Thehomeat739SouthMainwasbuiltin1910byDavidRiceBrickyWilliams(1869-1952).

BrickywasbornOctober2,1869,inKansas.HewasamasonrycontractorandhadbeensecretaryofthebricklayersunioninSheridanformanyyears.HewasamemberoftheFirstPresbyterianChurch.BrickywasmarriedtoJaneEllenWilliams.ShewasbornFebruary20,1882,atBethesda,NorthWales.ShewastwowhenherparentsmovedtoMt.Carmel,Pennsylvania.TheyreturnedtoWalesin1894.In1905,JanewasvisitingsomerelativesinDenverwhenshemetBricky.ShemarriedhimonSeptember6,1906.Shewas24,Brickywas36.JanejoinedtheFirstPresbyterianChurch,whereshepreparedcommunionforover60yearsandfor32yearssangwiththeChoir.ShewasamemberofPEOformorethan50yearsandwasamemberoftheSheridanWomensclubfor45years.ItappearsthatJanewasinvolvedwithmorethanjusttheChurch'scommunion.

In1998,thepresentownerwasinthecrawlspaceunderthefarthestnorthwestcornerofthehouse,wherehefoundametalenvelope,containingletterswrappedintarpaper.TheletterswerefromReverendJ.OrrinGould("Mr.CurleyTease"),thepastorattheFirstBaptistChurch(1916-1919),andtheywerewrittentoJane(MissCloseClasper")...".Janemusthavehiddenthem,longago.

Itappearsthatsometimearound1918thetwowereinsomekindof

relationship,basedonthesteamycontentoftheletters.JaneslylypickedthemupattheoldWesternHotel.

BrickyandJanehadadaughter,Isabel,whowasbornin1907.ShemarriedCarletonCollinofPittsburgh,anddiedDecember18,1933fromanillness.Youcanstillseeglimpsesoftheyellowpaintintheroomthatwasmostlikelyherbedroom.Brickypassedawayin1952.Janesoldthehousein1962,andshepassedawayin

1982.ThehousewaspurchasedbytheBokenkrogers,thenthePaulsens,andthentheBurrows,andthentheAbernathas,andatsometimewasconvertedinto3apartments.Eventually,BillFry,founderofFryConstruction,purchasedit.HesoldittoRodFordahl,whowasthenafairlynewemployeewithalittleboy,butwhoalsosubsequentlyboughtFryConstruction.RodandKristenCogswellraisedtheirtwochildren,BenandIan,inthehome,andhavecompletelyenjoyedlivinghere!Features

Oneofthemostsignificantfeaturesofthehouseisthemasonry.Brickyusedthreedifferentvarietiesofbrickinthehome,usingasheen-facedbrickfortheexterior,a

mottledfleckstoneforthemainfloorfireplace,andarichbrownbrickforthelowerlevelfireplace.Thehousehas"quoins",oradditionalmasonryblocksjuttingfromthefrontcorners,alongwithmasonry"necklaces"accentingthewindows.Ithasathick,brickwallrunningthroughthecenterofthehouseonboththegardenlevelandfirstfloor.ThetrimthroughouttheuppertwofloorsofthehouseisDouglasfir.Thegardenlevelandmainflooreachhasmaplefloors,andtheupstairsfloorsarefir.Thehouseis4500squarefeet,withadaylightbasementthatmirrorsthemainfloor.LivingRoom

Thelivingroomhasarebuiltcolonnade.Thesupportingbeamacrossthetopwasmadefromtheoriginal,foundinthecrawlspace.Ifyoulookcloselyatthewallandtriminthediningroom,especiallyonthesouthside,youcanseewheretheoriginalshelfplatewasmounted.Thefireplaceisfittedwithagasinsert.

Kitchen

Thekitchenwasremodeledin2008.Thestoveisinduction,whichresultsinsuperfastheating,safetobrieflytouchwhenon.Thereisawarmingdrawerandconvectionovenandconvectionmicrowave,andaBoschdishwasher.Therearegranitecountertops,woodcabinets,andalargepantryroom.

UpstairsBedrooms

Thehomeatonetimewasconvertedintoanapartmentbuilding.Thefrontbedroomservedasalivingroom,andthelaundryareawasthekitchen.Thepresentownersconvertedtheapartmentbackto3bedrooms,restoredthe

bathroom,andaddedashower/laundry/closetarea.UpstairsBath

Thereisabathtubroomwiththeoriginalporcelainclawfoottubandsink,andaTototoilet.Thereisalsoalaundry/showerroomthathasabuilt-inironingboard,vanityandwalk-inshower,withsunrisewindowsoverlookingthetown,andalargecloset.TheroomhascableTVsothewholefamilycanentertainthemselveswhilegetting

readyforworkorschool.Italsohasatowelwarmer.

Thefloorsinthebedroomsandbathroomareasarefir.Thehallwayandstairsarecarpeted,withalargeremnantfromtheformerOliver'sBar&Grill,purchasedafteritwasoriginallyremodeledfromInteriorImages.TheDownstairs

Thedownstairsareahasa2daylightsideswithfullwindows.Thelivingroomarea

hasawood-burningbrownbrickfireplaceandapooltable,withanexitdoorleadingtoa"mudroom",thefurnace&hotwaterheaterroom,andtheoutsideporch.Thedownstairsalsohasabathroomwithashower,abookroom,awineroomwithastainedconcretefloor,abedroom,andanareaforcraftsorwhateverthathasbeenwiredforakitchen,ifoneiseverwanteddownthere.Otherfeatures

Brickybuiltthelittlebrickcottageat741SouthMainbeforebuildinghisbighouse.HeboughtthelandfromLuraandE.W.Parrfor$500.00in1908.TheParrshad

boughtthelandfromLincolnLandCompany,whohadsubdivideditin1892.PriortothatitwasownedbyLymanandKateBrooks,andbeforethatFrankH.Kilbourne,whoreceiveditinadeedcontaining160acresfor$200.00,fromPresidentBenjaminHarrisonin1884.ThechainoftitleincludesE.A.andGladysEccles,B.T.andMarieMcManus,andBeverlyandBruceBadley,eventuallybeingownedbyCherieandMickAnderson,whoraisedtheirchildrenthere(andwhoseupstairsplayareaisstillreferredtoas"thecrittercloset").RodandKrisboughtthehousefromthemsotheywouldhaveabiggeryard,andtheyrenovateditandmadeitalawoffice.Itisnowrented,onlytocharmingandneighborlypeople.Thecottageismadefromyetafourthkindofbrick,mostlikelyfromtheSheridanBrickCompany.Theupstairsfloorsarefir,andthedownstairsfloorsareoak.Ithasagreatyard.
