Pushing forward with Research & Innovation - the role of the EU Monday, October 11: 09:20 – 10:00
Daniel Maraver de Lemus Project Manager Horizon Europe energy Brussels, Belgium
Daniel has more than 12 years of progressive experience bringing
innovations to market.
Before joining the EU institutions, he built extensive expertise in the
renewable energy field thanks to his role as a researcher, project manager,
lecturer and technical advisor to industry and public authorities. During that
time, he received a doctoral degree from the University of Zaragoza in
Mechanical Engineering, thanks to a thesis focused on ORC power systems
and a few highly cited publications in the field.
Since 2016, he is a project manager at the European Climate, Infrastructure
and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) of the European Commission
and is involved in the implementation of low carbon energy technologies
under the framework of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programmes for
research and innovation.
Above all, he is a communicator.

Paola Bombarda Assistant Professor of “Energy and Environmental Systems” at the School of Industrial and Information Engineering Politecnico di Milano Milan, Italy
Paola Bombarda holds a PhD in Energetics and MSc Degree in Mechanical
Engineering, both from Politecnico di Milano. She has a deep knowledge in
thermodynamic analysis of energy systems for power generation,
cogeneration, trigeneration and plant performance optimization, with specific
interest in geothermal energy. She has gained wide experience in modeling,
simulation, thermodynamic analysis and optimization of geothermal power
plants (dry steam and flash, binary, hybrid plants) for which she also tackled
techno-economic analysis and electric energy cost estimation. Particular
expertise is acquired for ORC plants. Research activity is devoted also to
the study and analysis of complex energy systems including geothermal heat
pumps.
She serves as coordinator of the “Energy Conversion Systems” Subprogram
in the frame of the European Energy Research Alliance “Joint Program for
Geothermal Energy” since 2016 and participates to the activities of the
European Technology and Innovation Platform on Deep Geothermal since its
establishment

Michael works in power system optimization since more than 30 years.
All the time with main prospective to use Siemens Steam Turbine
Technology, adopt this technology for different application and improve
them.
Growing up in the traditional steam turbine business for large nuclear, coal
and gas fired power plant. The last 10-15 years with focus on new
applications like Double Reheat, Concentrated Solar Power and use of waste
heat and geothermal energy.
Jörg Starflinger Professor at and Head of the Institute of Nuclear Technology and Energy University of Stuttgart Stuttgart, Germany
Joerg Starflinger got his Diplom and Dr.-Ing. from Ruhr University Bochum.
In 1998, he joined Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as Post-Doc in the field
of hydrogen safety. He was coordinator of an EU FP6 Project on Supercritical
Water Cooled reactors and since then interested in supercritical fluid
applications. In 2010, he joined University of Stuttgart as Professor. He
initiated to build the SCARLETT test loop, which allows research with
supercritical CO2 as working fluid near the critical point. He and his doctorate
students are involved in several national and European projects on R&D of
supercritical CO2 power cycles.

Christoph Wieland Group Leader at Chair of Energy Systems at TUM Managing Director at Munich School of Engineering Munich, Germany
Christoph is active in ORC research since 2011. His focus is on geothermal
energy systems and waste heat utilization. Moreover, he focuses on the
dynamics of power plants, where he investigates large-scale coal-fired power
plants as well as small-scale ORCs for various applications. The heat transfer
of sub- and supercritical fluids is also part of his research focus.
After studying “Energy Technology and Process Engineering” in Munich and
Athens, he received his doctoral degree from TUM on “Simulation of Fine
Dust Evolution in Coal Combustion”. Since 2011 he is group leader for
“Thermodynamic Cycles and Heat Transfer” at the Chair of Energy Systems.
Since 2017 he serves also as Managing Director of the Munich School of
Engineering, an integrative research center at TUM, which fosters
interdisciplinary energy research at TUM.
Waste Heat Recovery on Ships Wednesday, October 13: 13:00 – 13:30
Martin von Sydow Naval Architect Wallenius Marine AB Stockholm, Sweden
Martin von Sydow has since graduation in Naval Architecture from CTH
(Chalmers Technical University, Gothenburg, Sweden) been mainly involved
in the design and construction of newbuilding vessels and conversions. This
has included the design of reefer vessels, LNG tankers and, since 2008
PCTC:s (Pure Car Truck Carriers) at Wallenius Marine. The focus has
increased rapidly in energy savings in the recent years with Wallenius Marines
target of the design of zero emission vessels in the future.

Dan Batscha is a senior thermodynamic engineer in ORMAT responsible for
all thermodynamic design aspects. Dan Batscha joined Ormat in 1988 after
working for fossil power plant design and has since risen in Ormat to be the
authority in power plant design. Danny has vast experience in developing
power cycle solutions for the geothermal and waste heat applications and
design of related equipment such as turbines, shell & tube and air cooled
heat exchangers. Following his view of improvement & development, Danny
is fully engaged with field tests of equipment and performance analysis of
power plants.
Danny holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, has 14 patents to his name
and has written scientific papers on the efficient use of geothermal energy.
