7th International Ground Water Conference on Ground Water Vision 2030 | December 11 - 13, 2017, New Delhi, India 3
WELCOME TO THE 7th INTERNATIONAL GROUND WATER CONFERENCE
on Ground Water Vision 2030: Water Security, Challenges and Climate Change Adaptation
We warmly welcome all the distinguished dignitaries, foreign and Indian keynote speakers, delegates, young researchers, and, sponsors and
exhibitors to the “International Ground Water Conference-2017 (IGWC-2017)” focusing on “Groundwater Vision 2030: Water Security,
Challenges and Climate Change Adaptation”, scheduled from 11-13 December, 2017 at ICAR-NASC Complex, Pusa, New Delhi. The
conference is organized by the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, and Central Ground Water Board, Faridabad, jointly with
Association of Global Groundwater Scientists (AGGS) and Texas A & M University, USA, under the aegis of ‘National Hydrology Project’,
Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India.
Groundwater, one of the world’s most important natural resources, is under constant threat of over-exploitation with increasing population,
rising standard of living, and economic development. All around the world, groundwater is a resource in transition. India, at present, is the
largest and fastest growing user of groundwater in the world. On a global level, depleting groundwater storage and increasing pollution are
the key issues threatening the sustainability of groundwater resources. Impact of climate change on both surface and ground water
resources is another important issue. However, because of its characteristic buffer capacity, groundwater is more resilient to the effects
of climate change than is surface water.
Groundwater regulation and governance are quite complex and need to be tailored to suit local conditions. In the case of transboundary
aquifer systems, the international dimension adds additional complexity. International cooperation and a wide range of international
initiatives can produce significant added value. Ensuring that groundwater is adequately incorporated into actions at global level is a
challenge for all groundwater professionals. The issues of groundwater including governance, sustainable development and management
need an International debate to reach a consensus amongst stakeholders, policy planners, water managers, researchers, professionals and
environmentalists.
The aim of IGWC-2017 is to provide a common platform for policy planners, researchers, academicians, water managers, professionals,
industrialists, technocrats, and young researchers and aspirants to discuss and present their views and vision on emerging issues related to
groundwater management in the face of growing challenges of the needs of the rising earth population and anticipated impacts of climate
change.
7th International Ground Water Conference on Ground Water Vision 2030 | December 11 - 13, 2017, New Delhi, India 4
Besides keynote and technical sessions on all the three days of the conference, three important add-on activities shall be held in the
evening on Day 2 after the technical sessions, viz., IAH Session on Managed Aquifer Recharge, INC-IHP Brainstorming Session on
‘Groundwater in a Changing Environment’, and Annual General Body Meeting of AGGS.
The conference has another attractive activity “Business to Business Exhibition” to showcase hardware and software solutions, technology
solutions & demonstration, instruments & products exhibit etc. A number of exhibitors will take part in the exhibition for showcasing their
products. The exhibition will continue on all the three days.
On 14th December, 2017, a post-conference workshop on “Groundwater Modelling using iMOD for the Ganga basin” shall be jointly organized
by Deltares, The Netherlands, and the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee.
For organizing a Conference at this mega scale, a good amount of financial resources are required, which we could achieve by sponsorships
from different ministries, organizations, PSUs and also from exhibitors. We thankfully acknowledge the cooperation and financial support
provided by our sponsors and exhibitors. The generous support provided by the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga
Rejuvenation in organizing this Conference is gratefully acknowledged.
We have made our best possible efforts to facilitate the platform for dialogue initiation, exchange of views, share your experiences, and
promote innovative technologies, with an objective to take a step forward towards resolving future emerging challenges related to
groundwater. The success of the Conference depends on how we take and deliberate on the scientific issues in the three days program.
We wish you all a very pleasant stay in New Delhi. Enjoy the social activities and the post-conference field trips!!
