If memory is our gaze on the past and past, a boat sailing away to another country, then Katia’s unex-pected journey to Istanbul traps her in a chain of adventures enacted on the front of her disrupted childhood days. Can she welcome back the crossed out motherland veiled in silence, come to terms with it and regain trust when violently deported in 1965, a child refugee with only a suitcase in mother’s hand?Ironically, during shooting in Assos, 8 miles across Lesbos Island, we rescued an ID in Arabic, floating on the Aegean before our very eyes. Past is never dead, not even past. Istanbul Story is not only a story about Istanbul.

Greece nowadays. Seven different stories about seven persons who have already reached their lim-its and finally fall apart. Despite their seemingly obvious connection they are simultaneously con-nected through a common desperate action: the last phone call to the psychological support center called “life line”. It’s their last hope. As no one can really help them, even then, they all remain another part of the contemporary Greek tragedy.

SACRILEGETRANGRESSIVE SOCIAL DRAMA GREECE201789’

By Marsa Makris

Caged in a decaying labyrinthine penthouse, cut off from an also decaying and threatening sur-rounding world that they spy upon through the windows’ grilles and slots, the two protagonists of the narrative, a beautiful restless woman and a sick bed-ridden man, share their common but in no way idyllic life. The nature of their rela-tionship is undefined and ambiguous, as together they fall into a world between fantasy and reality, where fear, anger, illusion, disgust, and wonder, interchange obsessively in a frantic psychological twist. They are “The Beauty and the Beast”, but with the absence of Love.

Departing from material records of the early co-lonial “scientific expeditions” and “taming cam-paigns” led by the French colonizers in North Africa, the story follows a community of young nomads and wanderers as they form an imagined utopian society in response to imperialist rule. Re-enactments, improvisations, and interviews performed and conducted with the inhabitants of Algiers, Kythira Island, and the Prosfygika commu-nity in Athens, inform this work as instances of al-ternative temporality and autonomous space that reflects on the displacement and re-appropriation of the telling of history and re-activates memories as resistance strategies.

35-year-old Anna lives alone in her big family house. She is addicted to Cosmic Candy, her favourite sweet since child-hood. She loves her job at the supermarket, her Fit ’n’ Wit exercise equipment, and anything that helps her avoid panic attacks. Persa, the 10-year-old neighbour, is bound to shat-ter her solitude, when she appears at Anna’s doorstep asking for help because her father has mysteriously disappeared. Trying to solve the mystery of the missing dad, Anna and Persa will go through several trials and tribulations. They will find themselves in the most improbable situations; from a school full of children playing the heroes of the 19th century Greek Revolution to the most dense forests, where one can come across a life-sized candy that speaks human! The un-expected return of Persa’s father brings their escapade to an abrupt end that finds Anna a totally different person.

A cinematic essay that combines documentary, fiction and philosophical contemplation on the subject of the paradoxical interplay between the cultures of the European North and South, with the camera performing continual back-and-forth movements between Germany and Greece. Ethnog-raphy and historiography, culture and everyday life, political and personal experience, all come together forming new references, in the course of what constitutes a journey through the labyrinth of recent European history.

“Dolphin Man” tells the life story of Jacques May-ol, the greatest free-diver in recorded history, whose life became the inspiration for Luc Besson’s cult-movie “Le Grand Bleu”. It draws us into May-ol’s world, capturing his compelling journey from Japan to Europe, North America and India, while immersing viewers into the sensory and transfor-mative experience of free-diving. The film weaves together stunning contemporary underwater pho-tography of the world’s leading free-divers with intimate testimonies of Mayol’s closest friends and family and rare film archive.
