EDUCATION IN FAITH Term 2 Catholic Social Teaching Focus: Solidarity & Preferential Option for the Poor Scripture Focus: Mark 12:31- You shall love your neighbor as yourself

Beginning 14th May, we celebrate Family Week. It is a time for us to reflect on our own families and the vital role families play in enriching and supporting our personal growth. It is an opportunity to appreciate and cherish the meaning of family and to make the most of family life. Made in the image of God, humans are social beings. It is within the family that we first learn to build loving connections with others, based on the deep knowledge that we are loved. Sometimes these ideal relationships are absent, or they break down. At these times the Christian community needs to rally around to support the individuals and the family to rebuild deeper, more nourishing relationships. It is here that the partnership between CatholicCare and Catholic schools and parishes can be most active. For this reason, after consultation with many schools, CatholicCare’s theme for Family Week 2018 is Building Connections; Growing Together. Strengthening relationships in a family helps all members to come closer together and allows them to work through difficult times in a positive way. When children have positive and strong relationships with their family, this also helps them in other aspects of their life - whether that’s in their relationships with friends and the community, or when dealing with a crisis outside of family life.

Catholic Social Teachings This term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teachings of Solidarity and Preferential Option for the Poor. Everyone belongs to one human family, regardless of their national, religious, ethnic, economic, political and ideological differences. Everyone has an obligation to promote the rights and development of all peoples across communities, nations, and the world, irrespective of national boundaries. Caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eyes.

This term, the Sports Captains have organised a fun activity for the whole school to take part in. The House Pets Competition is an activity for everyone where you have to take a photo of your pet dressed in your house colours and then bring the photo to school. We will display all of the photos in the windows of the old staff room. Then you vote for your favourite by getting a sticky note from your teacher and write down the pet’s name, owner’s name and the house colour. In Week 6 you will get a piece of paper to write your vote on from your teacher and the sport captains will tally up the scores and announce the winners at assembly in Week 7.

Who: Anyone in the school can enter, but only 1 entry per family When: Term 2, weeks 3-6. You have to hand your photo in between week 3 and week 5. What you need: A pet, OLA or teddy dressed in colours, take a photo and then bring that photo to school with your family name, pet name and house colour written on the back.

CAPTAINS VISIT TO THE CHELTENHAM RSL ANZAC DAY EVE

The school captains lay down a wreath for those we remember on Anzac Day on behalf of the OLA community.

Last Tuesday the school captains went to Cheltenham RSL. We went to see all the war memorials there. It was really interesting to see all the soldiers that fought in WW1. There were chairs set up for the dawn service. We laid our wreath from the school in front of the metal list of all the soldiers that died. Amelia G 6NC

On Tuesday the 24th of April the school captains went to the Cheltenham RSL. We went to the RSL so that we could lay our school wreath. We chose a part where there were plaques of different wars. Some information on the plaque was how many people died, or were taken prison. We also got to look at all different plaques that had different names and other things to remember about the soldiers.
