The minister made this state- ment in response to the question of MP Abdullah Al-Mayouf who demanded for information on the allegation that the children’s wel- fare house matrons assaulted one of their teenaged wards. She ex- plained the ward wanted a packet of cigarette and when his request was rejected, he insulted and threatened one of the matrons so the other matrons interfered to calm the situation. Al-Subaih added, “None of the matrons assaulted the ward in question. They did nothing physi- cal that would have caused bruises as the teenager alleged. A com- mittee has been formed to conduct investigations internally.” She went on to say the teen- ager is one of the unstable cases, indicating that in the past, he threatened the former matrons, pointed a knife at a driver in the welfare home’s guest house and burnt some of the driver’s hair. However, he has yet to be re- ferred to the juvenile court and he reported to the Operations Unit that the matrons assaulted him, so a case was filed at Salmiya Police Station. Investigation is still ongoing, the minister added. Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Bader Al-Essa recently concluded the on-the-spot assessment of some schools to ascertain the level of readiness for the next session. His visit covered 10 schools in Sabah Al-Ahmad and Umm Al-Hayman in Ah- madi Educational Zone. His visit to those schools contrib- uted in hastening the conclu- sion of maintenance activities of services and air conditioners prior to the date of resumption. Meanwhile, a recent report issued by the Planning Depart- ment of Ministry of Education concerning 2015/2016 academic year indicates that 661,552 male and female students were regis- tered in all basic levels of educa- tion. The number of teachers in 1,450 schools was 83,468 and those schools had 25,127 classes. This indicates that the number of students in 2015/2016 aca- demic year was higher by 14,314 when compared to 2014/2015 academic year while the number of teachers increased by 2,064, and 13 schools with 560 classes were added. Meanwhile, on the second day of Eid Al-Adha, the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Bader Al-Essa conducted an inspection tour on ten schools in Sabah Al-Ahmad and Umm Hay- man areas which are affiliated to Ahmadi Educational Zone. In a press statement, Dr Al-Essa explained that some observations were made of the services and equipment in the schools that he visited. These observations have been reported to the director of Ahmadi Educational Zone and the officials of these schools so that necessary work in that regard can be carried out as soon as possible. He stressed that such type of tours are aimed to expedite the necessary work that are required to completed prior to the start of the new academic year. Al-Essa affirmed that such in- spection tours will continue in or- der to ensure all necessary details concerned with schools have been checked and worked on prior to the start of the new school year.
