Magillican’s Island, RYPEN, CROE-4 and ”The Project that Enthuses” leads to an overfull program for a one

hour breakfast meeting.

Jim Bond from Stradbroke Scouts briefed us on clothing, sustenance and safety issues in preparation for the

Club’s kayaking expedition to Magillican’s Island somewhere out on the Port River next Sunday. GPS

directions for this destination however are still proving elusive.

The Club has been successful in recruiting four great students for this year’s Rotary (Australia) Youth

Program of Enrichment or RYPEN at Woodhouse in late April and the Unley RC is keen to support two. The

two M’s representing MS are Michael Capoccia and Melissa Carlesso and we look forward to them joining us

for breakfast next Tuesday.

The Campbelltown RC plans to go bush in October for their CROE-4 outback bash and, after considerable

concern about how to avoid soggy sandwiches, members accepted Campbelltown’s invitation for our Club to

gastronomically prepare and launch the expedition to the outback.

Time limited our discussions, but it became clear that another requirement for our international program is

that it lends itself to the Club being able to successfully compete for a RI matching grant. The issue of the

ideal project having the scope to include a hands-on/working party component was also aired.

stay on for an afternoon paddle if the weather is fine. Further details are attached

Speaking at the Rotary Club Luncheon on Friday, Brigadier-General S. Price Weir said he believed

the original "diggers," the name which was eventually applied to all Australian troops, were the

men in the 10th Battalion from Broken Hill, commanded by Colonel Jacob. Many of them were

miners, and their services were greatly in request during the early days on Gallipoli for digging

trenches. He as commanding officer of the 10th Battalion was often asked for a loan of some of the

diggers and the term appeared to spread until it included all Australian troops.
