Message from Coach Jack Wyant

As I begin my second year as head coach of the Women’s Squashteam at the University of Pennsylvania, it is truly an honor to leada program that boasts world-class student-athletes, a rich tradition, and tremendous support from the University community, alumniand parents.

The program owns five National Championships, one team titlein 2000, and four individual titles — Alicia McConnell in 1982,1983 and 1984, and Jessica DiMauro in 1996. Penn women’ssquash has also produced 34 All-Americans since 1988.

My coaching goals are:- To create a positive atmosphere - Make squash practice and matches exhilarating and rewarding experiences. - Facilitate team chemistry. - Emphasize leadership and strength of character. - Encourage honest interaction between players and coaches to enhance improvement. - Work hard. - Work smart. If these goals are achieved, then success will follow. Penn squash seeks exceptional student-athletes who are looking

to develop athletically and intellectually within a team setting. Myaim as coach is to send strong young women out into the worldbrimming with confidence gained from four years of competition, camaraderie with teammates, and successes on the court, in theclassroom and in the community.

Thank you for your interest in Penn Squash. Go Quakers!

After finishing the 2004-05 season withan 11-5 record and a No. 5 nationalranking, there wouldn’t seem to be

much room for improvement for the Pennmen’s squash team. Yet, top to bottom, HeadCoach Craig Thorpe-Clark believes that the2005-06 edition of the Penn men’s squashteam will be one of the best teams he hasscoached.

“Our key this year is that we’re going to bereally solid from five or six down,” Thorpe-Clark said, adding that the parity will givethem an advantage in contests against moreunbalanced opponents. “It doesn’t matter ifthe number one player wins or the numbernine player wins - a win is a win.”

Despite losing four seniors to graduation,Thorpe-Clark will be able to plug holes witha group of veterans that has a proven trackrecord of success. “There are a few guys whoare stepping up to fill the void. They’re readyfor it,” he said.

The team’s co-captains — senior JacobHimmelreich and junior Gilly Lane — will bea critical part of the line-up in 2005-06. Laneis a two-time second-team All-American whofinished last season ranked as the 11th-bestplayer in the nation. Himmelreich has puttogether a solid career for the Quakers, whichincludes a 5-3 overall mark last season and anNISRA Individual Championships berth as afreshman.

“Gilly has made a big committment to hisgame. I expect that by the end of the season,he’s going to be a top-8 player in the coun-try,” Thorpe-Clark said. “Jacob is a great com-

petitor who knows how to win tough match-es. He is going to have a pretty forceful sea-son.”

The top five flights will be well taken careof with Lane, Himmelreich, junior Ben Ende, and sophomores Lee Rosen and SpencerKurn returning. Behind them will be a tal-ented mix of returners and newcomers look-ing to make an impact on the line-up.

Junior Graham Bassett will fight for a spotalong with classmate Will Simonton, whostruggled with injuries in 2004-05 but willcontribute to this year’s team. Juniors SamPeelle and Ryan Rayfield and sophomoresPierce Cravens and Suleyman Saleem willalso compete for slots in the young but expe-rienced line-up.

Four freshmen will also enter the mix thisseason. Bobby Dickey, Parker Justi, NickMalinowski and Andrew Zimmerman allhave the ability to make an impact on theteam this season. Justi and Zimmermanbring extensive junior experience with them, while Dickey and Malinowski will challengefor spots in the starting line-up.

With just two seniors on the roster,Thorpe-Clark believes this team could havethe beginnings of a national power.

“I look at this as the start of a new youngteam coming through,” he said. “We canmake up some ground on those top-fourteams.”

Penn will face three of those top-four

teams during its Ivy League schedule.Harvard, Princeton and Yale finished sec-ond, third and fourth, respectively, in lastyear’s final national rankings, and top-ranked Trinity is also on this year’s slate.

With such a talented blend of players tocraft a line-up, Thorpe-Clark has ample rea-son to believe that the Quakers can repeatas a top-five team and push the nation’s elitein competition.

“We want to be challenging for that top-four,” he said. “I think this year we just needa real team effort to do it.”

line-up behind Ahluwalia and Pearson.Junior Caitlin Russell finished the seasonranked 34th in the nation with a 3-6 overallrecord. Sophomore Lauralynn Drury went 5-4 overall and was ranked 39th in the countryfollowing her debut season. In addition, sen-ior Colleen Gurda, junior Annie Barrett, andsophomores Elizabeth Kern and ChloeWynne all return after starting for the Redand Blue in 2004-05. “We are going to havetremendous depth,” Wyant said.

An extremely talented recruiting class willjoin the Quakers for 2005-06, including twoof Canada’s top junior players. Tara Chawlawas a very successful junior player inCanada, taking fourth place at the CanadianJunior Championships in both the U-17 divi-sion in 2003 and U-19 division in 2005.Alisha Turner also competed in the 2005 U-19 competition, where she ironically facedoff against Chawla in the quarterfinals.

Meggie Kempner, who was a highly suc-cessful interscholastic squash player atDeerfield Academy, and Emily Goodwin, who was the Hotchkiss School’s No. 1 player, will round out the Class of 2009.

The schedule will once again be a chal-lenging one, as Penn will compete with thenation’s elite teams. Nine of the top 11 teamsin last year’s rankings, including all of thetop-five teams, are on the slate. The Quakerswill open at Cornell on Nov. 19 before mak-

ing their home debut against Ivy League foeand top-ranked Yale on Dec. 3.

“I’m very optimistic about this season andthe improvement of the team,” Wyant said.“We try to focus on getting better every day,and if we do that, we can achieve greatthings.”

“Last year we experienced an outpouringof support from the Penn family,” he contin-ued. “We hope that support will continue. We feel the program is on the way up.”

With nearly every component of theline-up returning, including lastyear’s No. 1 and No. 2 players,

the Penn women’s squash team has all thetools available to improve upon its No. 6national team ranking last season.

“We’re fortunate that we have seven ofnine returning to the starting line-up,” saidHead Coach Jack Wyant. Losing just two let-terwinners, combined with one of the deep-est recruiting classes in the country, shouldallow Wyant to craft a winning team in hissecond season at the helm.

“My first season was everything I couldhave asked for,” he said. “The group I inher-ited is a tremendous group of women.”

A major advantage for the Quakers is thereturn of junior captains Paula Pearson andRadhika Ahluwalia. No. 1 player Pearson fin-ished 2004-05 ranked 14th in the nation, earning her a second-straight second-teamAll-America spot. Pearson is also a two-timefirst-team All-Ivy League selection.Ahluwalia, who joined Pearson as a second-team All-American in 2003-04, returns as theteam’s No. 2 player after finishing ranked23th in the country and placing 13th at theConstable.

“They are two of the hardest working stu-dent-athletes on the team,” Wyant said. “Ascaptains, they’ve reached out not only toreturning players, but also the freshmen.Having them back as upperclassmen, we canexpect more improvement from them thisyear.”

A solid group of players will bolster the

The University of Pennsylvania men’s squashteam looked to return to the top of thenational rankings in 2004-05. Return they

did, as the Quakers closed out the season with an11-5 overall record and a 3-2 mark against IvyLeague competition. The Red and Blue alsowrapped up the season with a No. 5 nationalranking by the College Squash Association.

Starting On A High NoteTo open the season, the Quakers defeated Cornell,7-2. It was the first time that the Red and Bluehad defeated the Big Red during Head CoachCraig Thorpe-Clark’s tenure. Seniors RichRepetto, Eric Bardawil and Drew Crockett, alongwith juniors Jacob Himmelrich and ColbyEmerson as well as sophomores Gilly Lane andBen Ende all had wins in the victory over The BigRed. Penn had five 3-0 victories in the match. That same day, the Quakers swept all nine match-es, 3-0, against Haverford to close out their firstday of competition on a high note.

It was then on to Yale, where the Quakers fellto the No. 3 Bulldogs, 7-2. Repetto earned Penn’sfirst point with a 3-2 victory in the second posi-tion while freshman Lee Rosen swept his oppo-nent at No. 3, 3-0, for Penn’s second point of theday. Himmelrich and Ende both fell in close five-set matches in the loss. The Red and Blue quicklybounced back from the loss, defeating Brown thefollowing day, 9-0. Six Quakers won their match-es, 3-0, in the victory.

Coming Back StrongThree more sweeps after returning from a month-long break would bring the Quakers record to 6-1. The Red and Blue defeated Navy, Amherst andGeorge Washington, 9-0, before embarking on atough road trip. Penn fell to No. 1 Trinity, 9-0,dropping all 27 points of the match before suffer-ing a tough 6-3 loss at Princeton that same week.Lee Rosen, Spencer Kurn and Drew Crockett eachearned wins in the loss to the Tigers. The Red and

Blue bounced back with a commanding 9-0 victo-ry at Franklin and Marshall, with all nineQuakers earning 3-0 wins.

It was then back to the Ringe Courts, wherePenn defeated Williams, 6-3. Lane had a 3-0 victo-ry at No. 1, while Repetto, Ende, Himmelrich andKurn followed him down the lineup with victo-ries over their respective opponents. WillSimonton closed out the match in the ninth posi-tion with a 3-0 win. That same weekend, Penn fellto Harvard, 8-1. Simonton had the only victoryfor the Quakers in the match, a 3-2 win over RyanAbraham. The following day, Penn wrapped upthe dual-match season with a 5-4 win overDartmouth. Repetto took his match, 3-0, at No. 2while Ende won, 3-1, at No. 3 to give the Quakersan early lead. Dartmouth then pulled ahead, 3-2,before the Quakers took three of the remainingfour matches to clinch the win. Kurn, Emersonand Crockett each won to give the Red and Bluethe victory.

Five Man TeamsFollowing the conclusion of the dual-match sea-son, the Quakers competed at the Five-ManTeams. Penn’s first team defeated Yale’s first team,3-2, on the first day with wins by Repetto, Rosenand Kurn, while the second team defeatedHamilton, 4-1. Sophomore Graham Bassett andfreshmen Pierce Cravens, Suleyman Saleem andRahil Shah all notched victories in the win. Thefirst team advanced to the semifinals of the “A”division, where it fell to No. 1 Trinity, 5-0. Thesecond team advanced to the final of the “B” divi-sion after defeating Albany, 3-2, in the semifinals. The Quakers fell in the final, 5-0, to Bates.

Clinching A Top SpotIt was then on to Boston for the College SquashAssociation Team Championships. In the firstround Penn faced off against a strong Princetonsquad, falling 8-1. Ende had a 3-1 win at the No. 5position for the Red and Blue’s only point of thematch. In the consolation round, the Quakersdefeated Dartmouth, 7-2, to advance to the final.Rosen, Himmelrich and Crockett each swept theirBig Green counterparts in the win. Repetto, Ende,Kurn and Bassett all collected wins in the matchto give Penn forward momentum heading intothe final.

Penn’s team season ended exactly the sameway it began all those months before, with a 7-2victory over Cornell. At the first two positions,Lane and Repetto each swept their opponents, 3-0; Himmelrich took the No. 4 match, 3-0; whileEnde became the only Quaker to win all three ofhis matches of the week with a 3-0 win at No. 5.Bardawil and Crockett took tight 3-2 matches inthe seventh and eighth positions to close out theircollegiate careers, while Bassett earned the finalpoint with a 3-1 victory at No. 9. With the winPenn finished the season with a No. 5 nationalranking, the team’s highest in more than 10 years.

“I’m just delighted with the result,” saidThorpe-Clark of the win. “The team played great. It was a great comeback after the loss toPrinceton, to beat both Dartmouth and Cornellwith scores of 7-2. It was a fitting end to the sea-

son. The team worked hard and played hard andit was a great result.”

Individual HonorsFour Quakers continued play after the TeamChampionships and wrapped up 2004-05 at theCollege Squash Association IndividualChampionships. In the first round of play, Endefell to the No. 5 seed, 3-0. Repetto, seeded 15thheaded into the tournament, fell to the No. 18seed, 3-1. He then advanced to the consolationquarterfinals after defeating Himmelrich, whohad fallen to the No. 2 seed, 3-0. Lane was theonly Quaker to have a win in the championshipbracket. The No. 12 seed in the competition, Lanedefeated Nick Chris of Yale, 3-0. He then fell tothe No. 5 seed, 3-2, after winning the first twosets.

However, that was not the end of the road forthe Quakers. Lane went on to earn Academic All-Ivy, All-Ivy League and All-America honors withhis 8-10 overall record and 2-4 mark against Ivycompetition.

While the Quakers lose four seniors who madean indelible impact on the program, a solid coreof underclassmen should help Penn stay in thetop of the national rankings in the years to come.

THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA is indisputably one of America's finest universities. Its greatness lies not in its longevity, but in its culture and achievements.

At Penn, you'll find a historic Ivy League school with highly selective admissions and ahistory of innovation in interdisciplinary education and scholarship. You'll also find a picturesque campus amidst a dynamic city and a world-class research institution.

Penn continues to carry on the principles and spirit of its founder, Benjamin Franklin —entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, outreach, and a pragmatic love of knowledge.Franklin's practical outlook has remained a driving force in the university's develop-ment.

Penn traces its origins to 1740, when a group of Philadelphians established a trust for the instruc-tion of children in a charity school. In 1750, Benjamin Franklin combined this trust with his PublicAcademy of Philadelphia, founded the year before. This institution, chartered in 1755 as the"College, Academy and Charitable School of Philadelphia," became the first university in what isnow the United States with the establishment of the country's first medical school in 1765. In 1779,it became the first university in the country to formally bear the name. Today, the Penn campus has151 buildings on 269 acres of land in West Philadelphia and is the largest institution of higher learn-ing in the city.

Today, Penn is home to a diverse undergraduate student body of over 10,000, hailing from everystate in the union and all around the globe. Admissions are among the most selective in the countryand Penn consistently ranks among the top 10 universities in the annualU.S. News & World Report survey. Another 10,000-plus students areenrolled in Penn's 12 graduate and professional schools, which arenational leaders in their fields. The Wharton School is consistently oneof the nation's top three business schools. The School of Nursing is oneof the two best in the U.S. The School of Arts and Sciences, GraduateSchool of Education, Law School, School of Medicine and School ofVeterinary Medicine all consistantly rank among the top-10 schools intheir fields.

Welcome to Penn

• Nine Penn alumni, faculty members and trustees signed the Declaration of Independence •

• Dr. John Draper took the first photographs of the moon at Penn •

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN is well-known for his many inventions, including bifocals, the lightning

rod and the Franklin stove. We like to think of Penn as one of Franklin's biggest and best inventions—and

one that continues to flourish centuries after its founding. In his "Proposals Relating to the Education of

Youth in Pensilvania" (1749), Franklin outlined a progressive college: one that would offer practical as well

as classical instruction in order to prepare youth for real-world pur-

suits. Franklin’s spirit of free inquiry and learning in the service of

society continues to guide the University today.

StudentsUndergraduates - 10,248; graduate and professional students - 9,218. Penn received18,824 applications for admission to the Class of 2009. Of those applicants, 3,916, or 20.8percent, were offered admission. About 39.2 percent of those accepted for admission tothe Class of 2009 are Black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American. Women comprise 50.6percent of all students currently enrolled. Penn has an aggregate undergraduate gradua-tion rate of 93 percent.

FacultyTotal - 4,238. Members of the faculty have earned NobelPrizes, Pulitzer Prizes, and Fulbright Fellowships. Sevencurrent faculty members have received MacArthurFellowships and 106 have received GuggenheimFellowships since 1980. Student-Faculty Ratio 6:1.

AcademicsWith 53 undergraduate departments, Penn is regardedas a national leader in programs that cross traditionaldisciplinary boundaries and combine liberal learningwith practical application, such as Biological Basis ofBehavior, International Studies and Business andManagement and Technology.

Flexible OptionsUndergraduate students at Penn choose from anincredible array of courses. Our online course cat-alog (www.upenn.edu/registrar/register) makesthat clear. What may not be immediately apparent, though, is the academic flexibility our programs permit. For example, double majors, dual-degree programs and joint-degree programs enable students to pur-sue a second major in their own or another of Penn's four undergraduate schools.

Submatriculation, another option, makes it possible for undergraduates to begingraduate programs at Penn while completing their baccalaureate degrees. Other opportu-nities for individually tailored study include the option of initiating new courses, calledpreceptorials. Recent student-initiated preceptorials have included such offerings asAstronomy for English Majors, Ways of Etiquette in Japan, Australian and AmericanLandscape Painting, Cyberspace 90210 and A Trip to Fallingwater.

Financial AidWe urge you not to let financial concerns deter you fromapplying to Penn. We make every effort to help meet stu-dents' financial needs, as illustrated by these facts: — Almost 60 percent of Penn undergraduates receive someform of financial assistance. — Nearly 40 percent of Penn undergraduates are awardedneed-based grant aid. — Approximately 76 percent of the freshmen who applied forfinancial aid for the 2005-06 academic year received a need-based award. — The average financial aid for incoming aided freshmen in2005 was $27,230 (combination of grant, loan and part-timejob). — For 2005-06, Penn committed approximately $80 million ofits resources for grant aid to undergraduate students.

EligibilityThere is no arbitrary income cut-off for financial aid eligibility. Because eachfamily is different and financial aid is determined by many factors, weencourage you to apply if you are concerned about your ability to pay.

How Financial Aid is DeterminedFinancial aid at Penn is awarded based on financial need as determined byStudent Financial Services. Financial need is the difference between Penn'scosts and the amount your family is expected to contribute (EducationalExpense Budget - Family Contribution = Financial Need). Penn reviews allapplications individually, and does not rely on the Federal EFC (ExpectedFamily Contribution).

What is a Financial Aid Award?A financial aid award, also known as a "package," typically includes a feder-al work-study job, student loan and in most cases, grant. Penn participates inall federal assistance and state programs to provide students with a compre-hensive financial aid program to meet 100 percent of your determined need.Penn offers Annenberg, Trustee and Leadership Scholarships to students withextraordinary academic, leadership and/or extra-curricular experience who alsohave financial need. Recipients of these scholarships receive aid packages tomeet their determined need without a student loan component. There is no sep-arate application for these awards; all financial aid applicants will be consid-ered.

How to Apply for AidComplete the College Board PROFILE application, Penn's Form 6 and a FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Copies of your parents' and yourtax returns and W-2 forms will also be required. Details are also in the under-graduate admissions application.

Students and their families are also encouraged to contact Student FinancialServices at:100 Franklin Building, 3451 Walnut StreetPhiladelphia, PA 19104-6270Phone - 215-898-1988Email - [email protected]

Your need is determined from data you provide on yourfinancial aid application and your parents' and your mostrecent tax returns. The following are considered in calculat-ing financial need:

· Family size · Your income and assets · Your parents' income and assets · The number of family members enrolled in college · Extraordinary or unusual family circumstances

Penn does not rely on the federally-calculated family contri-bution, but rather, carefully reviews all aid applications inorder to allocate available aid resources as equitably andeffectively as possible. Financial information from both par-ents, even if they are divorced or separated, is used to deter-mine financial need.

The success of University of Pennsylvania athletic programs weighs largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. Inorder to achieve excellence in all areas, Penn's student-athletes are encouraged to utilize services available through its academicservices program, which is coordinated by Rosemarie Burnett.

The Office of Academic Services works to insure that all student-athletes maintain academic integrity while making satisfacto-ry progress toward a degree. To this end, study sessions, tutoring in groups or on an individual basis and counseling are madeavailable to every student-athlete at the University. A student-athlete who is successful in the classroom is one that is a successfulplayer on the field. The commitment to academic and athletic excellence requires discipline, dedication and motivation. These arethe same characteristics needed for a Penn student-athlete to succeed beyond the walls of this University after earning a degree fromone of the most prestigious institutions in the country.

Grade-TTracking ProgramThe Grade-Tracking Program is designed to monitor the academic progress of targeted student-athletes during the academic year.Student-athletes selected for this program include those on academic probation and those identified by their school eligibility officer, dean or coach. Information acquired from the faculty and deans is used as the basis of student-athlete referrals to the appropriateacademic support service resources.

CAAP...Collegiate Academic Achievement Program The Collegiate Academic Achievement Program is designed to provide student-athletes with supplemental study and tutoringopportunities as well as to foster academic interaction with fellow student-athletes. Some of our CAAP tutors are current student-athletes.

During the academic year, classrooms are reserved for advising and tutoring sessions. Workshops are conducted in the begin-ning of the term on strategies for succeeding at Penn. In addition, career andgraduate presentations are organized during the academic year. CAAP sessionsare held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30-10 p.m.

Laptop Computer ProgramLaptop computers are provided to student-athletes for use while at an away com-petition or while participating in required practices and competition during vaca-tion periods. The laptop computers (as available) may be used by any in-seasonvarsity student-athlete whose participation in the next scheduled competition hasbeen confirmed by his or her coaching staff.

Faculty MentorsThe Faculty Mentor program at the University of Pennsylvania provides an additionalresource for enhancing the athletic and academic experience of our student-athletes.Faculty Mentors work with student-athletes, teams, coaches and administrators to pro-vide academic advising to current student-athletes, serve as a resource for prospectivestudent-athletes and foster relationships between athletics and the University communi-ty. Recognizing the value of intercollegiate athletics within an educational setting, facultymentors are dedicated to encouraging a balance between the pursuit of both athletic andacademic excellence.

“Paul Schmidt and Peter Struck provide a valuable link for our student-athletes betweenthe playing field and the classroom. They are always available for counsel and supporton an academic and personal level and take an active role in our student-athlete’s Pennexperience. Both of them are avid fans of Penn Athletics and, more specifically, the PennMen’s Soccer team. We are extremely fortunate to have two professors of their qualitytake such a sincere interest in our program and are thankful to have them as a part ofthe Penn Soccer family.” ~ Head Men’s Soccer coach Brian “Rudy” Fuller

Not only is Penn Athletics committed toproviding first-class experiences for itsstudent-athletes on the field, but theRed and Blue prides itself for the first-class athletic training and medical sup-port it gives off the field.

Athletic TrainingSeeing close to 100 student-athletes perday, six full-time and three part-timeathletic trainers are housed in two dif-ferent medical training centers, theMunger Training Room and the Hollenback TrainingRoom. Each staff member utilizes advanced medicaltechniques to get Penn’s student-athletes back to thecourts, fields and pools as quickly as possible. Led byHead Athletic Trainer and Coordinator of AthleticTherapy Mitch Biunno, RPT, ATC, the trainers provide service in the areas of prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation ofinjuries and related illnesses for all student-athletes at Penn. Many on his staff are members of professional organizations, and eachtrainer provides medical services for both home and away contests throughout the school year.

Medical SupportWorking closely with Biunno and his staff is Dr. Brian Sennett, who is entering his sixth year as the head team physicianfor all 33 of Penn’s intercollegiate programs. Sennett’smain duty at Penn is managing the newly renovat-ed Sports Medicine Center, which is convenientlylocated in Weightman Hall, adjacent to FranklinField. This state-of-the-art medical care facility, which is open to all student-athletes as well as thePenn community, provides services in orthopaedicsurgery, family practice, podiatry, physiatry, radiolo-gy and physical therapy.

are open up to 12 hours a day to provide student-athletes everyopportunity for a flexible workout schedule. In addition to theseareas, the new David Pottruck Health and Fitness Center is a state-of-the-art recreation facility that services the entire Penn community andprovides several thousand square feet of strength training and aerobicareas.

Sports PsychologyTraining your mind, as well as your body, is a very important aspectfor Penn’s 1,000 student-athletes. Dr. Joel Fish is entering his fifthyear as a sport psychologist for the Penn Athletic Department. Heand his staff are available to work with Penn student-athletes, teams, and coaches in order to develop their mental skills for peak perform-ance. Strategies are designed to help student-athletes and teamsimprove skills related to relaxation, focus, clutch performance, mentalpreparation, a positive attitude, motivation, leadership and team-work.
