The exhibit traces the chronological development of the air mails from the early commercial flights to the advent of zone rates introduced in late 1948.During 1919 and 1920 only one-off trial or demonstration flights wereundertaken ans as such are outside the scope of this exhibit, however, three of these pioneer flights are illustrated in the display as forerunners. In early 1921 two regular internal airmail routes were established, but operationsceased in July of that year when the Postal Authorities deemed them to be uneconomical. Thus from mid1921until early 1929, no commercial internal air mail services were available. Similarly, the first trulycommercial air mail connecting New Zealand to the outside world was noy until 1937, prior to this all overseas airmail was transported to either Australia or North America by sea for onward air transportation. The chronology is broken with the "Horseshoe Route" which commenced in June 1940 and is shown together forcompleteness. The display shows the growth in the use of mail carried by air, the routes that were developed, the rate structures that evolved and other outside influences which dictated the development of the domestic andexternal air mail services as known today. Interest is added with correspondence during periods of nationaldisasters such as earthquakes, floods and similar emergencies, together with instructional, official postaldocuments, markings including "Jusqu'a" and other handstruck cachets, manuscript markings andsuperscriptions. Much of the detailed information, some of it unpublished to date, is the direct result ofpersonal and active ongoing research by the exhibitor.
