Nine clubs have already booked their places in the round of 16 and are led by hold- ers Bayern Munich, while oth- ers include past winners Bar- celona, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Juventus, Liverpool and FC Porto. There are 13 clubs in five groups chasing the remaining places. The most intriguing is Group H in which Manchester United, aſter losing 3-1 at home to Paris St Germain last weekend, are now in danger of missing out. They need only draw in Ger- many against RB Leipzig to- night to go through and did beat Leipzig 5-0 at home last month, but the Red Devils’ inconsisten- cy means nothing can be taken for granted. If Leipzig win, then United will drop down to UEFA Europa League in a huge financial set- back that might well cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job. The one remaining place in Group F will also be seled to- night, when Lazio host Club Brugge of Belgium needing just to draw. But they are more like- ly to win and might end up even taking top place in the pool ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Tomorrow there is a straight shootout between Salzburg and Atletico Madrid to finish sec- ond in Group A and the home side must win to knock Atletico out of the top two. That would seem a bridge too far even if Salzburg is brimming with ex- citing young talent. In Group B Real Madrid are the heavyweight contenders on the brink of elimination, al- though all four clubs are still in contention. Real must beat Borussia Monchengladbach, while the German visitors need at least a draw. Inter Milan must bear Shakhtar Donetsk to come from boom place and grab a berth in the last 16. The smart move for TAB soccer customers will be to go for two home wins. The remaining place is the knockout stage will be deter- mined in Group D, in which Ajax Amsterdam must beat Atalanta to advance or other- wise the Italians go through. They have now scored just 10 league goals in 11 matches this season, but Arteta says he isn't panicking. “We created enough situations to score goals and they will come," he said. “Very simply, we need to score goals. Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Spurs in the North Lon-don Derby yesterday has seen Mikel Arteta shorten to 3-1 to be the

next English Premier League manager to be sacked.

Only a week ago the Spaniard, who came to Arsenal with no pre-vious experience as a manager, was 40-1 in the next-to-be-fi red be ing.

Sheffi eld United boss Chris Wilder remains 7-4 favourite af-ter his team’s worst start in EPL history with just one point a er 11 games.

Arsenal have won just one of their last seven matches and are 15th in the table - their worst start since 1981.

K aizer Chiefs at home to Black Leopards used to be a routine three points, but

given how much the AmaK-hosi have slumped in perfor-mance and prestige of late, victory for them tomorrow at Soccer City is no guaran-tee.

Failure to score on Sat-urday against their Cam-eroonian opponents, who

had only arrived to play hours before the kick off of the African Champions League match, was further evidence, if needed, of the powder-puff a ack at coach Gavin Hunt’s disposal.

At least they have now managed successive clean sheets, but Chiefs languish in 13th place in the PSL standings with fi ve points from as many matches.

Leopards have fared even worse with only three points and have already changed their coach.

Last season they made a record-equalling six coach-ing changes through the season and needed the post-season promotion-relegation playoff s to see them survive. They will not be favourites, but they are certainly capable of creat-ing an upset.

This re-scheduled league game is one of only two en-counters on the domestic football scene this week.

Orlando Pirates will; start as favourites against Bloemfontein Celtic for Sat-

urday’s MTN8 fi nal, which is being played in Durban.

They are looking bet-ter organised and are very quick on a ack with an impressive high-pressing game, although their fi nish-ing still leaves much to be desired.

That said they are look-ing to end six seasons with-out a trophy and should be far too strong for their Free State rivals, so count on them to win in TAB soccer pools like Soccer 6 and Soc-cer 10.

No walkover for Chiefs

“It’s disappointing again. Geez, we can’t be missing the chances we missed, the opportu-nities we get in front of goals. I don’t think in all my 30 years as a coach I have ever seen an-ything like it. But the most important thing was to get through.”A frustrated Gavin Hunt after his Kaiz-er Chiefs side progressed to the second round of the African Champions League at the weekend.

* "Manuel Neuer is 34 now, and he’s just get-ting be er and be er. He’s like a red wine that matures each year. He anticipates pre y much every shot, wherever it comes from, and makes the save. We’ve seen that in the last couple of weeks in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. He’s the best goal-keeper in the world, I think he’s even the best goalkeeper of all time. We’ve always had good goalkeepers in Germany, at Bayern, when you talk about Sepp Meyer or Oliver Kahn, but I think Manuel Neuer has taken goalkeeping to a new level, and we’re really happy that he’s lining up between the sticks for us." Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on his No. 1.

M1 Ajax Amsterdam vs Atalanta: Ajax and Atalanta are vying to join Champions League Group D winners Liverpool in the last 16 when they meet in Amsterdam in the fi nal round of matches. Only a win will do for the Dutch side while a draw will be enough for Atalanta.

M2 FC Midtjylland vs Liverpool: The Dan-ish side, already certain to come last in their Champions League group, got their fi rst point last week thanks to a 1-1 draw at Ata-lanta. That was on the same night Liverpool beat Ajax 1-0 to open up an unassailable four-point advantage at the top of the table.

M3 Salzburg vs Atletico Madrid: Salzburg and Atlético are in a showdown for second place in Champions League Group A. Salz-burg need to beat their Spanish visitors to progress to the knockout phase for the fi rst time, while a draw will suit Atlético, who have never lost to Austrian opponents.

M4 Olympiakos vs FC Porto: This is the eighth meeting between the two clubs, with all the previous six before this season com-ing in a two-year period from 1997 to 1999. The home side has triumphed in all but one game overall.

M5 Real Madrid vs Borussia Mönchenglad-bach: Both sides were beaten in Champions League last week, Madrid going down 2-0 at Shakhtar Donetsk while Mönchengladbach lost a fi ve-goal thriller at home to Inter. That le the German club on eight points, two ahead of Madrid and Shakhtar with Inter (at home to the Ukrainian side on the fi nal day) on fi ve.

M6 Manchester City vs Olympique Mar-seille: Manchester City are already assured of fi rst place in Group C, while Marseille are still in the hunt for the group’s Europa League qualifying slot, having ended their record run of UEFA Champions League de-feats in their last match.

M1 Sparta Prague vs AC Milan: Milan are now unbeaten in seven matches against Sparta with fi ve wins and have kept clean sheets in each of their three matches in Prague.

M2 Glasgow Celtic vs Lille: Celtic's underwhelming UEFA Europa League Group H campaign ends with a home game against Lille, who have already booked their passage to the knockout phase and have their sights set on a third successive away win.

M3 Dinamo Zagreb vs CSKA Mos-cow: Already through to the knockout phase as Group K winners, Dinamo Zagreb will be eyeing a piece of Europa League history. The Croatian champi-ons have not conceded a goal in their fi ve group matches and no club has yet completed a Europa League group with six clean sheets.

M4 TSG 1899 Hoff enheim vs AA Gent: Top plays bo om in Group L as Hof-fenheim, confi rmed group winners,

host Ghent. The visitors have suff ered fi ve defeats out of fi ve and will want to avoid joining the small band of teams who have suff ered a Europa League whitewash.

M5 Leicester City vs AEK Athens: Having surrendered their unbeat-en record in the Europa League on Matchday 5, Leicester City will be keen to make it three home wins out of three in Group G as they host elimi-nated AEK Athens.

M6 Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Sivasspor: Maccabi Tel Aviv and Sivasspor go head to head with a place in the round of 32 at stake as Group I runners-up. The Israeli champions have eight points, two more than Sivasspor. Maccabi will therefore qualify if they avoid defeat, whereas the Turkish group-stage debutants can only leap-frog their hosts into second place with a victory.

M7 PFC Ludogorets Razgard vs LASK Linz: While Ludogorets and LASK are both out of contention in the Europa League, the Bulgarian champions will want to avoid exiting the competition

with another Europa League defeat. They have lost all fi ve of their Group J fi xtures.

M8 Sporting Braga vs Zorya Lu-hansk: Braga have already qualifi ed for the round of 32 in Europa League and will be looking to close their Group G campaign with a fourth vic-tory as they host Zorya Luhansk, who are eliminated but have won their last two group games.

M9 To enham Hotspur vs Antwerp: To enham and Antwerp have both already sealed their place in the next round of Europa League, but this game will decide who fi nishes top of Group J. Spurs must make it three home wins out of three to top the group, whereas Antwerp have to avoid a fi rst away de-feat to hold on to their position.

M10 Wolfsburger AC vs Feyenoord Ro erdam: Wolfsburger moved ahead of Feyenoord into second place in Group K last week and will advance in the Europa League for the fi rst time if they can avoid defeat against the famous Dutch club, who must win to qualify.

Normally TAB soccer customers wouldn’t think twice about making Kaizer Chiefs at home a banker to beat Black Leopards in TAB pools but nowadays it’s not so simple

By Mark Gleeson

T he MTN8 quarter-finals provided a tasty curtain-raiser, but the real business begins

this weekend with the kick-off of the new DStv PSL campaign.

All the traditional con-tenders for the title have shown their hand this past weekend with champi-ons Mamelodi Sundowns beaten; Kaizer Chiefs still scrambling and Orlando

Pirates not overly convinc-ing.

SuperSport United also threw their hat into the ring, but it is hard to see any other challengers coming out.

Now we get to see the supporting cast and new clubs like Swallows and TS Galaxy. As usual, this season’s battle against rel-egation is going to be fas-cinating. The many teams expected to struggle in-clude Baroka, Black Leop-ards and Chippa United.

This weekend Chiefs host Sundowns at Soc-cer City in a potentially dramatic start to the league campaign. It was just weeks ago that their meeting in the bio-bub-ble proved crucial in the last league season, but there has been a dramatic change of actors in both camps with new coaching teams and a bevy of new faces.

AmaZulu against Pi-rates is the pick of Sun-day’s fixtures and the kind

of match that the Bucca-neers must win if they are to properly challenge for the title this season.

Various TAB carryovers add spice to the entertain-ment - there are mega Soc-cer 13 add-ins midweek and on Saturday, as well as Soccer 13 Xtra and Any-15 carryovers and a guaran-teed R700,000 MegaStrike 10 pool.

All offer more great chances for TAB soccer customers to cash in on their soccer knowledge!

Now it’s the real action

“It was a tough game against a strong opponent who played fi ercely a er conceding an early goal. I thank our goalkeeper El Shenawy for his penalty save, and all the players for playing to our plan. I’m happy with the result, but I would have been much happier had we scored more goals. We have won nothing yet and have to focus on the return leg.”Pitso Mosimane a er his Al Ahly team won 2-0 away against Wydad Casablanca in the fi rst leg of their Champions League semi-fi nal.

"I think fi rst half we were still on the bus, we were all over the show. We were pulled apart. I'm trying to in-stil a couple of things, but it's diffi cult in a week and a half. And then I made the changes which it was inevi-table to do. We changed the shape a bit. But you know, we showed a bit of grit. I'm trying to instil the mental-ity into the team. That's the most important thing.”Gavin Hunt a er Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal down to beat Maritzburg United on Sunday and give the new AmaKhosi coach a winning debut.

“Of course, I have to analyse the second half and I have to do it internally, but for you I prefer to say that foot-ball happened and I prefer to praise West Ham’s be-lief. It’s not easy to be 3-0 down and to keep this belief. Of course, to concede three goals and lose that advan-tage is a big punishment.”Spurs manager Jose Mourinho’s reaction a er his team let a three-goal lead slip in the fi nal 10 minutes and were held to a draw against West Ham on Sunday.

“With him it's constant provocation. I feel like I am at kindergarten, but that is part of his personality."The reaction of Arsene Wenger a er Jose Mourinho’s claim the ex-Arsenal manager made no mention of him in his autobiography because he never beat Mourinho in a match.

“I always say, if I was an animal, I would be an octopus. I remember when I was at Almería they called me ‘the octopus’ because I stole a lot of balls."Arsenal’s new midfi eld signing Thomas Partey.

M1 Zenit St Petersburg v Club Brugge: Having both failed to get out of their respective UEFA Champions League sections in 2019-20, Zenit and Club Brugge will be keen to make a positive start to their latest aª empts to reach the round of 16 when they meet in St Petersburg in the fi rst round of Group F fi xtures.

M2 Dynamo Kyiv v Juventus: Andrea Pirlo's Ju-ventus side travel to Ukraine for his fi rst Cham-pions League game as a coach. The game pits him against Mircea Lucescu, who helped launch his playing career 25 years ago.

M3 Chelsea v Sevilla: The winners of the last two editions of the UEFA Europa League meet in the fi rst round of Group E games in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League. This is the fi rst meet-ing between the clubs.

M4 Lazio v Borussia Dortmund: Lazio are in the Champions League group stage for the fi rst time in 13 years and begin life in Group F at home to experienced contenders Borussia Dortmund. While the Italian club last featured at this stage in 2007-08, Dortmund are embarking on their fi h successive Champions League campaign.

M5 Paris St Germain v Manchester United:Ligue 1 champions for the seventh time in eight years in 2019-20, and ninth time overall, PSG also won both domestic cups last season. This is the French side's ninth successive UEFA Cham-pions League campaign and 13th in total. Unit-ed’s last trip to Paris was a rollicking 3-1 win in March last year.

M6 RB Leipzig v Istanbul Basaksehir: Basakse-hir make their debut in the Champions League group stage away at Leipzig, themselves rela-tive newcomers to the competition albeit hav-ing reached last season's semi-fi nals on just their second appearance. This is the pair's fi rst meeting, which is liª le surprise given they have played only 64 European matches between them.

M1 Salzburg v Lokomotiv Moscow: Salzburg have come through the Cham-pions League qualifying phase for the fi rst time since 1994. The Moscow club have lost 11 of their last 13 Champions League group matches, winning the oth-er two.

M2 Real Madrid v Shakhtar Donetsk: Both sides have suff ered early Champi-ons League exits in the last two seasons. Madrid were eliminated in the last-16 in both 2018-19 and 2019-20, with Shakhtar twice fi nishing third in their section and going into the UEFA Europa League.

M3 Watford v Blackburn Rovers: Wat-ford were 1-0 winners at Derby on Friday and Blackburn lost at home the next day to strugglers Noª ingham Forest.

M4 Queens Park Rangers v Preston North End: QPR have drawn their past three matches, while Preston have lost

three of their last four matches.

M5 Bayern Munich v Atletico Madrid: Bayern made history last season, win-ning every game en route to claiming their sixth European Cup by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the fi nal - the fi rst team to li the trophy with a per-fect record of victories. The sides each recorded a 1-0 win when they last met in the 2016-17 group stage.

M6 Inter Milan v Borussia Moncheng-ladbach: Second in Serie A last season, a point behind champions Juventus, In-ter were the last Italian team to win the UEFA Champions League, in 2010. This is Gladbach's third Champions League group stage appearance. Both previous participations ended in early elimina-tion.

M7 Manchester City v Porto: While Pep Guardiola's charges once again failed to get past the last-eight last season, Porto missed out on the group stage for the fi rst time since 2010-11. Their record in England, where they have never won, does not inspire confi dence.

M8 Olympiakos P v Olympique Mar-seille: In last season’s Champions League, Olympiakos fi nished third in their group behind eventual champions Bayern Munich and Toª enham. Mar-seille are making their tenth appear-ance in the Champions League group stage, but their fi rst since 2013-14.

M9 Ajax Amsterdam v Liverpool: Sur-prisingly given their prestigious Euro-pean histories, the clubs have met only once in European club competition tie, Ajax recording a 7-3 aggregate win in the 1966-67 European Champion Clubs Cup second round. The Dutch side were 5-1 winners in Amsterdam before a 2-2 draw at Anfi eld.

M10 FC Midtjylland v Atalanta: Midtjylland's fi rst game in the UEFA Champions League group stage pits them against Atalanta, who made a sig-nifi cant impact in their UCL debut last season. Atalanta will be eager to build on that remarkable eff ort, which took them as far as the quarter-finals and a dramatic late defeat.

POOL OF THE WEEK R2 TO PLAY RECORD PAYOUT R2.1 MILLION!

¢ MTN8 quarters got soccer fans back in the groove and now it’s time for the main act as the DStv PSL kicks off By Mark Gleeson
