Burlington Catholic 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Hardly a weekend has gone by since the beginning of the year that someone hasn’t asked me, “Where’s Deacon Brian?” As many of you know, Deacon Brian Beal is a priesthood candidate for the Diocese of Columbus, OH. He is completing his final year of formation at Pope St. John XXIII Seminary in Weston. Since last September, he has been engaged in weekend ministry at St. Margaret’s Parish. It was in late October of last year that Brian’s only sibling, his sister Mary, died quite unexpectedly. This took a heavy toll on him and his parents —particularly given that Brian’s father Emory has been ill for some time. Since the beginning of the New Year, his health situation has weakened greatly and is now in hospice care. With this development, the seminary gave Brian permission to remain by his father’s side and, of course, to provide comfort and support to his mother. I have informed Brian that he and his parents hold a special place in the prayers of our faith community. We trust that God’s compassionate mercy will bring peace to Brian’s father at this time and that the strength of God’s infinite love will give Brian the grace he needs to tend to the needs of his parents and his vocational calling. In praying for Brian and his parents, I suggest we also intercede for those who are discerning a church vocation. Sometimes there are situations in an individual’s personal or family life that can present challenges to a person desiring to be of service to God’s people. These challenges can lead a sincere and faith-filled person to actually wonder if, in fact, they are being called to the service to God’s people. Please pray for vocations and those called to serve. God bless...

DISCIPLES IN MISSION
In speaking to the prophet Jeremiah, God reminds him “before you were born, I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations, I appointed you.” What we are to proclaim is best described by St. Paul in the second reading when he speaks of what love needs to look like in our lives. Being patient, kind, not jealous, not rude, not quick tempered, hopeful, truthful – this is a tall order for each of us and yet there is no doubt that this is our task as disciples of Christ. As difficult as it may be to love in this manner, trust God’s grace at work in you.
4th
Sunday in Ordinary Time
A parent sits up with a sick child all night; a woman
makes an eight hour drive to be with her grieving
friend; the whole family comes to the first grade play
to see one of their children in a small part. All of
these scenarios have one thing in common. Each
person who acts does so out of love. Love movates,
inspires and demands the very best in each of us.
The second reading today is probably one of St.
Paul’s best-known passages. It succinctly describes
the nature and meaning of love, a&ribung to it the
rank of the greatest virtue, one that will last forever.
Love is expressed not only in words, but also in
acon that avoids the pe(ness of life and reaches
towards the perfecon of heaven. It is a small taste
of paradise. No wonder Scripture says that God is
love.
Loving others can be difficult and demanding. It may
mean sacrifice, paence and forbearance. It’s tough
to love the unlovable and the unloving, to love our
enemies and those who do harm to others. But we
need to see past the sin to love the sinner. The love
we share is the love of God that heals, forgives,
binds up and saves. Be as generous with it as you
can.
- James Gaffney

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The St. Margaret’s Bible Study Group invites you to join them for their weekly Wednesday Sessions that begin at 7:00 pm in the
Conference Room of St. Margaret’s Rectory. In addition to discussing the Scriptures for the upcoming weekend, the group also considers topics of general interest to all participants. All are welcome! For information, please call Deacon Dick Bilotta at 781-273-1248.
On Wednesday, February 20 we will be supplying meals at the Lowell Transitional Home. Volunteers are needed to ride with us to Lowell at 3:30 pm and help serve the meals and desserts for the clients. Bakers are asked to deliver homemade desserts to St. Malachy’s Church by 1:00 pm that day. On Saturday, February 16, we will be going into Boston for the Boston Sox Exchange. Volunteers are asked to sign up at the podium outside the conference room in St. Malachy’s Church. We are in need of the following: cases of water, peanut butter sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, long sleeved T-shirts (sizes large and extra large — not undershirts) and we are always looking for new socks! Please place any donations in the big box outside the church’s conference room. Either of the above ministries would welcome students who are in need of completing ‘service hours.’ Thank you for supporting these very important ministries!
CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT Our 6th Annual Cribbage Tournament will be held on Saturday, February 16 beginning at 6:30 pm in the St. Malachy’s Parish Hall. Sign-up sheets will be available at the
doors of St Malachy and St Margaret’s Churches beginning January 1. Plan now to join us for a really fun time! Please contact Joe Velardi 781-272-9375 or Ken Carey 617-840-0225 if you have any questions.
IN HONOR OF ST. BLAISE
The “Blessing of Throats” will be offered at the
conclusion of all Sunday Masses this weekend - February 2 & 3.
PRE-SCHOOL SESSIONS Several parents have asked about initiating a program for those of kindergarten age (4 and 5 year olds) that will introduce them to some of the ‘basics’ of our Catholic faith. The first gathering of this pre-
school group will take place on Sunday, February 10 at 8:45 am in Room 1 of St. Margaret’s Religious Education Building. The focus for this first session will center on a Valentine’s Day theme and Jesus’ love for us and how we share that love with others, especially within our families. For additional information, contact Pat Harris at 781-272-5810.
