doesn't mean "almost;" in this case it meant "with close kinship." Example used in Random House Dictionary was "two women nearly related." An old meaning but appropriate for that time. This is the additional proof we were looking for. Regards,

Marcus<<<<<

[Carmelita]: I asked Dr. Key where he found this info (if it was in the Macon Co TN courthouse) & he said it was in Solomon Dalton's Rev. War papers. His reply:

<<<<<Subj: Re: DaltonsYou won't find the affidavit in the Mason Co., TN, Courthouse. It is filed with the other papers in Solomon Dalton's file (R. 2635) in the National Archives in Washington, which you can obtain by mail. Good hunting in Tennessee. Marcus<<<<<<

[Carmelita]:---------------------Other secondary evidence-------------

I believe Susannah is the daughter of Robert DALTON & Mary KEY. Mary was the daughter of John KEY & Martha TANDY (not proved but thought to be a Tandy). Most people list Robert Dalton & Mary Key's children's births from 1749 to 1760 (one says 1764). Susannah would certainly fit in those time frames.

Several children of Daniel & Susannah named their children & grandchildren & great grandchildren, etc with the names Dalton, Key, Tandy, Lacy & Booker. In fact, 5 generations down in Daniel & Susannah's line a son was given the middle name of Dalton b. 1907. Four generations down is John Tandy Witcher. Daniel & Susannah had granddaughters named Mary Key Witcher & Susannah Dalton Young, They had grandsons named Daniel Dalton Goad, Tandy Ramsey, Tandy Key Young, Tandy Wade Witcher, Tandy David Witcher, a great grandson named Tandy Witcher.

Even Daniel & Susannah name their children:Tandy Key-after Susannah's mother & grandmother (?)Mary Martha (after Susannah's mother Mary KEY & grandmother Martha

Tandy?)Patsey-I suppose this may be the nickname for Martha (after Mary's mother

Martha Tandy)

4. from RebeccaCarmelita,Harry Lee King tells me that Exonia King (b. 1885 and the d/o Octavia Ramsey

and J. L. King; granddaughter of Booker Ramsey and Isabella Thornton; great granddaughter of Woodson Ramsey and Sarah "Sallie" Witcher) researched the line and passed it down to him. Her research says that her great great grandmother was Susannah Key. I would really like to resolve this! I'm passing your note on to him and a few other researchers. Maybe if we all get together and do some hard research, we'll find the answer.

* QUERY: WILLIAM DALTON, WARREN CO. KYfrom Sandy Kiger, [email protected]

I just received a copy of the pension application papers that William's wife, Martha had filed for his service in the War of 1812. (Feb 1814 to Mar 1814, when he was 22 years old)

1. William apparently lived in Woodford Co, KY as a farmer for about 3 years afterhis military service before settling in Warren Co, KY. Does anyone know of anyDalton family residing in Woodford Co, KY, 1814 -1817 to whom he might be related?

2. This is a little far-stretched, but..... does anyone know of a minister by the name ofGreathouse in Warren County, KY. He supposedly married William and Martha Dalton there on Jan 5, 1817. I wonder what church he may have been associated with?

Any ideas or help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Editor's Note: Woodford Co. Kentucky is surrounded by Mercer, Anderson, Franklin,

Scott, Fayette, and Jessamine counties, to name only those with borders that touch. Clues to William could be in any of these counties so please check your records if you had Daltons there. Thanks.

* QUERY: MARY (DALTON) DUNCANfrom [email protected]

I'm looking for the parents of Mary Dalton, sorry no date of birth. She married Henry John Duncan in Grayson County, Virginia on Nov. 3, 1835. Their child was John Henry Duncan, who married Millia. Their son was George Duncan, born 1859 who married Elmira Marshall.

Also, I write a newsletter for Henry and Mary (Dalton) Duncan's descendants. If anyone is interested, email me for info. [email protected]

* NOTE: UPDATE ON MARIE SCHUMATE'S DALTONSfrom Marie A. Shumate, [email protected]

I am researching the SHUMATE family name for my children. My ex-husband's name is John Shumate. His mother was Emma Faris, whose Grandmother was a Dalton. I have not ventured into the DALTON line yet, as another family member was researching this line. However, I was interested in your newsletter as it may bring some clues to us. I will be helping with the research as soon as I finish putting together a book on my FLOYD/WINSHIP lines. I will be happy to give more exact details on the DALTON line as I get them.

* QUERY: WILLIAM DALTON, GREENBRIAR CO. WVfrom Rosemary Williams, [email protected]

The earliest mention of William Dalton in Greenbrier is in Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch Irish Settlement. On 22 Mar 1768 he has a "Hemp Certificate." My William Dalton wasn't born until 1770 so, there was one in Greenbrier before mine. In Augusta

County VA, part of which later became Greenbrier, on 3 Aug 1795, my William Dalton married Susana Harberger. I don't know what happened to Susana but William later married Mary Renick, daughter of Robert Renick and Letitia Wells Dalton. William and Mary had a daughter named Letitia W. Dalton.

I noticed that in the not-so-accurate Rowland Thomas Family records, Samuel Dalton, I or Sr, has a daughter named Letitia. I keep thinking that there is a connection someplace! I don't know if Letitia Wells Dalton and William Dalton are related but I'd bet they were. Stories of the William Dalton family by later generations in Missouri say he came from Albemarle co VA. His first name is probably Richard but he never used that name. The family seemed to be Presbyterian and were associated with the Old Stone Church in Greenbrier. William and Mary moved to Johnson county Missouri in the early 1840s where William died in 1842 at the age of 72.

Please put William and Letitia into their proper families!

The Library of Virginia invites you to visit its new online exhibition, Mapping Virginia, offering a marvelous sampling of the many types of maps created by and for Virginians in past 400 years. Mapping Virginia draws heavily on the historical maps in the Library's extraordinary collection of more than 65,000 maps. As the online exhibition illustrates the history of cartography in Virginia reflects the pivotal role of the Old Dominion as a leader in much of the political, military and economic history of the United States. With sections covering Surveyors and Mapmakers, Mapping Technology, Vision of Empire, Building the Commonwealth, The Geography of Culture and Educators' Lesson Plans, the exhibition is a fascinating look at cartography and mapmaking. Visit the electronic exhibition at: http://www.vsla.edu by clicking on Mapping Virginia.

The online exhibition is taken from the Library's much larger Mapping Virginia exhibition set to run from April 23 through December 15, 1999. If you have the opportunity to come to the Library, please visit this free exhibition open from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. The Library of Virginia is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia at 800 East Broad Street.

* NOTE: GUINEA DALTONS - WEST VIRGINIAMar 1999 issue of the journal "The Palatine Immigrant"

In an article on racial purity practiced in America, there is a source reference to a master's thesis written by Dorothy J. Cox: "A Marginal Group in West Virginia - An Historical and Cultural Study," Department of Sociology, Marshal University of West Virginia, July, 1979. [Available in some local libraries]

To produce her thesis, the author lived among the "Guineas" because they had been shunned as an ethnic group. The characteristic names within the group were Adams, Collins, Croston, DALTON, Kennedy, Mayle, Miner, Minard, Newman, Norris, and Prichard. Her thesis describes their background and the prejudices they lived with.
