Lesson-1 Ali and the Innkeeper
It was a cold winter’s day. As always, Ali was dreaming of a hot meal. A kind man offered him a loaf of bread. Now Ali thought to himself,
“If only I could have a bowl of soup! Then I would have a full meal.”
Ali went to the nearest inn. The innkeeper was rude.
He shooed him away calling him a beggar. Ali’s stomach growled with hunger. Then
he thought of an idea, “I will hold this loaf over the steam maybe the flavour of this delicious soup will soak into the bread!”
The innkeeper howled in anger, “You soup stealer!” Ali said, “Sir, I am no thief. I was only trying to capture the
flavour from the steam.”
The cunning innkeeper suddenly had an idea. He told Ali,
“You need to pay for the smell of my soup.” But when Ali told him that he had no money to pay, the angered innkeeper dragged him to the
court. Nasreddin Hodja was a judge. He was a smart man. He listened patiently to the
innkeeper’s complaint and said, “Are you demanding payment for the smell of the soup?” Innkeeper replied, “Yes!” Hodja was well known for his judgement. He took out a bag of coins and gave it a good shake. Everyone heard the clinking of the coins.
He told the innkeeper that the sound of the coins was the payment for the smell of the
soup and dismissed the court.

Class-3 S.S.T Worksheet 2
The Earth, Our Home
The Earth
We live on planet Earth, which is also known as a Blue planet
because three-fourth of the Earth is covered by water and
one-fourth is covered by land.
Shape of the Earth
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese sailor. He and his crew
started their journey from Spain. They kept sailing in one
direction. After nearly three years, they reached the same
place from where they had started. This proved that the Earth
is round like a ball.
Atmosphere
Earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere. It has
the right temperature needed by all the living things to live. Air is
a mixture of many gases like oxygen, nitrogen etc. It contains
21% oxygen, 78% Nitrogen and 1% other gases.
Globe
A globe is a model of the Earth.
It is very useful as we can study the different places on the Earth.
A huge globe will be difficult to carry. This problem can be solved if we
use maps.
Maps A map is a drawing of the Earth or a part of it.
It is very useful as we can carry it everywhere.
A book of maps is called an atlas.
Directions on a Map There are four directions on a map-
1) North
2) East
3) South
4) West
What is a compass?
A compass looks like a watch. It has a needle pointing towards the North. Once you know
where North is, you can find the other directions.

Class-3 Science Worksheet-3
Animals and Plants
Though both animals and plants are living things, they still are different
from each other in many ways.
Animals move in search of food and shelter.
Plants on the other hand are fixed to the ground. They can only move their parts.
Animals cannot make their own food. They get their food from plants, animals or both.
Plants however, green plants make their own food with the help of water, air and sunlight. Only
non-green plants like moulds and mushrooms get their food from dead and rotting matter.
Animals like horses, tigers breathe through their lungs. Fish have gills which help them to
breathe in water. Insects like ants, have air holes on their body which help them to breathe.
Plants breathe through tiny pores on their leaves.
Animals have sense organs — skin, eyes, nose, ears and tongue. These organs help them
to know about the world around them.
Plants however, do not have sense organs.
Animals like snakes and birds lay eggs. Babies hatch from these eggs. Some animals like
cats and cows give birth to their young ones.
Plants produce seeds. These seeds give rise to new plants.
In some cases, new plants can grow from a part of the plant
like stem, roots or leaves. Animals and plants are different from each other, still they depend on each other to live. If there are just
enough plants, just enough plant-eating animals, and just enough flesh-eating animals in the world, there
is a balance in nature. When there are too few animals of a kind, such as the tiger, this balance gets
disturbed. When we cut down too many trees without planting new ones, then also this balance gets
disturbed. So we should protect animals like the tiger and also grow more trees.

1) Based on the topics discussed, write the number names:
2) Write the numbers:
a) Eight thousand four hundred fifty-six : _______________
b) Nine thousand one hundred twenty-one : _______________
c) Seven thousand ninety : _______________
PLACE VALUE
The place of each digit in a number depends upon its place in the number.
a) 2156 –Two thousand one hundred fifty six
b) 9460- _______________________________
c) 5000- _______________________________
d) 1109-_______________________________
e) 3684-________________________________
FACE VALUE
The face value of a digit is the digit itself. It does not matter where the digit is
placed in the number.
So, in the number 2394,
The face value of 2 is 2.
The face value of 3 is 3.
The face value of 9 is 9.
The face value of 4 is 4.
CHECKPOINT:
The place value of each digit can be represented as:
3) Write the numbers in expanded form:
a) 7098- _______________________________________________
b) 8214- _______________________________________________
c) 9678- _______________________________________________
d) 9999- _______________________________________________
Write the place value of each digit
for:
4) Write the numbers in short form:
a) 4000 + 500 + 10 + 3 = ___________
b) 8000 + 80 + 9 = ___________
c) 2000 + 400 + 50 + 7 = ___________
5) Compare each pair of numbers. Put >, < or = :
a) 7830 7730 c) 3580 3580
b) 9530 9035 d) 4144 4144
COMPARING NUMBERS
The 4-digit number is always greater than a 3-digit or 2-digit number.
When both the numbers are 4-digit numbers, compare the thousands
place.
So, 3256 > 1956
If the digits in the thousands place are the same, compare the digits in the
hundreds place.
So, 3256 < 3956

PARTS OF A COMPUTER: HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
HARDWARE: As discussed earlier, hardware refers to the physical parts of the
computer that we can touch or feel. We shall further study about hardware in this
worksheet.
The hardware is classified in three parts:
a) Input Devices
b) Processing Devices
c) Output Devices
Name Function
Picture
Keyboard
The keyboard is used for entering data into
the computer system. It can type words,
numbers and symbols.
Mouse
The mouse is a pointing device. You can
give input to the computer with the help of
the mouse.
Joystick
A joystick makes computer games a lot
more fun. When it is moved, it passes
information to the computer.
Microphone
A microphone is the mike that can be
attached to a computer. It allows you to
input sounds like speech and songs into the
computer. You can record your voice with
the help of a microphone.
Web
Camera
A web camera is used to take live photos
and videos. You can save them in the
computer.
a) Input Devices: The devices that help us to put data into the computer are called
input devices. They help in giving instructions to the computer.
b) Processing Device: All the inputs are stored, sorted, arranged and changed by a
computer. The device that helps a computer do so is called the processing device. The
processing device in a computer is known as Central Processing Unit (CPU). It is also
known as the brain of a computer.
CPU is made up of three main parts:
i) MU (Memory Unit): We can store data and information which are to be
processed in this unit and are then passed on to ALU or CU.
ii) CU (Control Unit): The control unit works like a traffic policeman. It
controls and manages the working of all the parts of a computer.
iii) ALU (Arithmetic and Logical Unit): It performs all the arithmetic
calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and many
more logical operations.
c) Output Devices: The parts of a computer that help us to show the results of
processing are called output devices.
Name Function Picture
Monitor
A monitor looks like a TV screen.
It shows whatever you type on the keyboard
or draw with the mouse.
Scanner
A Scanner copies pictures and pages, and
turns them into images that can be saved on
a computer.
Printer
A printer helps us to give the output of our
graphics or text, usually on paper.
Speakers
Speakers are used to listen to the music and
sound that comes from the computer.
Exercises:
A. Fill in the blanks using the help box:
