ENGINE

The five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged engine produces 300 hp at 5500 rpm andoffers 295 lbs./ft. of torque at 1950–5250 rpm. Using the manual transmission, thisis enough to take you from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds in the Volvo S60 R, or 5.9seconds in the Volvo V70 R. Continuously variable intake and exhaust valve timing(Dual CVVT) contribute to exhilarating performance throughout the entire range ofengine speeds, without compromising on exhaust emission controls. Dual chargeair coolers, dual fuel pumps, a two-section fuel tank and a racing-type oil pan roundoff a highly potent powerplant designed to handle the demands of serious driving.The engine is also highly refined – its stunning performance and willing surge ofpower provide a thrill in any driving situation.

TRANSMISSION

Brembo aluminum four-cylinder brake calipers grip the 330 mm ventilated discs toprovide high-performance braking in a wide range of driving conditions. Light alloycalipers aid heat dissipation to help maintain performance even after repeatedbraking. This, together with lightweight aluminum wheels, results in low unsprungweight – enhancing the car’s crisp and precise driving manners. AWD WITH INSTANT TRACTION™

Power is continuously distributed between the front and rear wheels by Volvo’snew pre-charged, electronically controlled, all-wheel drive system – AWD withInstant Traction™. The difference is noticeable the moment you take off – constanthydraulic pressure ensures that power is promptly directed to the wheels withthe best traction. Wheel spin is minimized to provide immediate acceleration andreassuring stability in slippery conditions.

During normal driving on straight and dry roads, the front wheels receive upto 95% of the power for optimum stability and fuel economy. As the situationdictates, up to 70% of the power is instantly distributed to the rear wheels ifnecessary, to provide maximum stability and traction. Behind the handling characteristics of a Volvo R model, the Four-C

chassis system plays an integral role. This technology is designed to

utilize the car’s advanced chassis and AWD system to their greatest

potential. Whatever the road or the weather may have in store, an R

model makes every drive a pleasure. At the touch of a button the car’s

character will instantly change from taut, race-inspired handling to all-

day comfort – and back again. But regardless of the chassis mode you

choose, Four-C will continually adapt to your driving situation.R-HANDLING

BRAKING

The moment you touch the brake pedal, power to therear wheels is reduced and the shock absorbers on allfour wheels are adjusted to prepare for optimal brakingperformance, minimum pitch, and firm road-holding tohelp bring you quickly and safely to a stop.

ACCELERATION

Instantly, more power is transferred to the rear wheelsand the rear shock absorbers stiffen to ensure optimaltake-off performance. This means 0 to 100 km/h within5.7 seconds for the Volvo S60 R, and 5.9 seconds forthe Volvo V70 R.

ENTERING A CURVE

As the car enters a curve, the Active PerformanceChassis responds by increasing the shock absorbers’stiffness on both sets of wheels to enhance bodycontrol. In order to keep your pace, the shock absorbersreconfigure to create a slight degree of oversteer.At the same time, more power is transferred to the rearwheels. As the car moves further into the curve, thestiffness of the front wheel shock absorbers is reduced.This helps compensate for any tendency to understeerand assists the driver in maintaining a balanced coursethroughout the curve.

COMFORT

When the road is slippery or uneven, whendriving in town, or when you just want a relaxedride. The Comfort chassis mode insulatesthe car’s occupants from bumps in the road.The system prioritizes flexible shock absorptionfor smooth and gentle body movement andexceptional ride comfort.

SPORT

For a firm but supple sports car feel. The systemprioritizes somewhat stiffer shock absorption andreacts faster than in Comfort mode. This results inreduced body movement and precise road behavior,combined with good riding comfort.

ADVANCED

The uncompromising chassis mode for maximumperformance, control, and traction on smooth roads.The chassis no longer irons out bumps, but conveysall road surface information directly to the driver.The system stiffens the shock absorbers to ensuremaximum contact between tire and road. Providingmaximum road-holding, this setting is ideal forhighway driving, or perhaps even on a track, forsituations when road grip has the highest priority.And when you’ve had your fun, comfort is only aclick away.

MID-CURVE

At the apex of a curve, when the lateral forces are attheir greatest and you want the car to pull you out ofthe bend, power is fed to all four wheels – accordingto their level of traction – while the chassis minimizesroll and compensates for any tendencies to under orover-steer.

EXITING A CURVE

When you drive out of the curve, the system increasesboth shock absorber stiffness and power to the frontwheels – increasing stability.

R-SCIENCE

As you build up momentum, a number of natural forces take effect. The Four-C system analyzes body movement, speed, wheel movement, steering wheel position and otherparameters 500 times per second. Simultaneously, it adjusts each shock absorber for optimal handling and comfort. At the heart of the system is Volvo’s semi-active suspensionwith continuously controlled Monroe-Öhlins shock absorbers and the three dynamic chassis modes: Comfort, Sport and Advanced. The shock absorbers, AWD system, DSTCsystem, engine, brakes and steering all synthesize in an electronically controlled system – in response to your style of driving.

DSTC (DYNAMIC STABILITY AND TRACTION

CONTROL)

DSTC enhances driving stability on winding roadsand in slippery situations. By braking one or moreof the wheels and temporarily reducing the engine’spower, the system instantly helps to correct anytendency to skid – smoothly and efficiently.

WHIPS (WHIPLASH PROTECTION SYSTEM)

Whiplash is one of the most common traffic injuries,often resulting from low-speed rear impacts. WHIPShelps reduce the risk of long-term whiplash injuries.Integrated into the front seat backrests, WHIPSsupports the spine and neck in a controlled manner,and is triggered by impacts of sufficient force frombehind.

BI-XENON

As darkness falls, you will appreciate the powerfuland effective low and high beams. Bi-Xenon head-lights offer you exceptionally broad, long, andpleasant beam of light in all conditions. Low beamheight is automatically adjusted to provide the bestpossible light pattern even when the car is heavilyloaded. Integrated front and rear side-marker lightsmake it easier for other road-users approachingfrom the side to see your car.

The chassis is a rigid structure that’s designed to resist the torsion

caused by an active drive down a winding road. Then there’s DSTC

and the other chassis technologies – all configured to help keep the

car on track. In the event of an accident, you and your passengers will

have the benefit of Volvo’s world-renowned protection. The safety cage

is designed to provide a protective barrier around the occupants, while

deformation zones and numerous interactive safety systems react to

the impact of a collision.R-SAFETY

Not surprisingly, the design of the R model is an integral part of its

performance. For instance: a deeper front spoiler provides 25% more

downward thrust, the air duct is enlarged to cool the 300 hp engine,

and bi-xenon headlights improve night vision. Furthermore, R-design

aluminum wheels help cool the brakes and maintain crisp handling, and

double sport tailpipes in stainless steel are an effective finish for the

free-flow parallel exhaust system. And on the Volvo S60 R, there’s a

subtle rear spoiler to reduce lift by 20%. No fuss, just efficient design

Depending on your choice of upholstery, the interior door panels are upholstered innatural hide or soft leather. The hood above the instrument panel is trimmed in blackleather with blue stitching. R-design seating boasts deep-sculpted and supportive sides; leather

If the vehicle is to be driven in cold, snowy, or icy weather conditions,Volvo recommends the use of a suitable winter tire and wheel combination whichwill offer better traction under those circumstances.
