Rebel baseball has challenging season with nine seniors By Rita “Peat” Harris Sports Correspondent Loaded with experience and upper classmen, the Casey Rebel baseball team begins their first season under Head Coach Gregory Ham- mond this week. Hammond comes from the dugout of the 2011 state champs of Central Hardin where he was an assistant coach. He began working with the Rebels last fall dur- ing the off season and prac- tices went into full swing a month ago. “I’m senior dominated,” said Hammond, who has nine seniors, many of whom have seen varsity play since their freshman or sophomore year. The team is made up of 16 athletes. In addition to the se- nior leadership, the roster is rounded out with one junior, three sophomores and three freshmen. Logan Weddle and Daniel Bastin return to the field. The seniors earned the most put- outs and fewest errors from the outfield and infield re- spectively, in 2011. Returning as heavy hitters for the team are seniors Tyler Hayes and Jordan Sallee, who earned the most doubles and triples, re- spectively, last season. Hammond has arranged a steep schedule for his team in hopes that it will prep them for a better performance at tournament time. “We play some of the top teams in the state including the defending state champi- ons and twice (we’ll play) the state runner-up,” said Hammond.”I’ve got a chal- lenging season for us.” The team throws the first pitch of the season tomorrow (Thursday) at Clinton Coun- ty and immediately jumps into a schedule of two to four games a week for the remain- der of the spring. “I know the boys are excit- ed,” said Hammond. “They should be seasoned to play a tough schedule.” A new coach isn’t the only change for the team. The dia- mond and entire field area received a facelift during the off season as well. Casey County will host the district tournament this year and the facility is in top con- dition to do so with new bull pens, tarps, dugouts, side- walks and more. “It looks totally different,” said Hammond. “Thank you to (athletic director) Victor Black, (principal) Barry Lee and superintendent Linda Hatter and Kevin Stephens because they have gone above and beyond.” Hammond will be assisted by long time assistant coach Kevin Long. photo/CHRIS ZOLLNER Rebel Daniel Bastin takes a cut during a Rebel game last season. The roster is still in the works and the schedule is tentative for the 2012 season as their first meet is a couple of weeks away. Additionally, basketball and cheer athletes, who just finished their season about two weeks ago, are just joining the rest of the team this week. BOYS The running Rebels boys’ squad will look to fill a void on both the track and the field this season with the loss of two of their three 2011 state qualifiers. “I’ve really only got one returning,” said Willoughby, referring to junior field com- petitor Micah Smith. Smith is the team’s lone returning state qualifier from 2011 where he competed in the high jump and pole vault . The team graduated fellow pole vaulter and state medal- ist, Jordan Ellison, but Wil- loughby said he has a few athletes to potentially join Smith in the vault this year. The coach was not ready to commit any other athletes to field events with the season still a couple of weeks out. “We’ll probably be more field dominated,”said Wil- loughby, when it came to the outlook of running events this spring. The team lost their only state qualifier in a running event from last year, Joe Lee, to graduation. Willoughby is looking to the distance side of the house for most of his strength early in the season. “Blake Durham (who ran) cross country is just a fresh- man but he’s got a lot of ex- perience. Wesley Howard has been with the program for six years and he’s a distance run- ner,” said Willoughby. GIRLS The girls’ track and field team returns in nearly full strength with seven of last year’s state qualifiers return- ing. “I feel pretty confident about our girls’ team. We’ve got a lot returning from last year with the exception of our throwers,” said Willoughby. The team is looking to fill out the throwing events, an area where Casey has been strong under assistant coach Rex Rader. The team lost disc and shot put state quali- fier B.J. Hogue to graduation while Shauna Wardrip, who qualified in the disc, is not back this spring. Abby Meece returns to the shot put hoping to again qualify for the state meet in the event. Pole vaulters Shelby Stringer and Nicole Nagy re- turn with hopes to better last year’s performances. The pair took fourth and ninth in state respectively, in 2011. Willoughby is looking to newcomer freshman Kelsey Arthur to potentially excel in one or more field events in addition to her distance run- ning. While the practice sea- son is still early, Willoughby has yet to decide whether she’ll be competing in the long jump, triple jump or even possibly throwing. Casey’s relay teams look to be a force to be reckoned with as the state qualifying teams return and the potential to fill out the mile or two mile relays. “All of my state qualify- ing teams are returning,” said Willoughby, referring to the 4x100 and 4x200 meter re- lays. Jasmine Johnson, Laura Parris and Kaitlyn Carmicle run a leg of both relays while Tiara Cochran rounds out the 4x100 and Lakken Miller is the fourth leg of the 4x200. Willoughby said new fresh- man Tiara Sengkhamyong brings some middle distance talent to the track. He hopes to have her join sophomore Aubrey Buis and potentially Miller and Cochran to form a competitive 4x400 or 4x800 team. Carmicle will also compete in the hurdles where she qual- ified for state in the 100-me- ter hurdles last season. In addition to Rader coach- ing the throwers, Willoughby is assisted by Amanda Hatter as the middle school coach and Chris Arthur as the dis- tance coach. Coach: Chris Arthur, Amanda Hatter, Rex Rader Lady Rebel softball begins with new coach By Rita “Peat” Harris Sports Correspondent The Lady Rebel softball team will swing into action next week under the leadership of new coach Brook Shelton. Despite losing three girls to graduation last season, Shelton grew the roster from last year’s 13 to 18 and that growth did not come through incoming fresh- men only. “I actually do not have a lot of young girls that came up,” said Shelton. “I worked to re- cruit girls and met with the ones interested on several oc- casions.” The 18-girl roster is dominat- ed by upperclassmen, including seven seniors. Seniors Abby Buis, Shelby Henson, Leann King and Amber Vaughn return to the field from last season and are joined by Kristin Ellis, Paige Herren and Ashley Mc- Queary. Four juniors add to the upperclassmen along with two sophomores and five freshmen. Buis returns with last year’s top infield fielding percentage of 97 percent. Vaughn comes off last season with an outfield fielding percentage of 95 per- cent as well as having the most stolen bases at 13. Junior Raven Clements returns with last year’s best batting average. Sophomore Amber Wesley brings experi- ence from the pitcher’s mound where she pitched 107 innings last season and gained 106 strikeouts. Shelton said she is still mak- ing decisions on where her ath- letes are best suited to play on the field and positions are still being decided. The first game is next Thurs- day at Campbellsville and Shelton is ready to get the sea- son underway as she has been working with the team since last fall. “I think our schedule is going to be tough, especially for a new coach,” said Shelton. “I am ex- cited and looking forward to the season beginning next week. Since I am new to this district and region I am not sure what to think but, as always, I have very high expectations for my girls and expect them to play their hardest and do well.” Shelton, a former softball athlete from Adair County, is joined by assistant coach Angie McQueary as she takes on her first coaching position. Tennis teams ready for 2012 with experienced players returning By Rita “Peat” Harris Sports Correspondent The Casey County tennis program, which is coming off a 31-2 combined season, kicks off their season this week. The teams will host a double-header match against Wayne County Friday at home. GIRLS The girls’ tennis team moves into what could potentially be their best season yet. They are coming off a 14-2 season and lost only one senior to gradua- tion. “We have our (tournament) team coming back and we have some players who didn’t come back,” said interim Coach Jim Coffey. Coffey will stand in for Head Coach Tommy Wood, who is currently recovering from surgery. “We’re pretty solid from top to bottom,” said Coffey, com- menting that in addition to the experienced tournament players the team has several younger girls whom he expects to play throughout the season to further develop their skills. “Our focus is the team,” said Coffey, explaining whether a girl plays as the teams number one or number six seed. “No matter where you play (a win is) a point and it takes five (points) to win (the match),” said Coffey. The Lady Rebels are headed by two juniors, Allie Tinsley and Tylyn Leigh, both having tour- nament play experience from past years. Tinsley and return- ing sophomore Hayley Owens advanced to the state tourna- ment as a doubles team last sea- son and look to repeat. Also returning are Sarah Coffman, Chelsey Lynn, Tay- lor Monday, Madison Lee and Savannah Skipper. The team’s young newcomers are Amber Pierce and Laci Lee. Casey’s two losses in 2011 came at the hands of Mercer County, which won the 12th Re- gion Tournament. BOYS The boys’ tennis program heads into its 13th season under Head Coach Phil Williams. The team will look to continue the undefeated streak it began three seasons ago as well as contend for a fourth 12th Region title. The 11-person team is led by upperclassmen, all of whom have tournament experience. Leading the team are seniors Ryan Martin and Clay Cannon, who went 15-1 and 12-1, respec- tively, in singles play last season. Four juniors join them, Taylor Leigh, Hunter Pierce, Luke Sa- lyers and Skyler Wright. “They were the members who made up our championship team last year,” said Williams, noting the team’s loss of state qualifier, Brad Jeffries, who graduated. “I don’t really want to sell one (player) short over the other. The thing about tennis is, you’re as strong as your weakest link, if you have a weak link and hope- fully you don’t. You have to be strong from the top to bottom,” said Williams. Despite the experience of the upperclassmen, Williams is also focused on building future teams. Sophomores Trent Rogers and Justin Underwood round out the high school athletes. Luke Coff- man will join the team from the middle school while Luke John- son and Jackson Ponder come up from the elementary level. A variance in the singles and doubles play, as well as the play- ers seeding throughout the sea- son, is expected. “We play to our strengths and we have some players that are not only good singles play- ers but good doubles players as well,” said Williams. The team kicked off their sea- son yesterday against Pulaski County. Rebel baseball has challenging season with nine seniorsBy Rita “Peat” Harris

Sports Correspondent

Loaded with experience and upper classmen, the Casey Rebel baseball team begins their fi rst season under Head Coach Gregory Ham-mond this week.

Hammond comes from the dugout of the 2011 state champs of Central Hardin where he was an assistant coach. He began working with the Rebels last fall dur-ing the off season and prac-tices went into full swing a month ago.

“I’m senior dominated,” said Hammond, who has nine seniors, many of whom have seen varsity play since their freshman or sophomore year.

The team is made up of 16 athletes. In addition to the se-nior leadership, the roster is rounded out with one junior, three sophomores and three freshmen.

Logan Weddle and Daniel Bastin return to the fi eld. The seniors earned the most put-outs and fewest errors from the outfi eld and infi eld re-spectively, in 2011. Returning as heavy hitters for the team are seniors Tyler Hayes and Jordan Sallee, who earned the most doubles and triples, re-spectively, last season.

Hammond has arranged a steep schedule for his team in hopes that it will prep them

for a better performance at tournament time.

“We play some of the top teams in the state including the defending state champi-ons and twice (we’ll play) the state runner-up,” said Hammond.”I’ve got a chal-lenging season for us.”

The team throws the fi rst pitch of the season tomorrow (Thursday) at Clinton Coun-ty and immediately jumps into a schedule of two to four games a week for the remain-der of the spring.

“I know the boys are excit-ed,” said Hammond. “They should be seasoned to play a tough schedule.”

A new coach isn’t the only change for the team. The dia-mond and entire fi eld area received a facelift during the off season as well.

Casey County will host the district tournament this year and the facility is in top con-dition to do so with new bull pens, tarps, dugouts, side-walks and more.

“It looks totally different,” said Hammond. “Thank you to (athletic director) Victor Black, (principal) Barry Lee and superintendent Linda Hatter and Kevin Stephens because they have gone above and beyond.”

Hammond will be assisted by long time assistant coach Kevin Long.

Casey County Rebel and Lady Rebel trackers to begin season March 27By Rita “Peat” Harris

Sports Correspondent

Practices for the Casey County boys’ and girls’ track team got underway last week

under head coach Matt Wil-loughby. The roster is still in the works and the schedule is tentative for the 2012 season as their fi rst meet is a couple of weeks away. Additionally,

basketball and cheer athletes, who just fi nished their season about two weeks ago, are just joining the rest of the team this week.

BOYSThe running Rebels boys’

squad will look to fi ll a void on both the track and the fi eld this season with the loss of two of their three 2011 state qualifi ers.

“I’ve really only got one returning,” said Willoughby, referring to junior fi eld com-petitor Micah Smith.

Smith is the team’s lone returning state qualifi er from 2011 where he competed in the high jump and pole vault . The team graduated fellow pole vaulter and state medal-ist, Jordan Ellison, but Wil-loughby said he has a few athletes to potentially join Smith in the vault this year.

The coach was not ready to commit any other athletes to fi eld events with the season still a couple of weeks out.

“We’ll probably be more fi eld dominated,”said Wil-loughby, when it came to the outlook of running events this spring. The team lost their only state qualifi er in a running event from last year, Joe Lee, to graduation.

Willoughby is looking to the distance side of the house for most of his strength early in the season.

“Blake Durham (who ran) cross country is just a fresh-man but he’s got a lot of ex-

perience. Wesley Howard has been with the program for six years and he’s a distance run-ner,” said Willoughby.

GIRLSThe girls’ track and fi eld

team returns in nearly full strength with seven of last year’s state qualifi ers return-ing.

“I feel pretty confi dent about our girls’ team. We’ve got a lot returning from last year with the exception of our throwers,” said Willoughby.

The team is looking to fi ll out the throwing events, an area where Casey has been strong under assistant coach Rex Rader. The team lost disc and shot put state quali-fi er B.J. Hogue to graduation while Shauna Wardrip, who qualifi ed in the disc, is not back this spring. Abby Meece returns to the shot put hoping to again qualify for the state meet in the event.

Pole vaulters Shelby Stringer and Nicole Nagy re-turn with hopes to better last year’s performances. The pair took fourth and ninth in state respectively, in 2011.

Willoughby is looking to newcomer freshman Kelsey Arthur to potentially excel in one or more fi eld events in addition to her distance run-ning. While the practice sea-son is still early, Willoughby has yet to decide whether she’ll be competing in the long jump, triple jump or even possibly throwing.

Casey’s relay teams look to be a force to be reckoned with as the state qualifying teams return and the potential to fi ll out the mile or two mile relays.

“All of my state qualify-ing teams are returning,” said Willoughby, referring to the 4x100 and 4x200 meter re-lays.

Jasmine Johnson, Laura Parris and Kaitlyn Carmicle run a leg of both relays while Tiara Cochran rounds out the 4x100 and Lakken Miller is the fourth leg of the 4x200.

Willoughby said new fresh-

man Tiara Sengkhamyong brings some middle distance talent to the track. He hopes to have her join sophomore Aubrey Buis and potentially Miller and Cochran to form a competitive 4x400 or 4x800 team.

Carmicle will also compete in the hurdles where she qual-ifi ed for state in the 100-me-ter hurdles last season.

In addition to Rader coach-ing the throwers, Willoughby is assisted by Amanda Hatter as the middle school coach and Chris Arthur as the dis-tance coach.

The Lady Rebel softball team will swing into action next week under the leadership of new coach Brook Shelton.

Despite losing three girls to graduation last season, Shelton

grew the roster from last year’s 13 to 18 and that growth did not come through incoming fresh-men only.

“I actually do not have a lot of young girls that came up,” said Shelton. “I worked to re-cruit girls and met with the ones interested on several oc-casions.”

The 18-girl roster is dominat-ed by upperclassmen, including seven seniors. Seniors Abby Buis, Shelby Henson, Leann King and Amber Vaughn return to the fi eld from last season and are joined by Kristin Ellis, Paige Herren and Ashley Mc-Queary. Four juniors add to the upperclassmen along with two sophomores and fi ve freshmen.

Buis returns with last year’s top infi eld fi elding percentage of 97 percent. Vaughn comes off last season with an outfi eld fi elding percentage of 95 per-cent as well as having the most stolen bases at 13.

Junior Raven Clements returns with last year’s best batting average. Sophomore

Amber Wesley brings experi-ence from the pitcher’s mound where she pitched 107 innings last season and gained 106 strikeouts.

Shelton said she is still mak-ing decisions on where her ath-letes are best suited to play on the fi eld and positions are still being decided.

The fi rst game is next Thurs-day at Campbellsville and Shelton is ready to get the sea-son underway as she has been working with the team since last fall.

“I think our schedule is going to be tough, especially for a new coach,” said Shelton. “I am ex-cited and looking forward to the season beginning next week. Since I am new to this district and region I am not sure what to think but, as always, I have very high expectations for my girls and expect them to play their hardest and do well.”

Shelton, a former softball athlete from Adair County, is joined by assistant coach Angie McQueary as she takes on her fi rst coaching position.

Tennis teams ready for 2012 with experienced players returningBy Rita “Peat” Harris

The Casey County tennis program, which is coming off a 31-2 combined season, kicks off their season this week. The teams will host a double-header match against Wayne County Friday at home.

GIRLSThe girls’ tennis team moves

into what could potentially be their best season yet. They are coming off a 14-2 season and lost only one senior to gradua-tion.

“We have our (tournament) team coming back and we have some players who didn’t come back,” said interim Coach Jim Coffey. Coffey will stand in for Head Coach Tommy Wood, who is currently recovering from surgery.

“We’re pretty solid from top to bottom,” said Coffey, com-menting that in addition to the experienced tournament players the team has several younger girls whom he expects to play throughout the season to further develop their skills.

“Our focus is the team,” said Coffey, explaining whether a girl plays as the teams number one or number six seed.

“No matter where you play (a win is) a point and it takes fi ve (points) to win (the match),” said Coffey.

The Lady Rebels are headed by two juniors, Allie Tinsley and Tylyn Leigh, both having tour-nament play experience from past years. Tinsley and return-ing sophomore Hayley Owens

advanced to the state tourna-ment as a doubles team last sea-son and look to repeat.

Also returning are Sarah Coffman, Chelsey Lynn, Tay-lor Monday, Madison Lee and Savannah Skipper. The team’s young newcomers are Amber Pierce and Laci Lee.

Casey’s two losses in 2011 came at the hands of Mercer County, which won the 12th Re-gion Tournament.

BOYSThe boys’ tennis program

heads into its 13th season under Head Coach Phil Williams. The team will look to continue the undefeated streak it began three seasons ago as well as contend for a fourth 12th Region title.

The 11-person team is led by upperclassmen, all of whom have tournament experience. Leading the team are seniors Ryan Martin and Clay Cannon, who went 15-1 and 12-1, respec-tively, in singles play last season. Four juniors join them, Taylor

Leigh, Hunter Pierce, Luke Sa-lyers and Skyler Wright.

“They were the members who made up our championship team last year,” said Williams, noting the team’s loss of state qualifi er, Brad Jeffries, who graduated.

“I don’t really want to sell one (player) short over the other. The thing about tennis is, you’re as strong as your weakest link, if you have a weak link and hope-fully you don’t. You have to be strong from the top to bottom,” said Williams.

Despite the experience of the upperclassmen, Williams is also focused on building future teams. Sophomores Trent Rogers and Justin Underwood round out the high school athletes. Luke Coff-man will join the team from the middle school while Luke John-son and Jackson Ponder come up from the elementary level.

A variance in the singles and doubles play, as well as the play-ers seeding throughout the sea-son, is expected.

“We play to our strengths

and we have some players that are not only good singles play-ers but good doubles players as well,” said Williams.

The team kicked off their sea-son yesterday against PulaskiCounty.
