“Your Kingdom Come” Luke 11:2 The church council and I have been working on our ministry plans including goals and budget. Allow me to share on our plan for the next five years and goals for the year 2020. We are called to build God’s Town in St. Andrew here and now, as Jesus our Lord moves us, forward to the day of New body, New Heaven and Earth. We do this for three reasons: 1. To obey Jesus Christ; 2. To live as God’s citizens here and now; and 3. To provide a place where people can see what life with God looks like. The founders of St Andrew began this work in 1954, and we will continue the legacy. As part of this divine endeavor, for the next five years, we will focus on strengthening worship service and friendship among members. Therefore, Our motto for the next five years is to Worship God and Be a friend. Our prayer is that by 2025, God would make St. Andrew a church of 115 attendees for a Sunday worship, with 80% of them belonging to a fellowship group.

I invite you and your family to join us to achieve this vision! First, please contact me if you have any questions regarding the plan and the vision. Second, consider making a commitment to worship every Sunday when you are in town and in good health. Third, please fill out your stewardship pledge form (you will receive it soon) and return it on Stewardship Sunday, October 13. Last, please pray regularly for St. Andrew to be faithful servants for the Kingdom of God in 2020. It is my joy and privilege to be your pastor and to serve Jesus alongside of you. In the early morning hours of Feb. 18, 1546, Martin Luther closed his eyes forever. And the hand that hammered the 95 Theses into the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on Oct. 31, 1517, penned its final words:

“We are all beggars. This is true.”

And this is the truth that our Lord says makes you free. Ironic, isn’t it? That, in order to be free, you must be a beggar; you must be utterly dependent and reliant upon God. This makes us uncomfortable – the way we’re uncomfortable when someone gets us a Christmas or birthday present when we haven’t gotten them one. We feel we owe them. And we don’t much like being in someone’s debt.

But what Luther would remind us is that we are all indeed beggars. But we’re not just any-one’s beggars. We’re God’s beggars. And this is His legacy to the Christian Church. Christ came for sinners. He came to seek and save the lost. He came to heal the sick and raise the dead. He came for sinners, and He dwells only with sinners.

And, if we are to be where He is, we must be willing to be counted among the lost, the sick, and the dead. We must be willing to be beggars. We must cry out for mercy, for grace, and for his undeserved love and kindness. We must be dependent solely on Him and what He gives.

And here’s the beauty: He gives us everything. Everything – forgiveness of sins, salvation from death and the devil, and eternal life. This is not because of any worthiness or merit in us, but it is because of His divine goodness, mercy, and grace.

On account of Christ’s death and resurrection, the Father forgives you, saves you, and is pleased with you. And you receive. You receive His love, His righteousness, His holiness, His acceptance, and His inheritance. We are all beggars. This is true.

This is the heart and soul of Christianity and the life-blood of the Christian Church. God justi-fies us, and He declares us innocent and righteous by His grace received through faith for the sake of Christ. This is not because of our works; this is because of His work on the cross. We, who once were enemies of God, are reconciled to Him and made to be His children.

This is what Luther would point us to when He took up his pen for the last time and scribbled “We are all beggars. This is true.” We are beggars. But we are beggars of the God who does not ignore us, who doesn’t pass by us on the other side. We are beggars of the One who de-scended from heaven to make His dwelling with sinners.

We are beggars of Him who deigns to dwell with us, among us, and – yes – even in us by grace for Christ’s sake. For in the bread and cup that we bless, we share together with Christ and each other the riches of God’s grace.

So inexhaustible are the riches of this grace – the Gospel in sermon and absolution, in Bap-tism and Holy Communion – that our cups overflow. We, who are God’s beggars, are not only inexhaustibly satisfied but have something to give back in thanksgiving and praise.

LWML Sunday, October 6th MITES FOR MISSIONS – On Your Mark, Get Ready, Save! We will be collecting mites on LWML Sunday, October 6th. Please join us in making a joyful noise to the Lord. Based on the Biblical account of the widow's mite, the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of "mites" — offerings above and beyond the support given to the congregation and the Synod. Mite Box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national mission grants. In fact, the LWML has collected over $100 million dollars since 1942. Yes … these coins have and will continue to make a difference. Thank you for contributing to the Mite Box and providing the opportunity for us to spread the Gospel to the world.

Gifts for Seafarers

The Daytimers Guild has decided to support the ministry, Houston International Seafar-ers’ Center at the Port of Houston this year. We will be collecting items for their 2019 Christmas Box Drive. If you would like to help out, please bring your donations to the narthex by Sunday, November 17th. The items should be sized to fit within a shoebox. A list of suggested items follows:

In 2018, over 9,000 Christmas Boxes were distributed to seafarers away from their families during the holidays. Thank you for your consideration. If you have any questions, please call Terry Hansen at 281-798-0534.

In March 2018, I wrote about a cyclone (hurricane in India) that demolished the seminary of our part-ner church in India, the India Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC).

Concordia Theological Seminary, Nagercoil, be-gan recovery efforts immediately. They received a grant from LCMS Disaster Response and began rebuilding. This month, I traveled to India with the Rev. Dr. Ross Johnson (director of LCMS Disaster Re-sponse), the Rev. Dr. Edward Naumann (theological educator to Southeast Asia), and the Rev. Dr. Detlev Schulz (professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana). Our purpose was twofold: to see the repairs and to gather for a Pastor’s Refresher Course (PRC). The PRC is an annual conference held at the seminary for all the pastors of the IELC. The IELC has not been able to gather for a PRC in over 12 years. This recent gathering showed the great unity these pastors had as they listened to teaching from Johnson, Naumann, and Schulz. We also gathered to see the repairs performed at the seminary. The Rev. Dr. Christudas (principal of CTSN), the Rev. Dr. Sam Thompson (professor

and project director), and the rest of the seminary faculty showed us the campus and the work they had done. Naumann, Johnson, and Schulz dedicated a num-ber of repaired or rebuilt rooms and buildings, and gave thanks for the Lord’s work. If you want to hear more about what’s been done so far, please listen to the LCMS Asia podcast (lcmsasia.fireside.fm). On episode 28, I inter-viewed Dr. Thompson about the project and future directions for the seminary. Please keep an eye on the international website for more information about this story. I’ve been working for the last week on a video about the project. Also, on a different note, I posted over 10 new stories on the international website. Take a look and learn more about what’s going on in Asia (international.lcms.org/asia/).

Booster Seats

Children who have “graduated” from child safety seats to using lap and shoulder belts too soon pose special safety concerns. Children less than 4 feet 9 inches tall (about 8 years old) do not fit vehicle seats and seat belt systems. Booster seats lower the risk of injury to children in crashes by 59 percent compared to using only a safety belt (Source: Partners for Child Passenger Safety, 6/2003).

Children also often find booster seats more comfortable than safety belts. With a boost-er seat, shoulder belts do not rub their necks and they can see out the window better. Reasons to use a booster seat • Generally, a child who is 4 to 8 years old is not big enough for a lap and shoulder belt

alone. • A booster seat is the step between a forward-facing convertible child safety seat and

the vehicle safety belt. • The booster seat raises the child so the vehicle lap and shoulder belt fits correctly.

The lap belt should rest low across the hip joints, and the shoulder belt should rest snugly on the shoulder across the chest instead of against the neck.

• A properly fitting lap and shoulder belt reduces the potential for abdominal and spinal cord injuries, which can occur when a lap belt is a child’s only restraint.

What kind of booster to choose • High-back booster with five-point harness The five-point harness (A) provides full-body protection. The harness can be used un-

til a child reaches 40 pounds. The removable harness converts the booster (B) in which a child uses the vehicle lap and shoulder belts for restraint until he or she weighs 60 to 80 pounds. (See the seat’s directions for weight limits.)

• Belt-positioning booster (B or C) is appropriate for a child 40 to 80 pounds. The

child sits in the booster seat and uses the vehicle lap and shoulder belt for restraint. A belt-positioning booster can be either a high-back booster without the harness (B) or a no-back booster (C). Do not use this type of booster in a vehicle with lap belts only.

• Shield booster seats Some booster have removable shields. Use the shield for a

child weighing 30 to 40 pounds when there is only a lap belt in the back seat. Use the booster without the shield for a larger child and use both the lap and shoulder belt– never just the lap belt. Read the weight limits on the seat since the vary.

Routines for learning: When parents get involved in learning, children are more successful. Help your youngsters get off to a good start in school by creating habits like these at home: Remind your children of rules such as “reading before play or television”, it

shows them that learning is a top priority. Also, give them a comfortable place to read or draw without distractions.

Make time each day to look over school papers with your youngsters. Be on the lookout for notes from their teachers, and mark important dates on the calendar.

Sharing at dinner time is an activity that can go beyond passing the platter. Ask your child to think of one new thing he learned during the day. It might spark an interesting conversation among everyone at the table.

Telling the Truth: Youngsters have vivid imaginations and are learning the differ-ence between fantasy and fact. Talk with your child about what’s real and what’s isn’t. Children also lie to avoid embarrassment. Pointing out when your child tells the truth will help build honest behavior. Write down when they admit to doing something or tells you about what she/he has done before you are aware of it. Review the list with your child and tell her/him you’re proud of her/his honesty.

I hope this will help you as you continue to train your child. Remember these are all good, but you should always put spiritual responsibilities above these. Chil-dren should say prayers before bedtime, participate in family devotions by light-ing the candle, reading a passage, singing a song. This puts a smile on our Heavenly Father’s face.

I pray that the Lord Jesus smiles and watches over your family.
