As soon as the month of Rab-un-Nr comes, springtimeprevails everywhere. The devotees of the Holy Prophet becomeexcited and delighted. It seems as if every true Muslim - whetheryoung or old - expresses this hearty feeling:

Nir tayr chaal paal par azr Edan Rab-ul-Awwal

When the darkness of disbelief and idolatry was prevalent inthe world, a Nr gleamed in the sacred house of Sayyidatunmina in Makka-tul-Mukarrama that brightenedthe entire universe. The Holy Prophet forwhom the troubled humanity was anxiously waiting dawned asMercy for all the worlds.

    Miracles

As soon as Allahs Nr ( ) dawned on the earthon 12th Rab-un-Nr, the dark clouds of oppression and disbeliefpurged, the palace of Kisr, which belonged to the Iranian king, was struck by an earthquake in which fourteen of its spikes fell

off, the flame which had been continuously blazing for onethousand years in Iran extinguished, the River Sava becamedry, the Kaba began to sway and idols fell on their heads.

Upon your advent, the Kaba swayedThe idols fell tremblingly being afraid

    (adiq-e-Bakhshish, pp. 41)

Beyond doubt, the Holy Prophet was sent as amercy and indeed, the day when Allahs mercy descends is aday of rejoicing. Allah has declared in the Holy Quran, part 11, Sra Ynus, Verse 58:

Say - you, Only Allahs grace and only His mercy, on it therefore

let them rejoice. That is better than all their wealth.

! The Quran is itself ordering us to rejoice over Allahsmercy, and Allahs greatest mercy is embodied in the HolyProphet as clearly mentioned in the HolyQuran, part 17, Sra Al-Anbiy, Verse 107:

And we sent you not, but a blessing for all worlds.

[Kanz-ul-mn (Translation of Quran)] (Part 17, Sra Anbiy, Verse 107)

    The night superior than Shab-e-Qadr

Sayyidun Shaykh Abdul aq Muaddi Dilv said, Indeed, the night of the birth of the Beloved and BlessedProphet is superior than even Shab-e-Qadr,which is one of the nights bestowed to the Holy Prophet

. In fact, the night whose greatness lies in the

advent of the Holy Prophet is more sacredthan the night whose greatness lies in the advent of the angels.

    (Mabata bis-Sunna, pp. 100)

    Eid of Eids

! The 12th of Rab-un-Nr is the Eid of all the Eids

for Muslims. Indeed, if the Holy Prophet hadnot come into this world, there would have been no Eid and noShab-e-Bar-at. In fact, all the glory and greatness of the world

    Ab Laab and Mld

After the death of Ab Laab, some of his family membersdreamed him in trouble. They asked how he was treated afterdeath. He replied, I did not receive any goodness after leavingyou. Then indicating towards the hole at underside of his

thumb, he said, Except this as I am fed with water from thisbecause I freed my slave girl, uwayba. (Muannaf Abdur Razzq,Vol. 9, pp. 9, ad 16661) (Umda-tul-Qr, Vol. 14, pp. 44, ad 5101)

    Muslims and Mld

Commenting on the foregoing narration, Sayyidun ShaykhAbdul aq Muaddi Dilv has stated, In thisincident there is credible evidence for those who celebrate thebirth of the Noble Prophet and spend their

wealth on this auspicious occasion. Ab Laab, who was astaunch unbeliever, was benefited due to rejoicing and freeinghis slave girl, uwayba, upon hearing the news of the blessedbirth of the Holy Prophet . Now imagine howgreat the reward will be for the Muslim spending his wealthwhole-heartedly on this occasion. However, it is necessary

to avoid songs and music in Mld gatherings. (Madrij-un-Nubwwa, Vol. 2, pp. 19)

Celebrate Mld enthusiasticallyDear Islamic brothers! Mark the blessed birth of the HolyProphet enthusiastically. Even a staunchdisbeliever like Ab Laab benefited due to expressing happinessover the birth of the Holy Prophet then whynot we - the Muslims will be blessed. Ab Laab rejoiced overthe birth of a nephew, not that of the Prophet of Allah, still hewas benefited. If we celebrate Mld out of love and admiration, how can we be deprived of reward?

While migrating to Madna, when the Beloved and BlessedProphet reached a place near Madna, knownas Maua-e-Ghamm, Burayda Aslam along with seventy

horsemen from the tribe of Ban Sam chased the caravan withthe intention of capturing the Holy Prophet but he himself got captivated in the love of the Holy Prophet

and embraced Islam. He said, Y Raslall! We will welcome you in Madna with flags. Therefore, thehorsemen took off their turbans, placed them on the top of

their spears and moved to Madna. (Waf-ul-Waf, Vol. 1, pp. 243)

earnings1 for the celebration of the birth of the Holy Prophet . When the month of Rab-un-Nr would

arrive, he used to celebrate Mld enthusiastically, abiding bythe commandments of Shara. He would distribute a lot offood among the people for the l-e-awb of the Holy Prophet

and subsidize his savings for righteous cause. His wife was also a great devotee of the Holy Prophet. She wouldalso co-operate with her husband with heart and soul in thatrighteous deed. After a few years, his wife passed away but hecontinued the act of celebrating Mld.

One day, Ibrm called his son and made his will, Dear son! I

will die tonight; I have 50 dirhams and 19 yards of cloth. Usethe cloth for my shroud and spend the money in any righteousdeed. Having said, he recited the Article of Faith and his soulleft his body. The son buried his father according to his willbut he was rather confused about spending the money hisfather left. When he slept that night, he dreamt that the Day ofJudgement had occurred and everyone was extremely frightened. The fortunate people were going towards the Heaven, whereasthe unfortunate ones were being dragged into Hell. He stoodshivering with fear as to what his destination would be!Meanwhile, an announcement was made, Let this young manenter the Heaven.

1 If only we would also save either 12% or at least 1% of our income for the celebration

of the birth of the Holy Prophet and for spending it in the promotionof religion.

Therefore, he entered the Heaven happily where he wanderedfearlessly. After visiting seven Heavens, when he reached theportal of the 8th Heaven, he was told that only those whocelebrated the birth of the Holy Prophet in theworld are allowed to enter this Heaven. Upon hearing that, heenvisioned that his parents would be there. A voice was thenheard, Let this young men enter; his parents want to meethim. Therefore, he went in and saw his mother sitting near thestream of Kawar. Nearby, there was a throne on which anhonourable lady was sitting. There were also some other chairson which many venerable ladies were sitting. He asked anangel, Who are they? The angel replied, The one sitting onthe throne is Sayyidatun Fima Zar and other ladies onthe chairs are Khadja-tul-Kubr, isha iddqa,Sayyidatun Maryam, Sayyidatun siya, Sayyidatun Sra,Sayyidatun jira, Sayyidatun Rbia and SayyidatunZubayda .He became very happy and resumed walking and saw an evenmore faith-refreshing scene. He saw a very big throne onwhich the Holy Prophet was seated. Aroundthe throne, there were four chairs upon which the Khulaf-e-Rshidn (the four righteous caliphs) were seated. On the right hand side, there were golden chairs upon whichthe Prophets were sitting and on the left, the martyrswere seated. The young man saw his father Ibrm amongst acrowd near the Holy Prophet . Ibrm hugged

The following morning, he sold his house and arranged a feast

using the money he received from selling his house along withhis fathers 50 dirhams. He invited Islamic scholars and piousMuslims and served them. As he was no longer interested inthe world, he decided to stay in a Masjid and spent the rest ofhis 30 years worshipping Allah .

After his death, someone saw him in a dream and asked whathad happened to him. He replied, With the blessings of celebratingMld, I have also received the same status which my father gotin Paradise. (Takira-tul-Win, pp. 557)

    Reward of celebrating Mld

Shaykh Abdul aq Muaddi Dilv has said,Those rejoicing on the night of the birth of the Holy Prophet

will enter Jannt-un-Nam by virtue of themercy of Allah . Muslims have always been celebrating the

birth of the Beloved and Blessed Prophet bycooking feasts, inviting guest and giving adaqa (alms) inabundance. They express their happiness, spend whole-heartedly, hold congregations for the celebration of the birth ofthe Holy Prophet , decorate their houses andAllah showers His blessings on them because of these

blessed deeds. (Mabata bis-Sunna, pp. 102)

    Jews embraced Islam

Sayyidun Abdul Wid Bin Isml narratedthat a great devotee of the Holy Prophet lived in Egypt. He

used to celebrate the birth of the Prophet withfull zeal and zest. A Jewish family lived in his neighbourhood. When the month of Rab-un-Nr arrived, the Jewish womanasked her husband, Why does our Muslim neighbour arrangesuch a big feast during this month? Her husband replied, Inthis month, his Prophet was born, therefore he does so to

celebrate his Prophets birth and Muslims honour this month alot. Upon hearing that, the wife said, It is a nice thing Muslimsdo by celebrating the birth of their Prophet every year.

When the Jewish lady went to sleep that night, she dreamt avery graceful and magnificent saint; there was a crowd of peoplearound him. She stepped forward and asked someone aboutthe noble saint. The person replied, He is the Last Prophet. Hehas come to meet and bless your neighbour for celebrating hisbirth. The Jewish woman then asked, Will he ( )talk to me? The person replied, Yes. The woman then called theHoly Prophet . The Prophet replied, Labbak (I am here). Impressed by the Holy Prophetsreply, she said, I am not a Muslim, and still you replied to me.The Holy Prophet said, Allah has toldme that you are going to embrace Islam very soon. Upon hearingthat, she spoke spontaneously, No doubt you are Merciful andCourteous Prophet; the one disobeying you will never succeedand the one not believing your lofty eminence will suffer loss. Then she recited Kalima Shada (Article of Faith).

When she awoke, she embraced Islam whole heartedly. Sheplanned to spend all her savings in the celebration of the birthof the Holy Prophet by serving meals to peoplein the morning. When she got up, she saw that her husbandwas busy preparing feast. She asked him in astonishment,What are you doing? He replied, I am making arrangementsfor a feast to celebrate your embracing of Islam. She asked,How did you get to know of this? He replied, Like you, I alsobeheld the Holy Prophet last night in dreamand I have also embraced Islam. (Takira-tul-Win, pp. 598)

, Dawat-e-Islami, a global non-political movementfor the propagation of Quran and Sunna, has a unique way ofcelebrating Mld. Huge congregations of Mld are held inmany different countries. In Karachi (Pakistan), probably thebiggest Mld Ijtim of the world is held every year. These areextremely spiritual congregations which have invoked Madan

revolution in the lives of thousands of sinners who have nowadopted the Sunna of the Holy Prophet . Readfour Madan marvels in this regard.

A devotee of the Prophet narrated: On the occasion of EidMld-un-Nab (1426 A.H.), a friend of mine who was extremelyfond of the latest fashions and away from al, attended theIjtim-e-Mld held at Kakri ground, Bb-ul-Madna, Karachi.

At the time of greeting ub-e-Barn (The Dawn of Blessings),everyone was reciting alt and Salm. My friend becameimpressed, he felt hatred for sins and made a firm intention tooffer al regularly and grow beard.

, abiding by his intentions he has not only started

offering al regularly but also has grown his beard. He had abad habit, which is inappropriate to mention, that he rid himselfof by virtue of the Ijtim. In other words, the patient sufferingfrom the lethal disease of sins has found the cure.

    2. The dirt of heart removed

The gist of a written statement given by an Islamic brother fromNorth Karachi is presented: During the first week of Rab-un-Nr, some devotees of the Prophet were making individualeffort and they invited me to attend Ijtim-e-Mld being held

at Kakri ground, Bb-ul-Madna, Karachi. It was my goodfortune that I assured them of my participation in the Ijtim. When the night of the 12th arrived, I kept my promise and saton the bus with all the other Islamic brothers who were alsoleaving for the Ijtim-e-Mld. A devotee of the Holy Prophethad some sweets called Cham Cham which he divided

approximately into thirty small pieces and distributed themequally among the brothers. I was really impressed by thataffectionate action. We later reached the Ijtim-e-Mld.

That was the first time in my life in which I saw such a splendidand spiritual Ijtim. The sound of Naat and Salm was

echoing in the atmosphere and people were chanting slogansenthusiastically Marab Y Mustafa ( ). I feltas if the spirituality of the Ijtim was gradually cleaning the

dirt of my heart. , I joined the Madan environmentof Dawat-e-Islami forthwith, by the grace of Allah , now Iwear a green turban and have grown my beard. I am presently

rendering my services as the Alq Nigrn of Dawat-e-Islamiin an area for spreading Sunnas.

On the occasion of Eid Mld-un-Nab (1417 A.H.), theprocession of Dawat-e-Islami (Nazimabad, Karachi) departedafter alt-u-ur. There were a large number of participantswho were rejoicing ardently, chanting different slogans

enthusiastically. The procession stopped at many places forpresenting call towards righteousness. Everybody listenedquietly. After the Bayn (speech) finished, a person approachedthe Nigrn and said: During the Bayn, I saw with my eyesthat Nr was being showered on everyone including the childMuballigh (preacher). Sorry! I am not a Muslim; please makeme embrace Islam right now. The participants chanted slogansmore enthusiastically. A devotee of the Holy Prophet stated: We attended (probablythe biggest) Ijtim-e-Mld held by Dawat-e-Islami at Kakriground, Bb-ul-Madna, Karachi. During conversation, anIslamic brother said, The Ijtim-e-Mld of Dawat-e-Islami

The Ijtim is still the same, how can theProphets ikr change, our hearts and mentality have changed!Even today, if we listen to Naat whilst engulfing ourselves inthe love of the Prophet

    instead of criticising,

we will gain many blessings. The first Islamicbrothers baseless objection could make a participant lose hisinterest in the Ijtim and go home but the second Islamic

brothers reply was very appropriate. Anyway, plucking up thecourage, I sat in between the devotees of the Holy Prophet andbegan to listen to Naats fondly.

The breaking of dawn approached and all the Islamic brothersstood up to welcome the dawn of blessings. The participants

were in a state of ecstasy. The calls Marab (welcome) couldbe heard from every direction. alt and Salm were beingrecited upon the Prophet . There were tears inthe eyes of the devotees of the Prophet. People were weepingeverywhere in the Ijtim. I was also in an ecstatic state. Withmy sinful eyes, I saw droplets falling on the Ijtim. It was as if

the Ijtim was being showered with mercy. I closed my eyesand began to recite alt and Salm. Suddenly, the eyes of myheart opened and, truly speaking, I saw the Beloved whoseMld we were celebrating; I beheld the Most Beloved Prophet

. , my heart was blessed withspiritual tranquillity. Really, the Islamic brother was right

when he said that the Ijtim-e-Mld held by Dawat-e-Islamiis always touching but these are our hearts that have changed. If we remain attentive, then even today, one can behold theBeloved and Blessed Prophet .

12 Madan pearls about celebrating Mld

    1. Decorate your homes, Masjid, shops and vehicles withbuntings for rejoicing the birth of the Prophet of Rama, the Intercessor of Umma . Illuminateyour home with at least 12 bulbs. Arrange an Ijtim-e-

    ikr-o-Naat on the 12th

night, and at the time of dawn, welcome the dawn of blessings with tearful eyes, raisingyour flags in hands invoking alt and Salm. If possible, observe fast on the 12th of Rab-un-Nr because our HolyProphet would celebrate his birthday byobserving fast on every Monday.

Sayyidun Qatda said that the Holy Prophet was asked as to why he fasted on every

Monday. The Holy Prophet replied, Iwas born on this day and the revelation descended uponme on the same day. (a Muslim, pp. 591, ad 198)

The commentator of a Bukhr, Sayyidun ImmQasaln has said, One of the proven boon ofcelebrating Mld of the Holy Prophet isthat peace and tranquillity prevails throughout the yearand every wish is fulfilled sooner. May Allahs mercy be

upon the one who solemnizes the nights of the Mldmonth like Eid. (Al-Mawib-ul-Ladunniya, Vol. 1, pp. 148)

    2. Nowadays, models of the Holy Kaba and dolls doingawf are displayed at some places. This is a sin. In thepre-Islamic era of ignorance, there were 360 idols in theHoly Kaba. The Holy Prophet removedall the idols from Kaba after conquering Makka. Therefore, even models containing idols (dolls) shouldnot be displayed. Plastic flowers can be placed instead.(It is permissible to display such a portrait in home,Masjid etc. in which the face of the people doing awf-e-Kaba is not clearly visible. However, it is impermissibleto display such a portrait in which the faces are clearlyvisible when looked at whilst standing with portrait beingplaced on the ground).

    3. It is not permissible to erect decorated gates comprising ofthe pictures/statues of peacocks etc. Read the following twoAd in the condemnation of pictures of living beings:

    i.

The angels (of mercy) do not enter the home in whichthere is a picture or a dog. (a Bukhr, Vol. 2, pp. 409,ad 3322)

ii. Whoever paints the picture (of a living being) will betormented by Allah as long as he does not putsoul in that picture, and he will never be able to put

soul into that. (a Bukhr, Vol. 2, pp. 51, ad 42)

    4. Some people play music in the name of celebrating theMld of the Holy Prophet . By Shara, it

is a sin to do so. Following are two Ad of the Prophet in this regard:

    i. The Holy Prophet said, I have beenordered to break the drum and the flute. (Firdaus-ul-Akhbr, Vol. 1, pp. 483, ad 1612)

ii. Sayyidun ak has reported: Musicspoils the heart and displeases Allah . (Tafsrt-e-Amadiyya, pp. 603)

    5. You can play Naat cassettes but take care at the time ofAn and al. Further, make sure that the sound ofNaat does not disturb the sick or those who are asleep ordoing worship. (Dont play cassettes of Naats in the voiceof woman).

    6. It is not permissible to decorate the roads or streets etc. orhoist the flags in such a way that causes any kind of worry

or distress to passersby or to those who are driving.

    7. Women coming out of their homes without observingParda (veil) to watch illuminations are committing ashameless and arm act. Further, doing so even whilstobserving Parda and the consequent intermingling of

men and women is also extremely shocking. Moreover, itis also not permissible to use electricity illegally. Therefore, contact the electricity department and use electricity legallyby paying its bill.

    8. In the Mld procession, try to remain in the state of Wuas long as possible. Offer al with Jamat. The devoteesof the Prophet are not supposed to miss Jamat.

    9. Avoid bringing horse-carts and camel-carts etc. in theprocession as their urine or dung may render the clothes

of devotees impure.10. During the procession, distribute as many booklets,

pamphlets and VCDs of Sunna-inspiring speeches releasedby Maktaba-tul-Madna, as you can. Further, for servingfruits/eats etc. give in the hands of the people instead ofthrowing these. Fruits and other things are disrespected ifthese are dropped on the ground and crushed under feet.

    11. Chanting inflammatory slogans can result in someunpleasant incident and can sabotage the prestigiousMld procession. Your own safety lies in remaining calmand peaceful.

    5. Display 12 flags or at least one flag in your Masjid, home, shop, workplace etc. since moon sighting for the wholemonth. Buy some flags and display them on buses, wagons, trucks, trolleys, taxis, rickshaws, horse carriages etc. Hoist

flags on your cycle, scooter and car. , thewhole city will blossom with smiling waving green flags.Usually big pictures of living beings or nasty couplets areprinted on the back of big trucks.

It is my wish that the slogan I love Dawat-e-Islami beprinted in bold lettering at the back side of trucks, buses, wagons, rickshaws, taxis and cars etc. Make efforts in thisregard by meeting and persuading the transporters andbus/truck owners and win my hearty supplications.

    Caution

If the flag bears lettering or image of Nalayn (image of the

Blessed Shoe-sole of the Holy Prophet ), makesure that the flag neither tears nor falls on the ground. Further,as soon as the month of Rab-un-Nr ends, remove the flagsimmediately. If there is risk of disrespect, use simple greenflags i.e. without that sacred image/lettering.

(Sag-e-Madna displays only simple green flags at his homenamed Bat-ul-Fan [the dying home]).

    7. Every Islamic brother should distribute as many bookletsor different pamphlets published by Maktaba-tul-Madnaas possible or at least amounting to 12 PKR among theparticipants of Mld procession; Islamic sisters shouldalso get the booklets distributed.

Similarly make your contribution to call towardsrighteousness by keeping booklets at your shops etc. forfree distribution throughout the year. Also make efforts forsuch distribution on occasions of weddings, funerals etc.and for conveying awb to the deceased. Also persuadeothers to do the same.

or servant of your Masjid; rather make intention tocontinue this good service on monthly basis.

It is better to donate the money on Friday because thereward of every good deed increases by 70 times on Friday.

! The cassettes of Baynt (Sunna-inspiring

speeches) released by Maktaba-tul-Madna have played avital role in reforming lives of several people. Even someof you may also have joined Dawat-e-Islami by virtue oflistening to some Bayn cassette. Distributing thesecassettes and VCDs to people is a great service to Islamand is a means of earning enormous reward. Therefore, if

possible, sell out 12 cassettes or VCDs of Sunna-inspiringspeeches every week or at least every month. Well-off Islamicbrothers may do this service for free. By virtue of festivityof Mld, distribute as many Bayn cassettes and VCDs asyou can and thus take part in propagation of Sunna.

On the occasion of weddings, gift a booklet or a Bayncassette/VCD along with the wedding card. Discard thetradition of Eid cards and instil the tradition of distributionof booklets etc. in its place so that the money being spentcan also help propagation of Sunna. People send meexpensive Eid cards, which causes my heart melancholic

instead of happy. Would that people spend their hard-earned money on the promotion of religion instead of Eidcards! Further, the glittering powder on these cards alsocauses severe nuisance.

    Intentions about celebrating Mld

The first ad cited in a Bukhr is: meaning Actions are valued according to the intentions. (aBukhr, Vol. 1, pp. 5)

Remember! Whenever you perform any righteous deed, youmust have the intention of gaining reward for it from Allah, otherwise, you will not gain any reward. Likewise, it is

necessary to have the intention of gaining reward whilecelebrating Mld. When making the intention of gainingreward, the act must be in conformity with Shara and mustbe performed with sincerity. If someone celebrated Mld forshowing off, using electricity illegally, forcing people to donatemoney, hurting other Muslims without Shar exemption, violating public rights, playing Naats etc. on the loudspeakerdespite knowing that it will cause distress to the ill, suckling

Hence eighteen intentions are being presented butthese are not all; a scholar of intentions can make even moreintentions for increasing awb. So make these intentions asper your condition:

    18 Intentions for celebrating Mld
