Bruce Lee was never a professional boxer

although he did ght throughout high school

and was an avid student o boxing during his

adult lie. Because his jeet kune do was greatly infuenced

by the ghting styles he studied, his interest in boxing

leads to a question: Just how good was Lee as a boxer? His skill and prowess as a martial artist are well-

known. The manner in which he took over the direction

o his second lm and revolutionized the way the ghts

were presented in the Mandarin pictures is a matter o

record. But theres a vocal minority who say Lee wasnt a

particularly skilled ghter that he could choreograph

a ght or the screen but that when it came to applying

techniques in real ghting situations, he was a wash. To

reute these claims, it seems that Lees skill as a boxer

    becomes a crucial point.

Its no secret that Lee scrutinized old lms o amous

boxers, integrating the moves into his own method o

ghting. One o his avorite ghters was Muhammad

Ali, who in Lees opinion developed the most intricate

patterns o movement. Knowing what Lee thought o

Ali gives us a glimpse o how he might have interjected

some o Alis prowess into his ghting, but how does

Alis opinion o Lee t the man who copied some o the

boxers style? In a brie interview, the question was put

to Ali, and this is what he had to say:

I understand he watched some o my ght lms. You

know, I dont think hed use too much o that boxing

stu in real lie. I saw him in a karate movie, but I know

that stu is just acting. Its colorul and good showman-

ship, and i I were a karate man, Id want to be just like

those guys in the movies, tackling 25 guys and making

them all scatter. All that action makes you want to ght,

but he wouldnt do that in real lie. Watching real karate

ghts is not like what you see in the movies, where a guy

jumps in and does some superhuman stunts. Thats the

movies, not real lie.The mystique o Lee has permeated the martial arts

like nothing beore or since. Karate champion Joe Lewis,

who knew Lee or many years, has a mellow opinion o

    him.

In the beginning, Lewis says, Bruce and I became

riends, and we had some dierences. Later, we put

those dierences aside and resumed our riendship. All

anyone can say about him is that he was a great theorist

and his theories work very well. But then, o course, is the

act that Bruce never ought in competition, so you cant

really tell how he would have done.

I think he would have made a relatively good ghter

because o his speed. He could have been a good eath-

erweight or lightweight, rated one or two in the ranks.

But then he wouldve been obscure because most othe publics interest is ocused on the heavier weights.

The best one can do, now that Lee is no longer here

to demonstrate his skill, is to build a case through those

who knew and worked with him. Two o his associates

who are qualied to shed some light on his ghting abil-

ity are Dan lnosanto and Richard Bustillo.

Inosanto and Bustillo met Lee in 1966 while he was

doing The Green Hornet TV series. Once they became

riends, Lee introduced them to jeet kune do. They grew

under his guidance and soon became instructors. Both

men have the highest respect or Lees ghting ability,

but well let them speak or themselves.

INOSANTO: We used to go to his house on Wednes-

days. We started o there, and weve been at it ever

since. About that time, Bruce was beginning to develop

his collection o boxing lms. He had one o the biggest

    collections in the country.

BUSTILLO: The way Bruce used to analyze those

lms we could only take it or a couple o hours, but

Bruce could sit there or eight or 10 hours and still show

the same interest and enthusiasm he showed in the rst

ve minutes. Hed go over and over those ght lms,

and he could imitate any o the ghters he was watch-

ing. The Ali shufe, the Sharkey roll, Sugar Rays bob and

weave, the Brown Bombers six-inch punch, Kid Gavilans

bolo punch and any others that caught his trained eye.

INOSANTO: Muhammad Ali was probably his avor-

ite ghter, but Bruce took something rom everybody. He liked Alis ootwork and admired his outside ghting.

He liked Marcianos short punches. He used to study all

the knockout punches o Joe Louis.

    BUSTILLO:Boxing, Western encing and wrestling

Bruce Lee studied them all. In each art was a kernel o

the truth he was trying to demonstrate. The totality is

    Bruces art.

INOSANTO: He had to know the an-

swers. When anyone really searches or the

truth as he did, he begins to see all acets.

He was able to see all, to see the totality.

BUSTILLO:The deeper he studied, themore involved he got, the more scientic he

became. Everything he ound out, he always

asked himsel this question: How or why? I

he saw a let lead in a ght lm, hed turn

his back to the screen and watch through

a mirror. That would show him how the

right lead should look how and when it

    should be thrown.

INOSANTO: He always asked, Why is it

done this way? The why led him to more

questions and in turn to more answers.

Ninety percent o the people in the martial

arts dont ask why. I they happen to study

with a guy in their neighborhood, they take

what he presents as the truth. Its a part o

the truth, but its not the whole truth.

We never questioned our instructor. I he

told us to stand on our heads, wed do it

thats the classical approach. But Bruce Lee

was always questioning. Its not that he em-

braced Western boxing completely. He elt

there were many faws in boxing, too. But he

also elt that out o all the arts in the hand

range, boxing had more truth than, lets say,

karate. Not that karate was all faws he

saw the truth in karate, too. But he would

take the best o everything. He was devel-

    oping the complete martial art.

Actually, I didnt think too highly o box-

ing beore I met Bruce. Id boxed some atthe Y, but I didnt appreciate the art. Bruce

had been the interschool boxing champion

while he was in high school in Hong Kong.

Out o 15 schools, he was No. 1. He knew

    how eective boxing could be.

    BUSTILLO:Theres a good reason why

most people dont have any regard or box-

ing today because todays ghters are all

courage and guts. Theres no skill and class. Theres no

scientic moves, clever punches, plan o attack or strat-

egy. Today, the guy who opens the astest and hits the

hardest is the guy who wins. Probably, Ali is one o the

very ew real scientic boxers let.

INOSANTO: Most people arent aware o it, but Bruce

was very into boxing. Scientic boxing. He taught boxing

at his school. Even with this interest in boxing, however,

he never went to the ghts. But he did watch the ghts

    on TV whenever he could.

His theory o training wasthrough sel-discovery. Hed

    spar with anybody he could.

    All his technique was derived

    through sel-discovery. He used

to call it discovering the source

    o your ignorance. Anybody

who would visit him, hed spar

    with them with or without

    the gloves.

    BUSTILLO: Bruce would

probably have gone to the box-

ing gyms around here, but as I

    said, he liked scientic boxing.

The majority o the guys at the

    gyms are not schooled; theyre

not aware o what they should

    be looking or when sparring

or what they should be trying

    to accomplish. Bruce had the

    interest, the dedication, the

    ready-willing-and-able attitude

to be a top world contender.

    INOSANTO: People ask,

Why, i he had this interest in

    boxing, didnt he become a

    proessional ghter? Boxing

was not a totality just as

wrestling and karate are not to-

talities. For Bruce to have goneinto proessional boxing would

be like asking a chess cham-

pion to participate in a check-

    ers tournament. Its a dierent

    realm. Boxing wasnt his game.

    Although he was an excellent

boxer and he elt there was a

lot o merit in it, there were still

    some things wrong with the

art. Theres more slugging, and youve got to push more

with your gloves. Boxing, he elt, was over-daring, where-

as he ound karate to be overprotective.

BUSTILLO:Thats how he developed jeet kune do.

He put all the arts together. Kicking distance, he taught, comes rst. You have the longest reach with your eet.

Close the kicking range, and youre in hand distance.

Thats where the boxing comes in. All the moves that are

used in boxing would be good in JKD, along with the

hand, arm and elbow moves that are used in gung fu.

Ater hand range, wrestling or judo comes in.

INOSANTO: And thats important. It is easier to train

a boxer to kick or at least to counter a kick than it

is to train a karateka to box. Within six months, a boxer

would do well against most people schooled in karate.

Wrestlers are in tremendous condition. Proessional

wrestling is a show, but dont underestimate the skill o

the proessional wrestler. Theyre in tremendous condi-

tion they have to be to put on a show like that. And

those holds are not ake; theyre real. Id put my money on

a proessional wrestler against someone schooled in ka-

rate. There are a lot o weaknesses in karate. Bruce elt that

there are a lot o talented people in karate; what were

trying to say is that a lot o them are not aware o the di-

erent kinds o ghting conditions they might come up

against. Theyve never been exposed to what it s like.

BUSTILLO: Thats why Bruce was something new

and dierent in the martial arts. He always wanted to

know everything, to incorporate dierent elements into

his ghting style. I like to say he was like Jonathan Liv-

ingston Seagull; he always wanted to go one step more

in nding out about the martial arts. The two vehicles oBruce Lee were his training and reading. The walls o his

oce were lled with books on the martial arts.

INOSANTO: Getting back to the original question,

theres no doubt in my mind that i Bruce Lee had gone

into pro boxing, he could easily have ranked in the top

three in the lightweight division or junior-welterweight

division. When he rst came to Los Angeles, he weighed

about 150 pounds on a 5-oot-7-inch rame. When he

went back to Hong Kong, he was down to 126, and he

packed almost unbelievable power behind that weight.

But Bruce was rst a martial artist, and he went out o

his way to prove that he really had a method o ght-

ing, that it was as disciplined and more scientic than

the older, classical arts. Jeet kune do is a very elusive

term because it is more than boxing. We use the eet,

the hands and grappling. Bruce said: Theres a beauty in

everything. The name is insignicant. Why dont they just

give one name to all the arts and call it ghting? The

human name or anything is the most corrupt orm. Jeet

kune do is just a name, and i you do not like that name,

    then let it be dropped.

So there you have it rom two o the Little Dragons closest associates. Lee sought the truth in creating a truly eec-

tive ghting orm. He studied and mastered all the arts, and he had a special regard or boxing because o the truth that

boxing presented in a total ghting scheme. And he was a good boxer, maybe even a great boxer. A high-school boxing

champion, he continued to study the art and develop his skills. And he combined his knowledge and talent into a new

    and comprehensive ghting art.

But its interesting to speculate on this: I Lee had gone into the ring proessionally, what would have happened?

One can imagine that initially his presence would have brought more respect and consideration or the lighter weight

classications; that as an attraction, he would have rivaled Ali; and that his infuence would have brought a rebirth to a

    more scientic orm o boxing.
