Recently I became curios about how many years our members had been at St. Andrew. I found out that we had a couple who had been members for 60 years! It was Rose and Robert Scott. I had been seeing Rose every month at a long-term care facility. On my next regular monthly visit day, I shared with Rose that their 60th anniversary of membership at St. Andrew was coming up the next Sunday and if she felt okay that Sunday morning, she and Robert should come to the service. I knew most likely she would not be able to attend. Rose was getting weaker each day. Few weeks prior to that visit, we had created a plaque for them and ordered it. The plaque came with their names, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of membership at the church. It came out better than could have imagined. The Anniversary Sunday came and I looked around at the pews. As I expected, Rose was not able to attend. I showed the plaque to the congregation and shared about the anniversary. I told our congregation that I would take it to them and get a picture with Rose and Robert. In my head, I said to myself, “I will take it to them this coming Thursday.” But, I ended up not going. On Thursday, I thought about it. It was in my head, but I had a lot going on that week. I said to myself, “I will just take it to them on my next monthly visit with Rose. It was within three weeks, that should be fine.”

The following week, Wednesday, I received a phone call. Rose had passed away...
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. (Pr 27:1).
I should have visited her that week. Oh, how I wish I had visited her that Thursday. I should not have waited. But I did. Why? It’s because I assumed that she would be there at our next monthly. I boasted about tomorrow. I didn’t listen to God. And now I won’t be able to see her big smile, the one she would have had when she saw the plaque. How about you? What are you pushing off to “tomorrow” that is important?

Why do we give? Is it simply because God commands us to? Or is there more to it? To be sure, the instruction and Word of God in the Bible says we should give, and this is sufficient to encourage us to give (Luke 6:38; Acts 20:35; 1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 8:7; Gal 6:6). But there’s more to it than just obligation. We’re not just trying to fulfill a work of the Law. We are bearing fruits of the Spirit given to us by our Father in heaven through His Son our Lord Jesus Christ. In other words, we’re not just doing what our Father said, we’re also doing what He did. We are the children of God, by grace, through faith. In Holy Baptism, God the Fa-ther declares of us what He declared of Jesus at His Baptism in the Jordan: “You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” God the Father claims us as His own. He takes away all our sins, and in exchange He gives us His righteousness, His purity, His holiness, and His Spirit, by which we cry out, “Abba, Father.” We are born again, born from above, born of water and the Spirit, to a new life in Christ as His children. We are sons of God in Christ, through Baptism. And since we are sons, we are heirs – heirs who share in the glory of the Son of God. The in-heritance is ours because of the Father’s grace and mercy, His generosity in send-ing His Son in time to save us for all eternity. And this is why we give generously of our income and our time and talents for the work of the church. We give to the work of the Church because we have witnessed the generous giving of our Father in heaven. His gifts are not just spiritual. They are temporal and earthly as well. As the Small Catechism teaches in the Fourth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.” What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving. What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, de-vout children, devout workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self-control, good reputation, good friends, faithful neigh-bors, and the like.”

Stewardship Corner - continued
In other words, God gives us everything we need for the care of both body and soul. His generosity knows no bounds. Therefore, we sit down at the beginning of the year, the beginning of the month, or the beginning of the week to set aside a generous portion of God’s daily bread for His work in the Church. We don’t do this simply because He has commanded us so to do; it is because we, as His children by grace, want to emulate His generosity in our own lives.

OFFICE OF THE KEYS/CONFESSION — OCTOBER 16-31 Jesus gave the office of the keys to the Church through His Apostles. Confession has two parts. First that we confess our sins, and second that we receive the forgiveness of our sins.

One of the secrets for School Success! Ask education leaders about the skills students need for school success, and for the first one most will mention, Reading. We want children to love reading. Teachers ask the parents to begin reading to and with their children from the time they are infants and to continue throughout the school year. Studies show that having a lot of reading materials available for the child while grow-ing can help in many ways, more than we may ever know. Some examples; books, magazines, newspapers, flyers, and catalogs. Being surrounded by words will help make your child comfortable with language. It will help him/her learn that words have meanings. Words are the building blocks they need for thinking, growing and learning all through their life. Suggestions for your Child’s Success: 1. Children should be in bed by 8:30 p.m. A. Let your child know about 15 minutes ahead of time that it is time to start get-ting ready for bed. B. Have a routine every night and stick with it. 2. Do not respond to whining. Instead say, “Use your words.” If they are not speak-ing yet, say “Would you like ___? And wait for a calm respond. Then say what they should have said and have them repeat with you. They will get the idea before you know it.
