WARRANTY POLICYMaruti Suzuki India Limited (hereinafter called “Maruti Suzuki ”),warrants that each new Maruti Suzuki vehicle distributed in India byMaruti Suzuki and sold by an authorised Maruti Suzuki dealer willbe free, under normal use and service, from any defects in materialand workmanship at the time of manufacture SUBJECT TO THEFOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

(1) Qualification:To qualify for this warranty:

(a) The Maruti Suzuki vehicle must be delivered by MarutiSuzuki authorised dealer and set-up, serviced by MarutiSuzuki authorised dealer/service station.

(b) The warranty registration card in respect of each vehiclemust be completed by the dealer at the time of deliveryof the vehicle and dealer should retain the same.

(2) Term:The term of the warranty shall be twenty four (24) monthsor 40,000 kilometers (whichever occurs first) from the dateof delivery to the first owner.

(3) Maruti Suzuki ’s Warranty Obligation:If any defect(s) should be found in a Maruti Suzuki vehicle withinthe term stipulated above, Maruti Suzuki ’s only obligation is torepair or replace at its sole discretion any part shown to bedefective, with a new part or the equivalent at no cost to theowner for parts or labour, when Maruti Suzuki acknowledgesthat such a defect is attributable to faulty material or workmanshipat the time of manufacture. The owner is responsible for anyrepair or replacements which are not covered by this warranty.

(4) Limitation:This warranty shall not apply to:(a) normal maintenance service required other than the three free

services, including without limitation, oil and fluid changes,headlight aiming, fastener retightening, wheel balancing, wheelalignment and tyre rotation, cleaning of injectors, adjustmentsof carburettor, ignition timing, clutch and valve clearance.

(b) the replacement of normal wear parts including withoutlimitation, bulbs, tyres and tubes, spark plugs, belts, hoses,filters, wiper blades, brushes, contact points, fuses, clutchdisc, brake shoes, brake pads, cable and all rubber parts(except oil seal and glass run).

(c) any vehicle which has been uses for competition or racing.(d) any repairs or replacement required as a result of accidents

or collision.(e) any defects caused by misuse, negligence, abnormal use or

insufficient care.(f) any vehicle which has been midified or altered, including

without limitation, the installation of performance accessories.(g) any vehicle on which parts or accessories not approved by

Maruti Suzuki have been used.(h) any vehicle which has not been operated in accordance with

the operating instructions in the Maruti Suzuki Owner’sManual.

(i) any vehicle which has not received, during the warranty term,the service inspections prescribed in the Maruti SuzukiOwner’s Manual.

(j) any vehicle which has been assembled, disassembled,adjusted or repaired by other than an Maruti Suzukiauthorised dealer/service station.

(k) any vehicle which has been used for purposes other thanwhat it was designed for.

(l) any damage or deterioration caused by industrial pollution andbird droppings.

(m) insignificant defects which do not affect the function of thevehicle including without limitation sound, vibration and fluidseep.

(n) any natural wear and tear including without limitation, agingetc.

(o) Installation and usage of Domestic LPG Gas/LPG cylinder.

(p) V-belts, hoses and gas leaks. (For Maruti Suzuki AC Vehicle.)

(q) Any vehicle retrofitted with LPG/CNG kits.

(5) Extent of Warranty:This warranty is the entire written warranty given by Maruti Suzukifor Maruti Suzuki vehicles and no dealer or its or his agentor employee is authorised to extend or enlarge this warranty andno dealer or its or his agent or employee is authorised to makeany oral warranty on Maruti Suzuki ’s behalf.

Maruti Suzuki reserves the right to add any improvements orchange the design of any model at any time with no obligationto make the same changes on units previously sold.

(6) Warranty Service:To obtain warranty service, the complete vehicle must bepresented at the owner’s expenses to any authorised MarutiSuzuki dealer.

(7) Owner’s Warranty Responsibilities:It is responsibility of each owner to:

(a) make certain that the warranty registration/PDI card wascompleted at the time of delivery of the vehicle;

(b) have performed, at his own expenses, by an Maruti Suzukiauthorised dealer/service station all the service inspectionsspecified in the Maruti Suzuki “Owner’s Manual and ServiceBooklet” and maintain adequate proof that such serviceinspections have been performed.

(c) make certain that the Maruti Suzuki authorised dealer/servicestation performing the service inspection has certified the workon the “Maintenance Service Record” page in the “Owner’sManual and Service Booklet” and

(d) present the Maruti Suzuki “Owner’s Manual and ServiceBooklet” to the authorised Maruti Suzuki dealer wheneverrequesting service inspections or warranty service.

If the “Owner’s Manual and Service Booklet” should be lost ordestroyed the owner should consult the authorised Maruti Suzukidealer from whom the vehicle was purchased for instructionsconcerning replacement of the “Owner’s Manual and Service Booklet”.

(8) Disclaimer of Consequential Damage:Maruti Suzuki assumes no responsibility for loss of vehicle, lossof time, inconvenience or any other indirect incidental orconsequential damage resulting from the vehicle not beingavailable to the owner because of any defect covered by thiswarranty.

(9) Change of OwnerEven if ownership of the vehicle changes, the remaining warrantyperiod is effective for the new owner.

Maruti Suzuki offers the Emission Warranty on all Maruti Suzuki vehicles (aparts from the Regular Warranty and will run parallel to theregular product warranty) only in four metropolitan cities (New Delhi, Kolkatta, Mumbai and Chennai) with effect from July 1st, 2001.

Terms:The Emission Warranty will be applicable for 80,000 kms or 3 years (Whichever comes earlier) from the date of delivery to the firstowner. The remaining warranty terms will be valid in case of any change in ownership provided the production of all valid documents.

Conditions :

1. Under Emission Warranty, Warranty claims will be admitted for a prima facie examination, in case vehicle fails to meet to theEmission Standard as specified in sub rule (2) of rule no. 115 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.

2. The warranty claims will only be accepted after examination carried out by Maruti Suzuki or it’s dealer which leads to firm conclusionsthat the

a) Original settings have not been tempered in any case.

b) Part (as given in Annexure-A) has a manufacturing defect.

c) Vehicle is unable to meet the Emission Standards (as given in 1.), inspite of the vehicle having been maintained and usedin accordance with the instructions as specified in Owner’s Manual and Service Booklet and the used fuel and different oils(Engine oil, Transmission oil, Brake oil etc.) are also as per specification.

3. The method of examination for deciding the warranty of the parts will be at the sole discretion of Maruti Suzuki and it’s dealer andresults of the examination will be final and binding. If after examination, the warrantable condition is not established, Maruti Suzukiand it’s dealer has the right to charge all, or part of the cost of such examination.

4. Under Emission Warranty, the parts (as given in Annexure-A) will be changed free of cost, but the consumables will be chargedas per actual.

5. If the part covered under Emission Warranty or the associated parts, are not independently replaceable, on account of thesebeing integral parts of a complete assembly, Maruti Suzuki and it’s dealer will have the sole discretion to replace either the entireassembly or by using some of the parts of the system through suitable repairs or modifications.

6. Any consequential repairs or replacement of parts which may be found necessary to establish compliance of Emission Warranty,will not be considered under warranty, unless the same is under product warranty. The consumable will be charged as peractual under such repair or replacement.

7. Maruti Suzuki will not be responsible for the cost of transportation of the vehicle to the nearest Maruti Suzuki dealer workshopor any loss due to non-availability of the vehicle during the period of lodging of a warranty claim and examination and/or repair byMaruti Suzuki dealer.

8. Maruti Suzuki will not responsible for any penalty that may be charged by statutory authorities on account of failure to comply withthe EMISSION STANDARDS.

9. Emission Warranty will not be affected on the change of owner, provided all the documents are available.

10. All maintenance actions (as specified in the Owner’s Manual and Service Booklet) need to be followed and recorded in the manualfor emission warranty.

11. The customer needs to produce the PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate valid for the period preceding the test during whichthe failure is discovered. The receipts (for the maintenance of the vehicle as per specification in Owner’s Manual and ServiceBooklet from the date of original purchase of the vehicle) will also be required.

Conditions under which the Emission Warranty is not APPLICABLE1. In the absence of valid PUC certificate.

2. Vehicle not serviced from Maruti Suzuki authorised workshop as per the schedule specified in the Owner’s Manual .

3. Vehicle subjected to abnormal use (accident, motor race, rallies or for the purpose of establishing the records etc.)

4. Use the non MGP (Maruti Genuine Part).

5. Vehicle tempered in an unauthorised manner.

6. Tampering with odometer so that the actual kilometer reading can not be read.

7. Use of adulterated fuel and/or unspecified oils (Engine oil, Transmission oil and Brake oil etc.)

CAUTION

FUEL RECOMMENDATION

Petrol/Ethanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and ethanol(grain alcohol), also known as gasohol, arecommercially available in some areas.Blends of this type may be used in yourvehicle if they are no more than 5% ethanol.Make sure this petrol-ethanol blend hasoctane ratings no lower than thoserecommended for petrol.

Use of leaded fuel in vehicle equippedwith catalytic converter is prohibited,because lead deactivates the pollutant-reducing components of catalyticconverter and may result in permanentdamage to catalytic converter.

You must use unleaded petrol with anoctane number (RON) of 91 or higher. Yourvehicle is fitted with a restrictor in the fuelfilter pipe which will not allow the use oflarge nozzle used for dispensing leadedfuel at filling station.

Omni MPFI

Petrol/Methanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and methanol (woodalcohol) are also commercially available insome areas. DO NOT USE fuels containingmore than 5% methanol under anycircumstances. Fuel system damage orvehicle performance problems resulting fromthe use of such fuels are not theresponsibility of MARUTI SUZUKI and maynot be covered under Warranty.

Fuels containing 5% or less methanol maybe suitable for use in your vehicle if theycontain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.

NOTE:If you are not satisfied with the driveabilityor fuel economy of your vehicle when youare using a petrol/alcohol blend, you shouldswitch back to unleaded petrol containing noalcohol.

CAUTIONBe careful not to spill fuel containing al-cohol while refuelling. Fuels containingalcohol can cause paint damage, whichis not covered under Warranty.

The fuel tank has an air space to allowfor fuel expansion in hot weather. ifyou continue to add fuel after the fillernozzle has automatically shut off or aninitial blowback full. Exposure to heatwhen fully fuelled in this manner willresult in leakage due to fuel expansion.to prevent such fuel leakage, stopfilling after the filler nozzle hasautomatically shut off, or when usingan alternative non automatic system,Initial vent blowback occurs.

Immobilizer System (if equipped)This system is designed to help prevent ve-hicle theft by electronically disabling the en-gine starting system.The engine can be started only with yourvehicle’s original immobilizer ignition key whichhas an electronic identification code pro-grammed into it. The key communicates theidentification code to the vehicle when the keyis turned to the “ON” position. If you need tomake spare keys, contact your MARUTISUZUKI dealer. The vehicle must be pro-grammed with the correct identification codefor the spare keys. A key made by an ordi-nary locksmith will not work.

Your vehicle comes with a pair of indenticalkeys, keep the spare key in a safe palce. Onekey can open all of the locks on the vehicle.

The key Indentification number is stamped onthe keys. if you lose your keys, you will needthis number to have new keys made. Writethe number down and keep it in a safeaccessible place away from the vehicle.

• Do not use locally made key.• Should you require a duplicate key.

NOTE:Keep the spane key very carefully. When itis lost, consult your dealer by quoting keynumber.

NOTE:• If you lose your immobilizer ignition key,

contact your MARUTI SUZUKI dealer assoon as possible to have the lost one de-activated, then have the new key made bythem.

• If you own other vehicles with immobilizerkeys, keep those key away from the igni-tion switch when using your vehicle, or theengine may not be started because theymay interfere with your vehicle’s immobi-lizer system.

If the immobilizer system light (1) blinks whenthe ignition switch is in the “ON” position,there my be something wrong with your keyor with the immobilizer system. Contact yourMARUTI SUZUKI dealer to inspect the sys-tem.

• Keep the immobilizer key away frommagnetic objects.

Front Right DoorTo lock the door from outside the vehicle:a) Insert the key fully and turn the top of

the key toward the front of the vehicle,or

b) Push in the lock lever and hold the doorhandle up as you close the door.

To unlock a front door from outside thevehicle, insert the key fully and turn the topof the key toward the rear of the vehicle.

Front Door WindowRaise or lower the door windows by turningthe handle located on the door panel.

CAUTION

Always make sure that the backc door isclosed and latched securely. Closing theback door completely helps keep ex-haust gases from entering the vuhicle.Completely closing the back door alsohelps prevent occupants from beingthrown from the vehcile in the event ofan accident.

Back doorTo unlock, Insert the key into the lock Knoband turn it clockwise, and to lock, turfn itanticlockwise. Backdoor can be opened bypushing in the lock Knob and lifting the grip.

Sliding Door Window (If Equipped)Release the lock and simultaneously pushthe glass backwards to any desired openposition. To lock the window, close the glasscompletely by pushing it forward.

Outside Rearview MirrorAdjust the outside rearview mirror so you canjust see the side of your vehicle in the mirror.

DRIVER'S SEAT ADJUSTMENT

Never attempt to adjust the driver’sseat or seatback while driving. Theseat or seatback could moveunexpectedly, causing loss of control.Make sure that the driver’s seat andseatback are properly adjusted beforeyou start driving.

Adjusting Driver's Seat PositionThe adjustment lever is located under thefront of the seat, on the inboard side. Toadjust the seat position, pull up on theadjustment lever and slide the seat forwardor rearward. After adjustment, try to movethe seat forward and rearward to ensure thatit is securely latched.

To avoid excessive seat belt slack,which reduces the effectiveness of theseat belt as a safety device, make surethat the seat is adjusted before theseat belt is fastened.

Adjusting SeatbacksThe seatbacks can be adjusted to differentangles (5 Seater Models only). To adjustthe seatback angle, push the lever on theoutboard side of the seat, move theseatback to the desired position, and releasethe lever to lock the seatback in place.The seatbacks can also be folded forward.

Seatbacks should always be in anupright position when driving, or seatbelt effectiveness may be reduced.Seat belts are designed to offermaximum protection when seatbacksare in the fully upright position.

ADJUSTABLE HEAD RESTRAINTS(if equipped)

WARNING• Never drive the vehicle with the

head restraints removed.• Do not attempt to adjust the head

restraint while driving.

Head restraints are designed to help reducethe risk of neck injuries in the case of anaccident. Adjust the head restraint to theposition which places the middle of the headrestraint closest to the top of your ears.

There are two height positions for the headrestraints. To raise the head restraint, pullupward on the restraint until it clicks. Tolower the restraint, push down on therestraint. If a head restraint must be removed(for cleaning, replacement, etc.), turn theportion as indicated with the arrow inillustration and pull the head restraint all theway out.

Wear Your Seat Belts at All Times.

To fasten the seat belt, pull the buckletongue attached to the seat belt across yourbody and slide it into the buckle catch sloton the opposite side until you hear a “click”.

To reduce the risk of sliding under the beltduring a collision, position the lap portion ofthe belt across your lap as low on your hipsas possible and adjust the belt to a snug fitusing the proper method described below.Make sure that the belt is not twisted.

Anyseat belt assembly which was in useduring a collision (other than a veryminor one) should be replaced, evenif damage to the assembly is notobvious. Any seat belt assemblywhich was not in use during acollision should be replaced if it doesnot function properly or is damagedin any way.

• Never allow persons to ride in thecargo area of a vehicle. In the eventof an accident, there is a muchgreater risk of injury for persons whoare not riding in a seat with theirseat belt securely fastened.

• Seat belts should always be adjustedso the lap portion of the belt isworn low across the pelvis, notacross the waist. Shoulder strapsshould be worn on the outsideshoulder only, and never under thearm. Seat belts should never be wornwith the straps twisted and shouldbe adjusted as tightly as iscomfortable to provide theprotection for which they have beendesigned. A slack belt will provideless protection than one which issnug.

• Make sure that each seat belt buckleis inserted into the proper bucklecatch.

• Do not wear your seat belt overhard or breakable objects in your

pockets or on your clothing. If anaccident occurs, objects such asglasses, pens, etc. under the seat beltcan cause injury.

• Never use the same seat belt on morethan one occupant and never attacha seat belt over an infant or childbeing held on an occupant’s lap.Such seat belt use could causeserious injury in the event of anaccident.

• Pregnant women should use seatbelts, although specificrecommendations about restraint useshould be made by the woman’smedical advisor.

• Periodically inspect seat beltassemblies for excessive wear anddamage. Seat belts should bereplaced if webbing becomes frayed,contaminated, or damaged in anyway. It is essential to replace theentire seat belt assembly after it hasbeen stressed in an impact, even ifdamage to the assembly is notobvious.

• Infants and small children shouldnever be transported unless they areproperly restrained. Restraint systemsfor infants and small children can bepurchased locally and should beused. Make sure that the system youpurchase meets applicable safetystandards. Read and follow all thedirections provided by themanufacturer.

• Avoid contamination of seat beltwebbing by polishes, oils, chemicals,and particularly battery acid.Cleaning may safely be carried outusing mild soap and water.

• For children, if the shoulder beltirritates the neck or face, move thechild closer to the center of thevehicle.

To Adjust the Belt

• Automatic retracting type (ifequipped)Pull the shoulder portion of the beltupwards through the tongue plate.

The length of the diagonal shoulder strapadjusts itself to allow freedom of movement.The seat belt has an emergency lockingretractor (ELR), which is designed to lockthe seat belt only during a sudden stop orimpact.

No modifications or additions of anysort should be made to the seat beltor its operating mechanism.

IGNITION SWITCH

The ignition switch has the following fourpositions:

w WARNING• Do not use any locally made key.• Should you require duplicate key,

LOCKThis is the normal parking position. It is theonly position in which the key can beremoved.

The “LOCK” position locks the ignition, andprevents normal use of the steering wheelafter the key is removed.

To release the steering lock, fully insert thekey and turn it clockwise to one of theother positions. If you have trouble turningthe key to unlock the steering, try turningthe steering wheel slightly to the right orleft while turning the key.

LIGHTING/TURN SIGNALCONTROL LEVER

This control lever is located on theoutboard side of the steering column.Operate the lever as described below.

Lighting OperationTo turn the lights on or off, twist the knobon the end of the lever. There are threepositions: in the “OFF” position all lights areoff; in the middle position the front parkinglights, tail-lights, registration plate light, andinstrument lights are on, but the headlightsare off; in the third position the headlightscome on in addition to the other lights.

WARNING AND INDICATOR LIGHTS

Brake fluid level warning lightThis light operates under two conditions: 1)when the ignition switch is turned to the“ON” position, or 2) when the fluid in thebrake fluid reservoir falls below thespecified level. The light should go out afterstarting the engine. If the light does not gooff or comes on whilst you are driving, itmay mean that there is something wrongwith the vehicle’s braking system. If thishappens, you should:

1) Pull off the road and stop carefully.

Remember that stopping distance maybe longer, you may have to pushharder on the pedal, and the pedal maygo down farther than normal.

2) Test the brakes by carefully starting andstopping at the side of the road.

3) If you determine that it is safe, drive care-fully at low speed to the nearest dealer forrepairs.

or4) Have the vehicle towed to the nearest

dealer for repairs.

If any of the following conditionsoccur, you should immediately askyour MARUTI SUZUKI dealer to inspectthe brake system.• If the brake fluid level warning light

does not go out after the engine hasbeen started.

• If the brake fluid level warning lightdoes not come on when the ignitionswitch is turned to the “ON”position.

• If the brake fluid level warning lightcomes on at any time during vehicleoperation.

Oil Pressure LightThis light comes on when the ignition switchis turned on, and goes out when the engineis started. The light will come on and remainon if there is insufficient oil pressure. If thelight comes on when driving, pull off the roadas soon as you can and stop the engine.Check the oil level and add oil if necessary(see pages 9-7 and 9-8). If there is enoughoil, the lubrication system should be inspectedby your MARUTI SUZUKI dealer before youdrive the vehicle again.

Charging LightThis light comes on when the ignitionswitch is turned on, and goes out when theengine is started. “Malfunction Indicator” LightYour vehicle has a computer-controlledemission control system. A “MalfunctionIndicator” light is provided on the instrumentpanel to indicate when it is necessary tohave the emission control system serviced.The “Malfunction Indicator” light comes onwhen the ignition switch is turned to “ON”and goes out when the engine is started.If the “Malfunction Indicator” light comes onwhen the engine is running, there is aproblem with the emission control system.Take the vehicle to your MARUTI SUZUKIdealer to have the problem corrected.

CAUTIONContinuing to drive the vehicle whenthe “Malfunction Indicator” light ison can cause permanent damage tothe vehicle’s emission controlsystem, and can affect fuel economyand driveability.

PARKING BRAKE LEVER

The parking brake lever is located betweenthe seats. To apply the parking brake, holdthe brake pedal down and pull the parkingbrake lever all the way up. To release theparking brake, hold the brake pedal down,pull up slightly on the parking brake lever,push the button on the end of the leverwith your thumb, and lower the lever to itsoriginal position.

parking brake on: rear brakeeffectiveness can be reduced fromover heating, brake life may beshortened, or permanent brakedamage may result.

Do not “ride” the brakes by applyingthem continuously or resting yourfoot on the pedal. This will result inoverheating of the brakes whichcould cause unpredictable brakingaction, longer stopping distances, orpermanent brake damage.

Accelerator Pedal 3This pedal controls the speed of the engine.Depressing the accelerator pedal increasespower output and speed.

1. Fold the seat forward by pushing the leveron the outboard side of the seat.

• If the engine does not start after 15seconds of cranking, wait about 15seconds, then press down theaccelerator pedal to 1/3 of its traveland try cranking the engine again.Release the key and accelerator pedalwhen the engine starts.

• If the engine still does not start, tryholding the accelerator pedal all theway to the floor while cranking. Thisshould clear the engine if it is flooded.

Starting offTo start off, depress and maintain pressureupon the clutch pedal and change into 1stgear. After releasing the parking brake,gradually release the clutch. down to a lower gear before goingdown a long or steep hill. A lowergear will allow the engine toprovide braking. Avoid riding thebrakes or they may overheat,resulting in brake failure.

• When driving on slippery roads, besure to slow down beforechanging down. Excessive and orsudden changes in engine speedmay cause loss of traction, whichcould cause you to lose control.

• Make sure that the vehicle iscompletely stationary before youchange into reverse.

CAUTION• To help avoid clutch damage, do

not use the clutch pedal as afootrest while driving or use theclutch to keep the vehiclestationary on a hill. Depress theclutch fully when changing gear.

• When changing gears or startingoff, do not race the engine. Racingthe engine can shorten engine lifeand prevent smooth operation.

The distance needed to bring any vehicle toa halt increases with the speed of the ve-hicle. The braking distance needed, for ex-ample, at 60 km/h will be approximately 4times greater than the braking distanceneeded at 20 km/h. Start to brake thevehicle when there is plenty of distancebetween your vehicle and the stoppingpoint, and slow down gradually.

BRAKING

w WARNINGIf water gets into the brake drums, brakeperformance may become poor andunpredictable. After driving throughwater or washing the underside of thevehicle, test the brakes while driving ata slow speed to see if they havemaintained their normal effectiveness.If the brakes are less effective thannormal, dry them by repeatedlyapplying the brakes while driving slowlyuntil the brakes have regained theirnormal effectiveness.

The purpose of the catalytic converterinstalled on your vehicle is to convertexhaust pollutants to harmless water vapour,carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Use of leadedfuel in vehicles equipped with catalyticconverters is prohibited, because leaddeactivates the pollutant-reducingcomponents of the catalyst system.

It is very important to keep the engineproperly tuned. Engine misfiring, which canresult from an improperly tuned engine,may cause overheating of the catalyst. Thismay result in permanent heat damage tothe catalyst and other vehicle components.

Avoid excessive idling:If you are to wait for more than a minutewhile you are parked, stop the engine andstart it again later. When warming up acold engine, allow the engine to idle untilthe temperature gauge pointer comes up tothe “C” position. In this position, the engineis sufficiently warm for starting off.

Avoid “fast” starts:Fast starts away from lights or stop signswill consume fuel unnecessarily and shortenengine life. Start off slowly.

Avoid unnecessary stops:Avoid unnecessary deceleration andstopping. Try to maintain a slow, steadyspeed whenever possible. Slowing downand then accelerating again uses more fuel.

Keep a steady cruising speed:Keep as constant a speed as road andtraffic conditions will permit.

IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

Keep the air cleaner clean:A dirty air cleaner will cause the carburationsystem to supply too much fuel to theengine for the amount of air being supplied.The result is waste of fuel due toincomplete combustion.

Keep weight to a minimum:The heavier the load, the more fuel thevehicle consumes. Take out any luggageor cargo when it is not necessary.

Keep tyre pressures correct:Under-inflation of the tyres can waste fueldue to increased running resistance of thetyres. Keep your tyres inflated to thecorrect pressure shown on the label on thedriver’s side door or door lock pillar.

TRAILER TOWING

Your MARUTI was originally designed to carrypeople and a normal amount of cargo, notto tow a trailer. Maruti Suzuki does notrecommend you use your vehicle to tow atrailer. Towing a trailer can adversely affecthandling, durability, and fuel economy.

HIGH-SPEED DRIVING

When driving at a high-speed, pay attentionto the following:• Stopping distance progressively increases

with vehicle speed. Apply the brakes farenough ahead of the stopping point toallow for the extra stopping distance.

• On rainy days, “Aquaplaning” can occur.“Aquaplaning” is the loss of direct contactbetween the road surface and thevehicle’s tyres due to a water filmforming between them. Steering orbraking the vehicle while “Aquaplaning”can be very difficult, and loss of controlcan occur. Keep speed down when theroad surface is wet.

• At high speeds, the vehicle may beaffected by side winds. Therefore, reducespeed and be prepared for unexpectedbuffeting, which can occur at the exits oftunnels, when passing by a cut of a hill,or when being overtaken by largevehicles, etc.

DRIVING ON HILLS• When climbing steep hills, the vehicle may

begin to slow down and show a lack ofpower. If this happens, you should changeto a lower gear so that the engine will againbe operating in its normal power range.

Change rapidly to prevent the car fromlosing momentum.

• When driving down a hill, the engine shouldbe used for braking by shifting to nextlower gear.

Try not to hold the brake pedal downtoo long or too often while going downa steep or long hill. This could causethe brakes to overheat, resulting inreduced braking efficiency. Failure totake this precaution could result in lossof vehicle control.

When descending a down hill, NEVERturn the ignition key to the “OFF”position. Emission control systemdamage may result.

DRIVING ON SLIPPERY ROADSUnder wet road conditions you should driveat a lower speed than on dry roads dueto possible slippage of tyres during braking.When driving on icy, snowcovered, ormuddy roads, reduce your speed and avoidsudden acceleration, abrupt braking, orsharp steering movements.

Snow ChainsIf you must use snow chains to increase tyretraction, observe the following precautions:

• Choose a safe place away from trafficto install the chains.

• When installing the chains carefully followthe manufacturer’s instructions.

• Install the chains on the rear tyres.• With the chains on, drive only at slow

and moderate speeds.• If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck

If your vehicle gets stuck in snow, mud,or sand, follow the directions below:

1) Change back and forth between firstgear and reverse. This will create arocking motion which may give youenough momentum to free the vehicle.Press gently on the accelerator to keepwheel spin to a minimum. Remove yourfoot from the accelerator while changinggear.Do not race the engine. Excessivewheel spin will cause the tyres to digdeeper, making it more difficult to freethe vehicle.

2) If your vehicle remains stuck after a fewminutes of rocking, get another vehicleto pull you out.

Do not allow anyone to stand near thevehicle when you are rocking it, anddo not spin the wheels faster than anindicated 40 km/h on the speedometer.Personal injury and/or vehicle damagemay result from spinning the wheelstoo fast.

DRIVING ON WET ROADSCAUTION

• When driving on wet roads, avoid driv-ing through large amount of standingwater on the road. Large amount ofwater entering the engine compartmentmay cause damage to the engine andor electrical components.

• If stuck in deep water, do not start tillwater level drops.

• Water is incompressible substance,water inside engine is harmful tothe engine.”

• Make sure your tyres are in goodcondition and always maintain thespecified tyre pressure. Refer to“TYRES” in the “INSPECTION ANDMAINTENANCE” section for details.

• Do not use tyres other than thosespecified by MARUTI SUZUKI. Neveruse different sizes or types of tyreson the front and rear wheels. Forinformation regarding the specifiedtyres, refer to the “SPECI-FICATIONS” section.

• Never use oversized tyres or specialshock absorbers and springs toraise (jack up) your vehicle. Thiswill change the handlingcharacteristics.

• After driving through water, test thebrakes while driving at a slowspeed to see if they have maintainedtheir normal effectiveness. If thebrakes are less effective thannormal, dry them by repeatedlyapplying the brakes while drivingslowly until the brakes have regainedtheir normal effectiveness.

Oil Level CheckIt is important to keep the engine oil at thecorrect level for proper lubrication of yourvehicle’s engine. Check the oil level with thevehicle on a level surface. The oil levelindication may be inaccurate if the vehicle ison a slope. The oil level should be checkedeither before starting the engine or at leastfive minutes after stopping the engine.

Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe oil off with a cleancloth, insert the dipstick all the way into theengine, then remove it again. The oil on thestick should be between the upper and lowerlimits shown on the stick. If the oil levelindication is near the lower limit, add enoughoil to raise the level to the upper limit.

RefillingRemove the oil filler cap and pour oil slowlythrough the filler hole to bring the oil levelto the upper limit on the dipstick. Be carefulnot to overfill. Too much oil is almost asbad as too little oil. After refilling, start theengine and allow it to idle for about aminute. Stop the engine, wait for two orthree minutes and check the oil level again.

w WARNINGThe engine oil temperature may behigh enough to burn your fingerswhen the drain plug is loosened. Waituntil the drain plug is cool enough totouch with your bare hands.

Changing Engine Oil and FilterDrain the engine oil while the engine is stillwarm.1) Remove the oil filler cap.2) Place a drain pan under the drain plug.3) Using the correct spanner remove the

drain plug and drain out the engine oil.

New and used oil can be hazardous.Children and pets may be harmed byswallowing new or used oil. Keepnew and used oil and used oil filtersaway from children and pets.Continuous contact with used engineoil has been found to cause (skin)cancer in laboratory animals.Brief contact with used oil may irritateskin.To minimize your exposure to usedoil, wear a long-sleeve shirt andmoistureproof gloves (such asdishwashing gloves) when changingoil. If oil contacts your skin, washthoroughly with soap and water.Launder any clothing or rags if wetwith oil.Recycle or properly dispose of usedoil and filters.

• When adding or replacing coolant,use a high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze and anticorrosion (Non-Amine type) diluted with distilledwater. If the lowest ambienttemperature in your area isexpected to be -150C (50F) orabove, make the antifreezeconcentration of the mixture youuse at least 30% but no more than50%. If -160C (30F) or below, makethe concentration at least 50%. Ifthe 50% concentration does notprovide adequate protectionagainst freezing, follow theinstructions on the antifreezecontainer to obtain the desiredfreezing point.

Parking brakeCheck the parking brake for properadjustment by counting the number ofclicks made by the ratchet teeth as youslowly pull up on the parking brake leverto the point of full engagement. STEERING

Check the play of the steering wheel bygently turning it from left to right andmeasuring the distance that it moves beforeyou feel slight resistance. The play shouldbe between 10—30 mm(0.4—1.2 in).Check that the steering wheel turns easilyand smoothly without rattling by turning itall the way to the right and to the left whiledriving very slowly in an open area. If theamount of free play is outside thespecification or you find anything else to bewrong, an inspection must be performed byyour MARUTI SUZUKI dealer.

CLUTCH PEDAL

Measure the clutch pedal play by moving theclutch pedal with your hand and measuringthe distance it moves until you feel slightresistance. The play in the clutch pedalshould be between 30—35 mm (1.2—1.4 in).If the play is more or less than the above,or clutch dragging is felt with the pedal fullydepressed, have the clutch inspected by yourMARUTI SUZUKI dealer.

TYRES

The front and rear tyre pressurespecifications for your vehicle are listed onthe Tyre Inflation Pressure Label and in the“SPECIFICATIONS” section at the end ofthis book. Both the front and rear tyresshould have the specified tyre pressure.

Tyre InspectionInspect your vehicle’s tyres periodically byperforming the following checks:

1) Measure the air pressure with a tyregauge. Adjust the pressure if necessary.

2) Check that the depth of the tread grooveis more than 1.6 mm (0.06 in). To helpyou check this, the tyres have molded-in tread wear indicators in the grooves.When the indicators appear on the treadsurface, the remaining depth of the treadis 1.6 mm (0.06 in) or less and the tyreshould be replaced.

3) Check for abnormal wear, cracks anddamage. Any tyres with cracks orother damage should be replaced. Ifany tyres show abnormal wear, havethem inspected by your MARUTI SUZUKIdealer.

4) Check for loose wheel nuts.5) Check that there are no nails, stones,

or other objects sticking into the tyres.

Your MARUTI SUZUKI is equippedwith tyres which are all the same typeand size. This is important to ensureproper steering and handling of thevehicle. Never mix tyres of different sizeor type on the four wheels of yourvehicle. The size and type of tyresused should be only those approvedby MARUTI SUZUKI as standard oroptional equipment for your vehicle.

The level of the battery solution must be keptbetween the “MAX” and the “MIN” level linesat all times. If the level is found to be belowthe “MIN” level line, add distilled water to the“MAX” level line. You should periodicallycheck the battery, battery terminals, andbattery hold-down bracket for corrosion.Remove corrosion using a stiff brush andammonia mixed with water, or baking sodamixed with water. After removing corrosion,rinse with clean water.

If your vehicle is not going to be driven fora month or longer, disconnect the cablefrom the negative terminal of the battery tohelp prevent discharge.

This vehicle has two types of fuses, asdescribed below :

Main Fuse (fusible link)-The main fuse takescurrent directly from the battery.

Individual Fuses-These fuses are in the fusebox and for individual electrical circuits.

• Use the jack only to changewheels.

• Never jack up the vehicle on aninclined surface.

• Never raise the vehicle with thejack in a location other than theplace specified in the illustrationnear the wheel to be changed.

• Make sure that the jack is raisedat least 2 inches (51 mm) beforeit contacts the vehicle. Use of thejack when it is within 2 inches ofbeing fully collapsed may result infailure of the jack.

1) Park the vehicle securely on hard levelground.

2) Choke the front and rear wheeldiagonally opposite the wheel to bechanged.

3) Switch on the hazard warning flasherif your vehicle is in or near traffic.

4) Slacken but do not remove wheel nutson the wheel to be changed.

5) Position the jack vertically and raisethe jack by turning the jack handleclockwise until the jack head fits thefront suspension arm or spring seat onrear axle.

6) Continue to raise the jack slowly andsmoothly until the tyre clears theground. Do not raise the vehicle morethan necessary.

JUMP STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTIONFor fuel injection models• Vehicle equipped with electronic

fuel injection system will not startby pushing or towing as the fuelpump will not work in thiscondition. This starting methodcould also result in permanentdamage to the catalytic converter.Use jump leads to start a vehiclewith a weak or flat battery.

• When making jump leadconnections, be certain that yourhands and the jump leads remainclear from pulleys, belts, or fans.

• Batteries produce flammablehydrogen gas. Keep flames andsparks away from the battery oran explosion may occur. Neversmoke when working in thevicinity of the battery.

When jump starting your vehicle, usethe following procedure:1) Use only a 12 volt battery to jump

start your vehicle. Position the good12V battery close to your vehicle sothat the jump leads will reach bothbatteries. When using a batteryinstalled on another vehicle, DO NOTLET THE VEHICLES TOUCH. Applythe parking brakes fully on bothvehicles.

2) Turn off all vehicle accessories, exceptthose necessary for safety reasons (forexample, headlights or hazard lights).

3) Make jump lead connections as follows:a) Connect one end of the first jump

lead to the positive (+) terminal ofthe flat battery.

b) Connect the other end to the positive(+) terminal of the booster battery.

c) Connect one end of the secondjump lead to the negative (-)terminal of the booster battery.

d) Make the final connection to anunpainted, heavy metal part of theengine of the vehicle with the flatbattery.

w WARNINGNever connect the jump lead directlyto the negative (-) terminal of thedischarged battery, or an explosionmay occur.

4) If the booster battery you are using isfitted to another vehicle, start theengine of the vehicle with the boosterbattery. Run the engine at moderatespeed.

5) Start the engine of the vehicle with theflat battery.

6) Remove the jump leads in the exactreverse order in which you connectedthem.

CAUTION

TOWING

To help avoid damage to your vehicleduring towing, proper equipment andtowing procedures must be used.

If the steering and drivetrain are in goodcondition, your vehicle should be towedfrom the rear with the rear wheels liftedand the front wheels on the ground. Yourvehicle may be towed from the front withthe front wheels lifted and dolly under rearwheels. Before towing, make sure thesteering is unlocked and the transmissionis in neutral.

If you need to have your vehicle towed,contact a professional service.

EMERGENCY REMEDIES

If the Starter Does Not Operate:1) Try turning the ignition switch to the

“START” position with the headlightsturned on to determine the batterycondition. If the headlights go excessivelydim or go off, it usually means that eitherthe battery is flat or the battery terminalcontact is poor. Recharge the battery orcorrect battery terminal contact asnecessary.

2) If the headlights remain bright, check thefuses. If the reason for failure of thestarter is not obvious, there may be amajor electrical problem. Have the vehicleinspected by your authorized MARUTISUZUKI dealer.

If the Engine is FloodedIf the engine is flooded with petrol, it may behard to start. If this happens, press theaccelerator pedal all the way to the floor andhold it there while cranking the engine. (Do notoperate the starter motor for more than 5seconds). Release the accelarator as soon asthe engine has started.

the Engine OverheatsThe engine could overheat temporarily undersevere driving conditions. If the engine cool-ant temperature gauge indicates overheatingduring driving:

1) Turn off the air conditioner, if equipped.2) Take the vehicle to a safe place and park.

3) Let the engine run at normal idle speedfor a few minutes until the indicator iswithin the normal, acceptable temperaturerange between “H” and “C”.

If you see or hear escaping steam.stop the vehicle in a safe place andimmediately turn off the engine to letit cool. Do not open the bonnet whensteam is present. When the steam canno longer be seen or heard, removethe seats to see if the coolant is tillboiling. if it is, you must wait until itstops boiling before you proceed.

If the temperature indication does notcome down to within the normal, acceptablerange:

1) Turn off the engine and check thatthe water pump belt and pulleys arenot damaged or slipping. If anyabnormality is found, correct it.

2) Check the coolant level in thereservoir. If it is found to be lowerthan the “LOW” line, look for leaks atthe radiator, water pump, and radiatorhoses. If you locate any leaks thatmay have caused the overheating, donot run the engine until theseproblems have been corrected.

3) If you do not find a leak, carefully addcoolant to the reservoir and then theradiator, if necessary. (Refer to“ENGINE COOLANT” in the“INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE”section.)

WARNING TRIANGLE

In case of vehicle break-down or duringemergency stopping where your vehiclecould become a potential traffic hazard,keep the warning triangle, provided withyour vehicle, on the road free from anyobstacles behind your vehicle so as towarn the approaching traffic, at anapproximate distance of 50-100m, thereflecting side of the triangle should face theon coming traffic. Please activate the hazardwarning lamps before alighting the vehicle tokeep the warning triangle.

To help prevent personal injury, keephands, tools and clothing away fromthe engine cooling fan and air-conditioner fan (if equipped). Theseelectric fans can automatically turn onwithout warning.

Remove the warning triangle carefully fromthe box as shown by arrow 1.

Open both the reflector arms as shownby arrows and lock arms with eachother with the clip provided in the rightarm. Open the bottom stand in counterclock-wise direction as shown by arrow3. Position the warning triangle behind thevehicle on a plain surface.

Reverse the removal procedure forkeeping inside the box.

CORROSION PREVENTION

It is important to take good care of yourvehicle to protect it from corrosion.Listed below are instructions for how tomaintain your vehicle to prevent corrosion.Please read and follow these instructionscarefully.Important Information About CorrosionCommon causes of corrosion1) Accumulation of road salt, dirt, moisture,

or chemicals in hard to reach areas ofthe vehicle underbody or frame.

2) Chipping, scratches and any damageto treated or painted metal surfacesresulting from minor accidents orabrasion by stones and gravel.

Environmental conditions whichaccelerate corrosion1) Road salt, dust control chemicals, sea

air or industrial pollution will allaccelerate the corrosion of metal.

2) High humidity will increase the rate ofcorrosion particularly when thetemperature range is just above thefreezing point.

3) Moisture in certain areas of a vehiclefor an extended period of time maypromote corrosion even though otherbody sections may be completely dry.

4) High temperatures will cause anaccelerated rate of corrosion to parts

of the vehicle which are not wellventilated to permit quick drying.

This information illustrates the necessity ofkeeping your vehicle (particularly theunderbody) as clean and dry as possible. Itis equally important to repair any damage tothe paint or protective coatings as soon aspossible.

How to Help Prevent CorrosionWash your vehicle frequentlyThe best way to preserve the finish on yourvehicle and to help avoid corrosion is tokeep it clean with frequent washing.Wash your vehicle regularly during thewinter and immediately after the winter.Keep your vehicle, particularly theunderside, as clean and dry as possible.If you frequently drive on salted roads, yourvehicle should be washed at least once amonth during the winter. If you live nearthe ocean, your vehicle should be washedat least once a month throughout the year.For washing instructions, refer to the“VEHICLE CLEANING” section.

Remove foreign material depositsForeign material such as salts, chemicals,road oil or tar, tree sap, bird droppings andindustrial fall-out may damage the finish ofyour vehicle if it is left on painted surfaces.

Remove these types of deposits as quicklyas possible. If these deposits are difficultto wash off, an additional cleaner may berequired. Be sure that any cleaner you useis not harmful to painted surfaces and isspecifically intended for your purposes.Follow the manufacturer’s directions whenusing these special cleaners.Repair finish damageCarefully examine your vehicle for damageto the painted surfaces. Should you findany chips or scratches in the paint, touchthem up immediately to prevent corrosionfrom starting. If the chips or scratches havegone through to the bare metal, have aqualified body shop make the repair.Keep Passenger and luggagecompartments clean.Moisture, dirt or mud can accumulate underthe floor mats and may cause corrosion.Occasionally, check under these mats toensure that this area is clean and dry.More frequent checks are necessary if thevehicle is used off road or in wet weather.Certain cargos such as chemicals,fertilizers, cleaners, salts, etc., areextremely corrosive by nature. Theseproducts should be transported in sealedcontainers. If a spill or leak does occur,clean and dry the area immediately.

Store your vehicle in a dry, well-ventilatedarea.Do not park your vehicle in a damp, poorlyventilated area. If you often wash yourvehicle in the garage or if you frequentlydrive it in when wet, your garage may bedamp. The high humidity in the garage maycause or accelerate corrosion. A wetvehicle may corrode even in a heatedgarage if the ventilation is poor.

VEHICLE CLEANING

fabric cleaner for tougher stains. If you usea fabric cleaner, carefully follow themanufacturer’s instructions and precautions.

Seat BeltsClean seat belts with a mild soap andwater. Do not use bleach or dye on thebelts. They may weaken the fabric in thebelts.

Vinyl floor matsOrdinary dirt can be removed from vinylwith water or mild soap. Use a brush tohelp loosen dirt. After the dirt is loosened,rinse the mat thoroughly with water and dryit in the shade.

CarpetsRemove dirt and soil as much as possiblewith a vacuum cleaner. Using a mild soapsolution, rub stained areas with a cleandamp cloth. To remove soap, rub the areasagain with a cloth dampened with water.Repeat this until the stain is removed, oruse a commercial carpet cleaner fortougher stains. If you use a carpet cleaner,carefully follow the manufacturer’sinstructions and precautions.

Do not apply additional undercoatingor rust preventive coating on oraround exhaust system componentssuch as the exhaust pipes, etc. A firecould be started if the undercoatingsubstance becomes overheated.

Cover your vehicleIf you cannot regularly park your vehicle ina garage, we recommend you use avehicle cover. Years of exposure to middaysun can cause the colours in paint, plasticparts, and fabrics to fade. Covering yourvehicle with a high-quality, “breathable”vehicle cover can help protect the finishfrom the harmful UV rays in sunlight, andcan reduce the amount of dust and airpollution reaching the surface.

When cleaning the interior or exteriorof the vehicle, NEVER USE flammablesolvents such as lacquer thinners,petrol, benzene or cleaning materialssuch as bleach or strong householddetergents. The materials could causepersonal injury or damage to thevehicle.

Cleaning the InteriorVinyl upholsteryPrepare a solution of soap or mild deter-gent mixed with warm water. Apply thesolution to the vinyl with a sponge or softcloth and let it soak for a few minutes toloosen dirt. Rub the surface with a clean,damp cloth to remove dirt and the soapsolution. If some dirt still remains on thesurface, repeat this procedure.

Fabric upholsteryRemove loose dirt with a vacuum cleaner.Using a mild soap solution, rub stainedareas with a clean damp cloth. To removesoap, rub the areas again with a clothdampened with water. Repeat this until thestain is removed, or use a commercial

Cleaning the Exterior When washing the vehicle, follow theinstructions below:

1) Flush the underside of body and wheelhousings with pressurized water toremove mud and debris. Use plenty ofwater.

4) Once the dirt has been completelyremoved, rinse off the detergent withrunning water.

5) After rinsing, wipe off the vehicle bodywith a wet chamois or cloth and allowit to dry in the shade.

6) Check carefully for damage to paintedsurfaces. If there is any damage,“Touchup” the damage following theprocedure below:

a) Clean all damaged spots and allowthem to dry.

b) Stir the paint and “touchup” thedamaged spots lightly using asmall brush.

c) Allow the paint to dry completely.

WaxingAfter washing the vehicle, waxing andpolishing are recommended to furtherprotect and beautify the paint.

• Only use waxes and polishes of goodquality.

• When using waxes and polishes,observe the precautions specified bythe manufacturers.

It is important that your vehicle be keptclean and free from dirt. Failure to keepyour vehicle clean may result in fad-ing of the paint or corrosion to var-ious parts of the vehicle body.

Washing

• Never attempt to wash and waxyour vehicle with the enginerunning.

• When cleaning the underside ofthe body and fender, where theremay be sharp-edged parts, youshould wear gloves and alongsleeved shirt to protect yourhands and arms from being cut.

• After washing your vehicle,carefully test the brakes beforedriving to make sure they havemaintained their normaleffectiveness.

When washing the vehicle, avoiddirecting steam or hot water of morethan 800C (1760F) on plastic parts.

2) Remove dirt and mud from the bodyexterior with running water. You mayuse a soft sponge or brush. Do notuse hard materials which can scratchthe paint.

3) Wash the entire exterior with a milddetergent or car wash soap using asponge or soft cloth. The sponge orcloth should be frequently soaked inthe soap solution.

When using a commercial car washproduct, observe the cautionsspecified by the manufacturer. Neveruse strong household detergents orsoaps.
