~ We Gather to Worship ~

L: This is a new day the Lord is making! P: Let us worship God!

As the various Christian traditions are named, bring into your awareness those you know who identify with these traditions and be grateful for them.

If you personally have in the past or presently claim one or more of these traditions as your own, feel free to simply raise a hand, and be grateful.

All sing: We are one in the Spirit, We are one in the Lord; We are one in the Spirit, We are One in the Lord;

And we pray that all unity may one day be restored; And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love;

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

Opening Prayer Jesus prayed that we might be one. One in spirit … One in mission … In union and

communion with each other and with God. Today, we confess our fumblings and failures in accomplishing unity, as we set aside yet another day to remind ourselves of the task. On this World Communion Sunday, give us eyes to recognize God’s

reflection in the eyes of people everywhere. Give us a mind to accept and celebrate our differences. Give us a heart big enough to love God’s children everywhere.

We thank you for setting a table with space enough for us all! Amen.

Response We Come To Your Feast Michael Joncas All are invited to sing the refrain each time it occurs

Solo: We place upon Your table a gleaming cloth of white; the weaving of our stories, The fabric of our lives; the dreams of those before us, the ancient hopeful cries, the promise of

our future; our needing and our nurture, lie here before our eyes. Refrain - All

We place upon Your table humble loaves of bread; the gift of field and hillside, the grain by which we're fed; we come to taste the presence of Him on whom we feed,

to strengthen and connect us, to challenge and correct us, to love in word and deed Refrain - All

We place upon Your table a simple cup of wine; the fruit of human labor, the gift of sun and vine; we come to taste the presence of Him we claim as Lord,

His coming and His living, His leading and His giving, His love in cup outpoured. Refrain - All

We gather round Your table, we pause within our quest; we sit beside our neighbors, we name the stranger guest. The feast is spread before us; You bid us come and dine;

in blessing we uncover, in sharing we discover Your substance and Your sign. Refrain All

Epistle Lesson 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 Common English Bible

17 Now I don’t praise you as I give the following instruction because when you meet together, it does more harm than good. 18 First of all, when you meet together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it.

19 It’s necessary that there are groups among you, to make it clear who is genuine. 20 So when you get together in one place, it isn’t to eat the Lord’s meal. 21 Each of you goes ahead and eats a private meal. One person goes hungry while another is drunk. 22 Don’t you have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on God’s churches and humiliate those who have nothing? What can I say to you? Will I praise you? No, I don’t praise you in this.

23 I received a tradition from the Lord, which I also handed on to you: on the night on which he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread. 24 After giving thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this to remember me.” 25 He did the same thing with the cup, after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Every time you drink it, do this to remember me.” 26 Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you broadcast the death of the Lord until he comes.

27 This is why those who eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord inappropriately will be guilty of the Lord’s body and blood. 28 Each individual should test himself or herself, and eat from the bread and drink from the cup in that way. 29 Those who eat and drink without correctly understanding the body are eating and drinking their own judgment. 30 Because of this, many of you are weak and sick, and quite a few have died. 31 But if we had judged ourselves, we wouldn’t be judged. 32 However, we are disciplined by the Lord when we are judged so that we won’t be judged and condemned along with the whole world.

33 For these reasons, my brothers and sisters, when you get together to eat, wait for each other. 34 If some of you are hungry, they should eat at home so that getting together doesn’t lead to judgment. I will give directions about the other things when I come.

L: The Word of God for the People of God P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon A Tradition That Matters Becky Matheny

Service of the Table ~ World Communion Sunday

World Communion Sunday is a time for remembering that around the globe — in different languages, with different traditions and customs, and in various forms of

liturgy — services around the Table are celebrated throughout Christendom.

At its best, World Communion Sunday helps open our eyes to the worldwide nature of Christianity, and might be the entry point to an international perspective that connects

us globally in the bonds of love and justice. There is important work to be done with regard to cultural understanding and mission, and World Communion Sunday can be

the spark that creates ongoing global concern within communities of faith.

Ours is the task of building up the body, not breaking it down. At the Table, may we be reminded that conversations that pit one against another,

comments that drive a wedge between one church and another, systems that separate people or communities from others,

are contrary to God’s plan and purpose. People who undermine the dignity of others, congregations that do everything

to succeed to the point of undermining the ministry of another, denominations or publications that seek to discredit others, are not doing God’s work.

We are at our best when we approach the table as guest, allowing our bodies and spirits to be nourished and our thirst quenched.

From the table we go into a hungry and thirsty world to be bread and wine for others.
