LETTER IN SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE OF OAXACA (sign this letter – web link below)

As fellow media makers and artists, we are writing to honor the memory of independent journalist, filmmaker, and respected activist Brad Will, who was brutally murdered while filming the grassroots popular movement in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Along with Brad, six other people were killed this past week by officials of the illegitimate government of Ulises Ruiz and the federal forces that are now occupying Oaxaca. Among them were: Emilio Alonso Fabián (professor), José Alberto López Bernal (nurse), Fidel Sánchez García (construction worker) and Esteban Zurita López.

We are extremely alarmed to see that rather than cracking down on the violent paramilitaries who have been launching regular attacks on the people of Oaxaca, President Vicente Fox is using these murders as a pretext for escalating violence against the popular grassroots organization of the people of Oaxaca.

In solidarity with the people of Oaxaca, we add our voices to these demands:

1. Ulises Ruiz out of Oaxaca! 2. Immediate withdrawal of the occupying federal forces from Oaxaca! 3. Immediate and unconditional freedom for all detainees! 4. Justice for all murdered compañeros and punishment of guilty parties on all

levels!

We make these demands in support of the Oaxacan people's efforts to establish a popular government that recognizes local traditions and values.

Brad was a musician too; and after his death, Brad is still alive, still singing, still urging us, with the words and songs and especially the compassionate, uncompromising actions of his life, to fight, for all we're worth - as he did - to defeat those ugly powers that threaten truth, life and justice. After Brad's death, much has not changed. Justice for the people of Oaxaca is still threatened, first by the corrupt state dictatorship of Ulises Ruiz, and now also by Vicente Fox's violent federal police assault that Brad's death may have helped to precipitate but certainly cannot justify. Life on earth is still threatened by corporations that recognize no social or environmental limits to their hunger for profit, and by the governments who serve them; some of them, like Coca-Cola and those behind "Plan Puebla Panama," stand to benefit from repression of the popular struggle in Oaxaca. Truth is still threatened by corporate-controlled media guilty every day of misrepresenting, covering up and playing down the authentic stories and "voices from below" that Indymedia journalists like Brad have fought to free from silencing and broadcast into public awareness. Brad will be remembered by many he has left behind. He will live on with us in our struggles to come. We will continue singing and fighting for truth, justice, liberation and the earth with Brad Will, and with the many Oaxacans -- who are not nameless, but are too often forgotten by those of us living in "the North" -- who have been killed during the course of this beautiful, awful struggle.

Maybe if we did do our work and park oursevles "full-time" in the public in mass solidarity against the killing, maybe this fallen journalist, and the others who were felled that day would still be among the living. We need to stop the "part-time" protests, Now! Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Afghanistan, now Mexico. All we do is complain on the internet from the safety of our homes, while people are dying brutally.
