BOOK FAIR AND READING

Seabrook PS parents and children are invited to visit the Book Fair being held in the library from Monday 18th November until the 22nd. It is a great opportunity to promote reading and literature in the family and perhaps pick up some gifts for Christmas. Parents may visit the book fair at any time during school hours in addition to the morning and afternoon open times. We want to strongly recommend that all our children continue their reading over the holidays. Research has shown that many children’s reading levels slip over the summer break so keeping up good habits over the break will give your child an advantage when starting their new class in 2020. Having a supply of reading material will assist with this.

WORKING BEE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 22Please come to our working bee next Friday afternoon. This is a chance for the children to support their school by taking on some tasks in their classrooms and in the grounds in general. Children stay after school and work with teachers and or parents when they arrive to collect them for the day. We’d like to see everyone helping in a small way. Please meet in the courtyard and sign in for the afternoon.

ARE YOU LEAVING THE AREA?Please contact the office in writing letting us know if your child/children will not be joining us in 2020. This information helps us with our planning for 2020.The form is located on page 6 or you may like to forward a letter or use the school email [email protected] lists are in the process of being developed now.

BOOKLISTS FOR 2020These will be sent home with your child later this week. Families have until February 3 to pay for student individual book packs and until the end of term 2 to pay the remaining fees.

REBEL SPORTIf you are shopping for sporting goods please consider the REBEL sports store at the Point Cook Town Centre. Our school has been able to purchase over $1000.00 worth of sporting equipment thanks to credits accrued when families have shopped there. Mr Ganley and Mr Trott are always thankful when they can purchase new equipment and replace old.

LOCKDOWN DRILLA lockdown drill was executed yesterday as part of our emergency management planning procedures. It was pleasing to see the way the students understood the process and performed the drill responsibly.

UNIFORM NEWSWarmer weather is coming and this is the time many children misplace their jumpers. A timely reminder to parents to make sure your child/ren’s jumpers are clearly marked. It is impossible to help a child find their lost jumper if it is un-named. Thank you.

MOBILE PHONE BAN 2020Parents may be aware through the media that the Education minister has banned mobile phones in all students in Victorian state and secondary schools from term one next year. Seabrook is working on the policy to be enacted day one next year. Students will be required to hand their phones to the classroom teachers at the beginning of the day and have them returned before hometime. This government directive is to help reduce distraction, tackle cyber bullying and improve learning outcomes for all children.

Have a great week ahead.

On Monday the 11th of November, Seabrook Primary School held our Remembrance Day ceremony in the courtyard. Remembrance Day is held to commemorate all men and women who have served our country. Students learnt about the significance of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices that have been made by all service men and women since World War I.

It was wonderful to have Former Petty Officer Ray Cooper, who served on HMA Ships Melbourne and Newcastle speak to the school. Thanks for coming to Seabrook to speak at our ceremony.

The grade 5 students hosted the event. Mila, Nihal, Kiara, Ruby, Cooper, Ameena, Tajwaar, Yashi, Amber, Seril, Sam and Tanisi all showed they are great communicators and were risk-takers when presenting at our whole school ceremony. Congratulations to you all!

Prep Werribee Zoo Excursion

Wednesday 30th October saw the prep students go off on their very first excursion to the Werribee Zoo. This excursion linked to our fifth Inquiry about Endangered Animals. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day to go out on an adventure.

The students were very eager and excited to travel on a large bus to the zoo and once we arrived, we explored lots of different animals and were able to see the different habitats that they live in.

We saw zebras, giraffes, gorillas, lion, rhinos, cheetahs, kangaroos, emus and lots of other animals too. Even after so much walking, the students were still full of energy at the end of the day as they had so much fun at the zoo learning about all the different animals.

A special thank you to the prep students, prep teachers and the volunteers who helped us on the day. It was a wonderful day for the prep students, teachers and parents.

LEARNING WITH CONFIDENCE

This week the Grade One classes have been learning all about the 5 Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Repurpose as part of our inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’. To deepen our understanding of our responsibility to care for the environment, we had a visitor from Hobson’s Bay Libraries to help explain how we can use the 5 Rs in our everyday life. We learnt about refusing single use plastic bags, buying a big tub of yoghurt instead of many little ones and making a bag out of an old t-shirt! Now that we have a better understanding of how our actions affect the environment, there are some changes we are going to make!

“I am going to reduce the amount of plastic I buy at the shops.” - Prarthana - 1JG “I am going to bring my own cup for hot chocolate.” - Leona - 1KF “Every day I am going to pick up rubbish at the park.” - Marcus -1GV “I am going to repair some of my toys if they are broken.” Amaira -1ER A huge thank you to Mel Brown for taking the time to teach us about the steps to take before recycling!

LEARNING WITH CONFIDENCE

On the 6th to the 9th of November 2019 Grade 3KM went to Phillip Island Adventure Resort for camp. This camp was related to our current inquiry ‘Individuals and groups have the responsibility to follow rules and laws for a peaceful co-existence’. Below are some reflections from students tin 3KM that went to camp.

The camp was related to our inquiry because the penguins came up on the beach to their burrows together so that they wouldn’t be vulnerable to prey. - Justina

We had a peaceful co-existence at camp because there were new people in our cabins from other classes, so we needed to cooperate. - Avni

The camp was connected to our current inquiry because be used teamwork for the canoeing and raft making. The inquiry was about being friendly towards others and treating them how you want to be treated. - Aarav

The camp helped us to build stronger relationships with others by using communication, this is the key to success. - Feronia

I found out camp was connected to our inquiry because we had to work together in a peaceful way. Our raft floated and made it back to the shore. - Mali

The camp allowed us to be more independent and solve conflicts ourselves. Some of the students weren’t going to sleep so we spoke to them about the effect of not getting enough sleep. - Jett

I now know the camp to Phillip Island made us more independent because we were in our own cabins without any adults. We had to learn how to cooperate with each other and solve problems by ourselves. - Adya

Our inquiry was related to the camp because when we were doing the activities, they would make us calm and we could release our stress. - Wania

Everyone worked hard on the camp because when my group and I made the raft, everyone tried to make it sturdy so that it wouldn’t fall apart and sink in the lake. - Abi

LEARNING WITH CONFIDENCE

The main point of the camp was that we should work together, and it doesn’t matter how different we are, we still have a relationship. - Boubacar

I found out that you needed help when you did raft making and canoeing. Helping each other during these activities makes them easier because you have cooperated with your group. - Aiden

I found out that we were making the raft, we all had to distribute our weight on all of the sides so that we wouldn’t sink. We worked together and we achieve what we had to do. - Meghna

I now know that when you go canoeing you have to talk to each other and cooperate so that your partner knows where you want to go. - Lachlan

I found out the camp was related to the inquiry because when we were in our groups there were other people from different classes so that you could get along with them. - Shravya

I found out that the camp was related to our inquiry because we were being peaceful to one another and helping each other. An example was when we worked together to build a raft. - Ryan

At the grade three camp the students cooperated by making rafts together. Students helped each other tie rope together and put the raft into the water. - Regan

The camp was related to the inquiry because we worked together to complete activities such as canoeing and raft making. We used oars and directions for the canoeing. Rope and wood tied together was used for the rafting. - Julian

The camp was related to our inquiry because you have to follow the rules, so no-one gets hurt. - Ethan

I found out that at camp you needed to use teamwork. In raft making, if you didn’t work together the raft might break into pieces like ours did. - Dhvanit

The Frog Habitat

If you have wondered about the newly fenced of area near the Mintaro Way carpark. Wonder no more. This space is being developed into a habitat garden using indigenous plants. This will provide habitat for local wildlife species such as butterflies, lady beetles, frogs, lizards and geckos etc.

The idea for the frog bog as it was first known, came about when the Sustainable committee consisting of Helen Takano, Simon Luthi Jon Brown and Renee Easson who wanted to create more diversity in the school environment. After receiving an email, I met with Helen and a day was set for the construction of the Frog Bog. This took two days with the use of a back hoe to dig out the main area and a lot of people power to hand dig out the surrounding area. The soil that was dug out from the main area was meant to be used as back fill after the liner went down however this could not be used due to the amount of grass weed it contained. Clean fill was brought in to back fill the frog bog. The granite sand paths were made this completed the frog habitat.

Over the next few months the bog area was planted out with indigenous plants by Simon Luthi leadership group and myself. I

further maintained the frog bog planting and weeding as the clean fill wasn’t as clean as was first anticipated. There was also an issue with the slope on the bog area. This was corrected by Joe and myself using the liner to create a bun to hold the water in on the south side. Because of the evaporation rate the bog area dried out quite rapidly the area would be ok for the habitat however to have water all year round a small pond was built at the north end. Plants were placed in the pond and a couple of frogs were released ,this looked great for a couple of days.

It was decided a fence around the habitat garden was needed to separate this area from the rest of the school, creating a sanctuary. The design was chosen, I went about sourcing the materials as cheaply as possible I was given the name of a fencer who was able to give the school thirty metres of used hardwood fencing free, perfect! Using the fencing and the posts from the dismantled playground Barry and Joe built all the panels that were needed to build the fence. It took a day to erect the fence using a whole digger, lots of concrete and people power.

The Frog Habitat

The frog habitat has its own water source from tanks near the buildings on Mintaro Way. Now with a tap inside the encloser making it more sustainable and easier to water when needed. A reclaimed seat has been repaired by Barry and is now being used frequently by the children, there will be more seats to come. We had our first working bee at the bog earlier this year where parents planted shrubs and spread mulch that was removed from the playground these plants are doing ok. It is still being planted and maintained and the aim is for a tranquil bush setting that will be a quite place for wildlife and all to enjoy.

There have been some amazing moments at the frog bog while Joe and I were working two children came in and sat on some rocks, opposite us asking, what we were doing. I said “Building a platform for you children to see the frogs better”. “I’ve never seen a frog,” one of the children said. Just then a frog started swimming along the edge of the pond then hopped up between where the children were sitting and hopped into the grassy habitat., “Look” I said, “A frog! What do you say now?” The children were so excited they went off to tell their class friends. This also happened when I was filling the pond in front of some other children, this time four frogs started swimming around the pond the children wanted to name them all.

Over time the frog habitat will change from season to season as plants establish and wildlife take up residency. My hope is for children to learn to appreciate and discover the wonders that this place has to offer.

I would like to acknowledge all who were involved in establishing the frog bog Barry Joyce, Joe Camelleri , the sustainable team Renee Easson, Jon Brown, Simon Luthi who has left the school, Helen Takano and Doug her husband who have also left the school, Nick Young who helped drill the holes and worked on the fence, all the office staff for their support, Meg Collier who had a vision for a habitat garden those years ago and the Principal Sue Lee for your support and encouragement. If I have missed anyone please accept my apologies.

The Mountain Pygmy Possum, is critically endangered!

There are less than 2000 left in the wild and they need our help to survive. Danica-Jade (1KF), with the support of Seabrook Primary School is working with Zoos Victoria to help save these Australian marsupials from extinction.

If you can spare some silver coins for our pocket sized friends please place them in the dedicated containers in each classroom.

The room who raise the most money will receive a book voucher for their class, kindly donated by Dymocks Point Cook. Thank you for your support

Can You Lend a Hand?

Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, but for some families, they need help. The Salvation Army helps people in need, but they also need our help. That’s why Brianna and myself (Narah) are doing a donation called cans for Christmas.

The donation “Cans for Christmas” is to collect canned items to give to families that need help. This will run from Monday 18th of November to Thursday 19 of December. There will be one box at the office and another in room 13 for collection of canned goods.

Thank you for your participation

School banking is on Thursday

Congratulations to the following students who have received a certificate recently:

Silver 20 deposits: Krishna V, Andrew W, Eric Y Gold 30 deposits: Sahana A, Bailey B, Clair C, Matthew L, Indie P, Jet

The final school banking day for this year will be 28 November 2019. Please submit any reward orders by this date to guarantee they will arrive this year. Please note that any silver tokens earned this year will carry over to next year.

For Grade 6 students: any grade 6 students who have ever participated in school banking can have their yellow school banking wallet exchanged for a cool black wallet, this is as thanks for supporting our school. Please hand in the yellow school banking wallet on Thursdays to have it exchanged. Also note any school banking tokens earned previously do not expire. This is a good opportunity for grade 6 students to redeem rewards before the end of the year. Any graduating students with younger siblings still attending Seabrook Primary School are welcome to continue school banking next year. Please contact us if you have any queries.

Regular saving is an important habit to get into, whether you are saving a little or a lot.
